Try Your Hardest, Unless You Are Everton

So all Evertonians knew that this recent run of form was not going to last for long, and it is not extremely surprising that against Reading the everything came crashing down. Every Everton game has gone one of three ways this season, either we win a victory, we try hard yet are unfortunate to end up with a draw or loss, or the squad shows no effort and is rewarded with a resounding loss. Tuesday’s game was certainly in the final category. After the first 10 minutes or so of this game, it was pretty obvious that Everton had not come to play today,

1. After the game a lot was made of some of Moyes choices for the starting lineup, specifically that Jermaine Beckford was not in the lineup in a 4-4-2 formation similar to the Sunderland game on Saturday. Recent reports have suggested that Beckford was actually late arriving to the stadium for whatever reason, and actually didn’t arrive until the match had already started. That said, It is difficult to understand why Moyes decided to bring on Anichebe for Seamus Coleman at the half. As little as Anichebe provides up top for the Toffees, he provides even less for the team in the midfield where his flopping theatrics have almost no chance of earning a foul, and his ball control rivals that of Billy.

2. Fellaini is done for the season with an ankle injury that was picked up against Sunderland, and his absence could very well doom us for the season. Even in the game against Reading, Fellaini’s presence in the defensive part of the field was sorely missed, and all eyes are going to turn to young Jack Rodwell to step in and fill out Fellaini’s large hair presence.

3. The problem once again was effort today. Before Tuesday, this game had all the indicators of an upset, especially after the comfortable 2-0 win against Sunderland, and the squad seemed to think they could cruise to a victory. Although we were unlucky on some of our chances, there was no real desire from the squad, especially considering how much Reading wanted to win this game. This is a game that was similar to the West Brom game in November, or the Bolton game a few weeks ago, and that is really unacceptable. Finch Farm is not going to be a very pleasant place for the rest of this week, especially with a trip to St. James Park coming up on the weekend.

That is about all I have on this game, it is pretty depressing to have to write about so much craptastic soccer on a somewhat weekly basis. Everton next travel away to take  on Newcastle on Saturday to begin a string of games against teams very close to them in the table. Until next time COYB!
