Wanderers next for Wolves

reebok-stadium2Wolves visit the Reebok Stadium for an 8pm kick off on Wednesday night. More fan friendly football as we look forward to getting home after midnight. While we are in the mood for moaning about kick off times do you know that the Blackpool game on Feb 26 is the only 3:00 Saturday home game between the end of November and April 9th! Rant over.

Tuesday night produced the ideal result in the Albion v Wigan game of a draw but it still means Wolves are in danger of falling adrift of some of their rivals by the time the next three games are over. With Man Ud on Saturday and Arsenal the week after then the Bolton game becomes a game Wolves could do without losing. But the Lancashire team are having a good season and have only lost at home to Chelsea and Liverpool. But 2011 has not been so good for them. They have won only one of their last 8 league games and have not scored in the last 3. They have had a fairly positive January transfer window having held on to Cahill and Elmander and added Sturridge on loan from Chelsea. So they will be expecting a win on Wednesday.

It is pretty unclear what the Wolves team will be. The recent defensive line up of Hennessey, Zubar, Stearman, Berra and Elokobi have only had 6 games together this season. They have kept 3 clean sheets and conceded only 5 goals. So there is a good argument for keeping them together. But with Foley and Craddock returning from injury there is ready competition for places.

Hunt will be missing from midfield and it will be Hamill or more likely Edwards that will take his place. Henry, Milijas and Jarvis are other likely starters so we wait to see whether O’Hara will be given a start. He has played only two behind closed door friendlies all season but Wolves are not in a position to wait long for their main January addition to make an impact.

Doyle was not considered for the weekend cup game through illness so we wait to see if he is ready to return. If he is then he might partner Ebanks Blake who is now fit again or Fletcher who needs a big game soon to justify his big money signing in the summer. Wolves may match Bolton’s usual formation of 4-4-2 by playing two of these strikers or may opt for the 4-2-3-1 we saw in the second hal against Stoke. What has been clear is that only Doyle of the strikers can play the lone striker role so I can’t see one up front unless it is him. So the choice for McCarthy is probably SEB or Fletcher to play alongside or instead of Doyle in a 4-4-2. or to play O’Hara and opt for one up front.

Wolves go into the game 5 points off 16th so a point at least is needed with the tough two games to follow. Three straight defeats could be terminal in Wolves fight for survival. So its another cup final on Wednesday, but there will be plenty of those between now and May.
