South Korea coach Cho Kwang-rae was a proud man after watching his side finish their Asian Cup campaign undefeated in third place.
Speaking after his team’s 3-2 win over Uzbekistan in the third-place play-off at Al Sadd Stadium, Cho said he was satisfied he had played his part in guiding the Koreans in playing an attractive and effective style.
Ji Dong scored twice and Koo Ja-cheol netted another as South Korea held on to secure their spot in the 2015 Asian Cup to be held in Australia.
“We haven’t lost a game at the Asian Cup. The penalty shootout defeat against Japan was my fault. I want to say thank you to all the players who sacrificed for the team, they never gave up with excellent fighting spirit,” Cho said.
“I believe that we could have won the tournament but when it comes to penalty shootouts, not many people can predict the result.”
“This tournament gave us a lot of opportunity to show the world the new possibilities of Korean football.”
“I believe we’ve changed the way we play. It’s a much better way so I want to keep working on this progress to better Korean football.”
Cho said his side were able to control their midfield game in their Cup campaign, but he wants the side to bookend their neat play in the middle with precise finishing and solid defence in future tournaments.
“Throughout the Asian Cup, I found the players were able to pass the ball through midfield much quicker than before so that aspect I was quite satisfied about,” he said.
“I would like to improve on what we’re doing, be faster in front of goal to make us much more effective and also strengthen the defensive organisation.”
Uzbekistan boss Vadim Abramov credited his team’s mental toughness after they recovered from three goals down to almost snatch a draw as Alexander Geynrikh’s double either side of half-time drew them closer.
The result was a vast improvement on their 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the semi-final as they achieved their best result at Asia’s premier soccer tournament.
“Their psychology, I don’t know why the players made so many mistakes but after our goal and half-time, I told players we have a chance, we have 45 minutes to use all preparation for this tournament and then players in the second half played much better and we had a chance to draw,” Abramov said.
“I think the reason was that we did not have belief in our self in the Australia game. In that game we played well but our defensive line made too many mistakes. We had more possession but it was too easy for Australia to score.”

Qatar were done in by an 89th minute goal from Japan. They were in the lead two times in the game through goals from Sebastian Soria and Fabio Cesar.
Shinji Kagawa is not going to be a popular name in Qatar for awhile. He scored the equaliser both times.
With the game apparently destined for extra-time, an enterprising Kagawa dribble drew Qatar goalkeeper Qasem Burhan from his line and when the ball broke to defender Masahiko Inoha, he rolled home the winner- preventing Qatar from entering the semi final stage - something that would have been a first for them.

A last-minute Masahiko Inoha goal gave 10-man Japan a dramatic 3-2 victory over Qatar in a thrilling Asian Cup quarter-final on Friday.
Qatar twice went ahead through Sebastian Soria and Fabio Cesar Montezine, but Shinji Kagawa equalised on both occasions before Inoha’s 90th minute strike secured victory for the three-time Asian Cup winners.
While Japan made three changes headlined by Eiji Kawashima’s return from suspension, Qatar made just the one, with Mesaad Ali Al Hamad starting in place of the suspended Mohammed Kasola.
Qatar lost left-back Ibrahim Majid in the 11th minute to a hamstring injury, but were undettered by the setback and went ahead just a minute later.
The goal came when Sebastian Soria was inexplicably allowed to turn onto his left foot in the Japanese penalty area, before squeezing his shot past Eiji Kawashima for his first goal of the tournament.
Japan fought back in the 27th minute when Borussia Dortmund’s Kagawa produced the equaliser.
A chip into the penalty area from Keisuke Honda set Shinji Okazaki free, who lofted the ball over the oncoming Qasem Burhan in the Qatar goal.
Okazaki’s chip was headed for the back of the net but with the presence of Ali Al Hamad, Kagawa was required to bundle it home from the goal-line to level proceedings.
The lively Yousef Ahmad had a chance to put Qatar in front but dragged his shot wide, while Burhan made two good saves within a minute, denying Okazaki and Makoto Hasebe.
Japan came out with an attacking mindset after the interval, and Okazaki went close to scoring but his header flashed just wide, before Nagatomo’s 20-yard strike was well saved by Burhan.
Qatar were given a boost after the hour mark following the dubious sending off of Japan’s Maya Yoshida, who received his marching orders after a questionable second yellow card when he tried to tackle Ahmad.
Qatar deepened the wound when substitute Cesar Montezine scored from the resultant free-kick after a poor piece of goalkeeping from Kawashima.
Rather than pressing on and looking for a third goal, Qatar went on the defensive and allowed Japan time and space on the ball.
And they were quickly made to pay when Kagawa pounced on a ball that spilt on the edge of the box before sending a neat finish to equalise with 20 minutes to play.
Just as it seemed the match was heading for extra time, Inoha popped up to crush Qatar’s hope of a first Asian Cup semi-final appearance, slotting the ball home into goal following Khaled Muftah’s challenge on Kagawa.
Fri 21 January, 2011Uzbekistan advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Jordan in Doha on Friday.
Both teams were aiming for their maiden semi-final berth at Asia’s premier soccer tournament and two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Ulugbek Bakayev ensured his team will face either Australia or Iraq in the last four.
Jordan pulled one back through captain Bashar Bani Yaseen, but could not find an equaliser amid a frantic finale with plenty of goalscoring opportunities.
Uzbekistan coach Vadim Abramov made five changes to the side which drew 2-2 with China on Sunday, opting for a more defensive line-up, but after an uninspiring opening, it was Uzbekistan who created the first chance.
On 22 minutes, Aleksandr Geynrikh, who scored a sensational long-range goal against China, forced an acrobatic save from Amer Shafee in the Jordan goal with another thunderous strike from distance.
Four minutes later it was Jordan’s turn to attack when Ahmed Abdelhalim launched a left-footed free-kick toward goal that almost caught out Uzbekistan goalkeeper Ignatiy Nesterov, but he was equal to the challenge and clattered into the post to make a crucial stop.
Moments later Hassan Abdel Fattah flashed a crisp volley just wide of the upright as Jordan began to enjoy the better of the play.
Uzbekistan could have taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when a great cross from Sanzhar Tursunov picked out Geynrikh in the box but the striker’s shot was well saved by Shafee.
Uzbekistan emerged a new team after the break, and took the lead immediately after the restart when a fine in-swinging free-kick from Server Djeparov found Bakayev who glanced a header past Shafee.
Two minutes later it was 2-0, when Jasur Hasanov fired an excellent cross to Bakayev and the striker’s first-time shot gave Sahfee no chance.
Jordan pulled a goal back after 58 minutes when a Shadi Abu Hashhash header forced a fine save from Nesterov, but Bashar was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Uzbekistan goalkeeper Nesterov was substituted on the hour mark, replaced by Temur Juraev, after failing to recover from his collision with the post in the first-half.
The new gloveman was forced to make a great save almost immediately when Abdelhalim lashed a fierce left foot drive toward goal, but Juraev averted the danger.
Geynrikh was forced off with what appeared to be a knee injury on 68 minutes as Jordan continued to pile on the pressure.
But with more emphasis on attack, Jordan were left exposed at the back and Uzbekistan could have made sure of the result with eight minutes to play when Tursunov found himself clean through, but the winger could only fire his shot wide.
