Relegation threatened Wolves went into their derby game with Blues on Sunday with the longest injury list in recent memory but still managed a deserved victory over a Birmingham team that didn’t manage a shot on target in the game. McCarthy was forced to juggle his few available players to send out a team but they responded with an excellent team performance that could have resulted in a more emphatic win were it not for Blues keeper Foster.
Long term injury victims Craddock, Henry and Guedioura were joined on the absentee list by Mouyokolo, Mancienne, Jones, Jarvis and Doyle. Edwards was rushed back from injury into midfield and Fletcher was only fit for the bench.
Hennessey
Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Elokobi
Edwards, Foley, Milijas, Hunt
Ebanks Blake, Ward
Even more telling was the Wolves bench that had Hahnemann and Fletcher plus youngsters Mujangi Bia, Doherty, Ebanks Landell, Winnall and Rooney.
Foster needed to make saves from Edwards, Hunt and Ebanks Blake in the first half as Wolves dominated and a minute before the break Wolves took a deserved lead as Ebanks Blake’s cross from the right was turned in by Hunt. And two minutes into the second half Wolves should have doubled their lead but Edwards sent his close range header wide. Then Foster again came to the visitors rescue when he tipped over a Milijas header.
Although Wolves were the better team and Hennessey did not have a shot to save there was still some nerves from the home crowd as Kevin Philips entered the fray for the final 15 minutes. And he was to get the best chance for the visitors but his header was weak and well wide. Blues only threatened on one more occasion when Milijas lost possession in midfield and a left wing cross just eluded Jerome.
Hennessey – never troubled by the visitors and collected crosses confidently when he needed to.
Zubar – excellent in the second half when Blues pushed forward, winning manydefensive headers, and showed his showing at Blackburn was a one off bad one with good distribution from defence
Stearman – good return to the team and will be delighted to have featured in Wolves first clean sheet of the season
Berra – excellent in defence and collided with the post when close to scoring second half. Typified the spirit by staying on and doing a sound job despite being clearly injured
Elokobi – making the left back position his own with some typically strong challenges
Edwards – ran himself into the ground on his return from injury before being Wolves only substitution
Foley – worked hard in the middle of the park and held his own against the combative Blues midfield
Milijas – has improved his work rate and tackling back and adds the quality of passing to the team
Hunt – got his second goal and showing signs of finding his form after his long lay off
Ebanks Blake – Wolves best player. Tested the keeper a few times, good work down the channels and did more than his fair share of tackling back. Vastly improved work rate compared to last season
Ward – has played left back, left midfield, centre midfield and now striker in recent weeks and always gives 100% and makes his contribution.
So Wolves secured 3 deserved and much needed points and two successive home wins is exactly what the doctor ordered. A third on Boxing Day would be perfect especially as it is a 6 pointer against Wigan who are one place above Wolves in the table. Just one point below the survival mark now for Wolves and so there will be plenty of confidence and hope to accompany them on the long trip to Sandwell next week for the first ever Premier League Black Country Derby.
