Giggs inspires Owen to play on

Michael Owen says he will not allow a new injury setback to make him think about retiring any time soon.

The striker hobbled off after 11 minutes during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Otelul Galati with a thigh problem, and with his contract up at the end of the season, it has been suggested that he may retire.

But the Englishman says he is still in love with the game and has taken inspiration from team-mate Ryan Giggs who is still playing for United despite being 37-years-old.

“I’m 31, so I’d still like to think I’ve got a few years left in me when you look at players like Giggsy,” Owen said in an interview broadcast on Sky Sports News.

“And while they are playing in their mid to late-thirties, that is great for us all, really.”

“But I’d like to think I’ve got a few years left in me and I still love the game. How can’t you love it when you are playing for such a top club like Manchester United?”

Giggs plays down unbeaten talk

Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs has cooled talk of an unbeaten season, cautioning that there is still plenty of football left to be played.

United sit on top of the English Premier League table, two points clear of Manchester City with two games in hand and having yet to be defeated after 20 fixtures.

But the veteran midfielder says it is far too early to be discussing the prospect of an unbeaten season, especially with a crunch clash at Tottenham right around the corner.

“It’s been a strange season where anyone can beat anyone so we realise that every game from now is going to be tough,” Giggs said.

“We’ve got to play against all our rivals, we’ve got to play against teams that will be fighting relegation and anything can happen, so we’re experienced enough to know we’ve got tough games ahead and anything can happen.”

Giggs sent United through to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, scoring from the penalty spot as the Red Devils defeated bitter rivals Liverpool 1-0.

United are on track for their 19th league title this season – one that would see them overtake Liverpool as the most successful top-flight team in English football history.

But Giggs insists his team-mates are not concerned by such records.

“I think the manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) wanted to do that when he came down from Scotland, but I think it’s more of a fans thing than a player’s or manager’s aim,” he said.

“Of course it would be great to do. But it’s more of a fan’s thing to do to boast that you’ve won more league titles than Liverpool.”

“It’s something that the fans would love to have in their locker but as a team you can’t get yourself caught up in stuff like that.”

“You’ve got to concentrate on winning the league because it’s tough enough to win the league as it is.”

“No matter because you want to win it because of winning this or that, you want to win it because you realise it’s a tough league.”

Giggs predicts strong showing from Liverpool

Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs will not be taking Liverpool lightly ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster FA Cup clash.

Liverpool have struggled in all competitions this season and are 12th on the Premier League table, just four points above the relegation zone.

But the Welsh winger believes that in a one-off cup tie, Liverpool’s form is irrelevant.

“First and foremost, form goes out the window when you play in the FA Cup,” Giggs said.

“Liverpool will probably see it as a break from the League, a break from the pressures of their league form at the moment and their chance to get their season back on track.”

“You take no notice of how teams are doing, whether it’s a derby or your biggest rivals, form goes out the window. It’s a one-off game like I say, one bad decision or bit of luck and you’re out of the Cup.”

“They’ve got world class players, Gerrard, Torres, Pepe Reina in their team – all world-class players so when you’re up against a team with players like that then you don’t take any team lightly.”

While Manchester City and Leeds United are strong rivals of the Old Trafford outfit, Giggs admits there is something special about this rivalry.

“I think it’s just the history that’s there between the two teams. The two most successful teams in England,” he said.

“When I was growing up Liverpool were winning everything. Over the last 15-20 years obviously we’ve been winning the majority of Leagues and Cups so there’s that history and rivalry. They’re half an hour away. They’re both great teams with great traditions.”

Giggs says ‘you can’t beat’ the feeling of lifting the FA Cup at Wembley and is hoping his side can reverse last year’s shock third round exit at the hands of Leeds at Old Trafford.

Giggs wary of league rivals

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs said his side are taking nothing for granted in their bid to regain the English Premier League title.

After winning the title three years in succession, Manchester United’s grip on English football loosened last season when Chelsea lifted the much-coveted trophy under Carlo Ancelotti.

But with Chelsea having won just one of their last eight matches, they are now six points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s side – who also have a game in hand.

Unbeaten this season, Giggs said while the side is confident, they will guard against complacency and keep their feet on the ground.

“You are obviously wary because of the way the league has been this year,” Giggs told SkySports.

“Anyone can beat anyone. We are thankful we remain unbeaten and confidence is high. But we realise that nothing can be taken for granted.”

“It is a tough league and we need to be at our best in every game.”

Arsenal and Manchester City are the Old Trafford outfit’s closest title challengers at present, but Giggs is hoping to kick away from the chasing pack and is expecting big things from his side in the remainder of the season.

“We hope to get better in the second half of the season,” he said.

“Our form over the last few weeks has been really good. We looked sharp against Arsenal and Blackburn, and it was the same against Sunderland.”

“Some of the play we produced, the one-touch passing and the movement, was great to be involved in.”

Giggs admits it is a big blow to lose influential midfielder Park Ji-Sung, who could miss as many as seven matches to play for the Korea Republic at the Asian Cup.

“We are disappointed Ji is going away at this time because he has been playing so well. Any of the lads would have Ji in the team every time because of his work rate and what he puts into the game,” Giggs said.

“But this is what the squad is for. We have players who aren’t getting games but will be ready to come in and do a job.”

Is Ryan Giggs Ready to Manage Wales?

By: Ivor | September 6th, 2010

275px-Giggs_PL_trophy
So Robbie Savage finally got his way. After years of petty character assassination, some of it deserved, but most of it simply out of the frustration we all feel, John Toshack has finally decided to jack it in. Now the big man can go back to his hacienda in Spain, put those giant feet up, watch ‘Sexy Beast’ and periodically appear on the telly as an expert on La Liga when Sid Lowe is busy. A fine player in his day, even if it was for the despised red Scousers for a while, he had a decent record as a Manager in Spain and is getting a bit long in tooth to have to defend himself and his team from Crazy Robbie’s jibes on the radio.

The rumour mills are all ablaze with chitchat about Ryan Giggs stepping in and taking over. The bookies are quoting odds of 11/4 according to what I read this morning. For his sake and mine–as both a Manchester United and Wales supporter–he must not say yes. At least not now. Along with Ivor Allchurch and ‘The Big Brilliant’ himself, John Charles, he is surely the greatest Welsh football player ever. If Allchurch and Charles were smart enough to not accept the manager’s job, no matter how often it was offered, Giggs ought to be, too.

I will not use the’ poisoned chalice’ excuse here. The young squad Wales have been fielding quite an array of talent next to Craig Bellamy, Joe Ledley and Wayne Hennessey. Left without much choice, El Tosh went young. Youthful saplings like Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale are already blooming and the likes of Jack Collison, Chris Gunter, Lewis Nyatanga and Adam Matthews are knocking hard at the door. Juggling a mixture of callow youth and the monomaniacal narcissism of Craig Bellamy was never going to be anything less than constant aggravation for an old-school warrior like Tosh. Managing this young squad ought to be a pleasure for a young, forward-thinking manager; yet, clearly the lads are not going to come good for at least a couple of years yet. and the Welsh F.A.. ought to be more understanding.

If Ryan Giggs were to take on this job, the odds are that such a decision would put him at odds with the Gaffer. Nobody would want that. Having seen Sir Alex Ferguson fall out with the likes of Paul McGrath, Brian Kidd, Paul Ince, Roy Keane, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Carlos Tevez, to name but a few, I can say that the only winners have been United’s opponents. Ryan Giggs has played 591 games for the greatest club in the world and a celebration of 600 looms large. Anybody who doesn’t know what Ryan Giggs has won doesn’t know a thing about football. Go to Wikipedia if need be and see that over more than twenty years as a professional the Welsh Wizard has won everything but a World Cup winner’s medal. Unless something catastrophic happens between now and June, Giggsy will surely want to see this season through and play in one last Champions Cup campaign.

So, why the fuss? What’s so urgent? Well, already, both John Toshack and Robbie Savage have said that Giggsy is the best man for the job. As this is the one and only thing these two have in common and Welsh football is a very small world, this already ratchets up the pressure on Our Ryan! Surely all the bigwigs at the Welsh F.A.. will be whispering sweet-nothings and sending adoring text-mesages nonstop to his cell. The fact is that England will be playing Wales in Cardiff in March and the Welsh F.A.., aside from its desperate desire to win, wants to hear those sounds of clicking cash registers. In a Taffy Hollywood scenario–one that I, too, would love–Wales, led by their brilliant player-manager, would defeat England and set off a celebration of it as a new Brazil that could last a year.

Back down to earth, however, as a member of a club who will be competing for the highest honours, Ryan Giggs is not superman! The stress of competing for five trophies and managing Wales would mean something had to give. In the first place, I would prefer that the job be given to the coach who deserves it the most, Brian Flynn. He knows all the youth players well and deserves a chance. A second choice, preferably as a caretaker, would be Chris Coleman. He’s not the brightest spoon in the cutlery draw, but he does have a modicum of experience and is still young enough to be able to communicate with the kids. Offering Craig Bellamy a chance to be Player-Manager is an alternative, too. Realistically, it will never happen, but beyond his obsessive-compulsive behavior and natural obstreperous personality, is a genuinely bright guy with leadership qualities. Putting him in charge might actually force him to finally conquer some demons and grow up.

At any rate, a year from now, I believe Giggs will be either coaching at United(It’s a fair bet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be taking over somewhere soon), stepping in to take over from Mike Phelan, or working as an assistant elsewhere. Managing Wales did a lot to help set Mark Hughes on a successful path to premiership management, but the expectations with this set of young players will surely be much higher for Giggs than it was for Sparky. Take your time, Giggsy!
