Ranieri expects Napoli challenge

Claudio Ranieiri is under no illusions about the threat Napoli pose to Roma ahead of their clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

Napoli are second on the Serie A table, just three points behind league leaders AC Milan and seven points ahead of Ranieri’s Roma.

But they lost their last match 2-0 at Chievo, leading former Chelsea and Juventus boss Ranieri to detect a potential weakness in Napoli when they are playing away from home.

“I’m expecting a very difficult match,” Ranieri said.

“Napoli have got to where they are in the table because they deserve being there, they are playing excellent in the league ? not as well away from home, but they know how to counterattack and use spaces that most others don’t.”

“We have a great team and they will manage (to) stop them.”

Roma lost 5-3 away to defending champions Inter Milan last time out, but Ranieri insists the reverse had little effect on the morale of his squad.

“Luckily, we don’t read too much into a result and manage to resist whatever gets thrown at us,” Ranieri said.

“We don’t win a match and think we have won the championship and when we lose a match, we pick ourselves up and move on.”

“We have the right balance and have already shown that. The team is in good shape, we are focused, we are determined and it will be a great match.”

FA Cup preview: Stoke face Cardiff challenge

Tony Pulis returns to his home country when Stoke travel to Wales to face Cardiff for an FA Cup third-round replay on Tuesday.

Promotion-chasing Cardiff City drew 1-1 at Stoke 10 days ago and manager Dave Jones is keen to claim a Premier League scalp and enjoy a FA Cup run to rival 2008, when the Bluebirds were runners-up, losing 1-0 at Wembley to Portsmouth.

Stoke’s Tuncay Sanli equalised after Michael Chopra gave Cardiff an early lead and former Wales international John Hartson is quick to talk up City’s chances, though he is expecting a difficult match.

“Stoke will be tough opponents and Cardiff will have to defend stoutly,” Hartson said.

“In the original tie I felt Stoke were the better side, but Dave Jones’ men deserve a second chance and, especially with home advantage, who would bet against a Bluebirds win?”

Several current or former Welsh internationals will play in the game, with Craig Bellamy, Jason Koumas and Darcy Blake likely to line up for the hosts while Danny Collins and Ryan Shawcross – a Welsh youth international – should feature for Stoke.

Manchester City will host Leicester at the City of Manchester Stadium after the two sides drew 2-2 at the Walkers Stadium.

The match also presents an opportunity for respective managers Roberto Mancini and Sven-Goran Eriksson to link up again, with the pair having spent time together at Sampdoria and Lazio, during their playing and coaching careers.

The first leg was an entertaining affair, although it was only Joe Hart’s blunder that allowed Leicester skipper Andy King to score the equaliser and Mancini’s side should have enough about them to see off the Championship side.

Arsenal will make the trek up north to Elland Road as they face Championship high-flyers Leeds United in the sole replay on Wednesday.

The first leg was a thrilling 1-1 draw with Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas keeping his side alive in the tournament thanks to an injury-time penalty.

Leeds impressed at the Emirates Stadium with their willingness to attack Arsenal and will be hopeful that a sell-out Elland Road crowd of nearly 40,000 can spur them on to victory.

Simon Grayson’s side have form in the competition, having shocked arch-rivals Manchester United in the third round last year, before forcing Tottenham to a replay in the fourth round and if they can repeat their recent form, losing just one of their past 15, they are in with a fighting chance.

The other replay sees Wolves host Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers at Molineux on Tuesday after a 2-2 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy will surely be tempted to rest players with his side in the middle of a relegation fight, but after an excellent performance almost produced a draw in a thrilling 4-3 loss to Manchester City on Saturday, McCarthy is most likely to make few changes to his side.

Chelsea challenge next for Wolves

WOLVES V SUNDERLAND 27 GD 27The reigning league champions come to Molineux on Wednesday to meet the Premier League’s bottom team in what logic suggests should be a banker away win but that current form indicates will be a lot closer affair. Chelsea were everyone’s tip to retain their title in the autumn as they established a lead at the top of the table and were looking more formidable than any of their title rivals but an alarming drop in form has seen them fall away from the title race and they will be desperate for three points against Wolves.

They won 9 of their first 10 Premier League games this season only losing at Man City but since the beginning of November they have won only 2 of the next ten and have fallen from top to 5th and are 9 points adrift of leaders Man Utd.  The current form tables show Chelsea having just 7 points from the last 8 games, that’s 2 less than Wolves over the same period. A positive for the Blues is the return to match fitness of Frank Lampard and they will be just about full strenghth for this game. But I always felt when they were steamrolling everyone at the start of the season that they were reliant on the brilliance of Drogba and his standards have fallen in the last couple of months, partly due to illness, and Chelsea look less formidable as a result.

Wolves have a WLWLWL record over the last six games so a win would maintain that up and down record but you have to go back to January 1983 for their last success against Chelsea and regardless of the form of their opponents this is still a massive challenge at a time when points are needed to keep up with the pack. Being 4 points off 13th means the situation is very much recoverable at the moment but this is the first of 6 very difficult games and they will do well to be as close to some of the teams above them in February. Albion’s defeat on Tuesday brings them closer to the drop zone and although Birmingham’s win at Blackpool has helped them there is still time for the tangerines, who have a big fixture backlog, to drop into trouble.

Surprise boost for Wolves this week was that Kevin Doyle returns to the squad for the Chelsea game and Karl Henry is likely to return in Saturday’s cup game at Doncaster with Craddock also set to retutn to action within a fortnight. Whether Doyle will start tonight is questionable but if he does that is likely to see Stephen Ward move from striker to left back. Barring any fatigue from the run of 4 games in a fortnight that is likely to be the only change to the line up unless McCarthy looks for the security of a 5 man midfield against the champions and that could see Edwards back in with Doyle or Ebanks Blake playing the lone striker role.

A point tonight would be very welcome, a win would be fantastic and would doubtless grab all the headlines, and probable spell trouble for Ancellotti. But any result would be a big boost for McCarthy as he tries to keep Wolves in the top flight in a fight that is likely to be still rumbling in until May.

Martinez: Wigan meeting challenge head-on

Roberto Martinez is backing his Wigan Athletic players to prove their mettle in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of a local derby at Bolton.

The Latics went down 1-0 at home to Newcastle on Sunday, missing the chance to move up to 12th position in the English Premier League table.

They have an immediate chance to hit back at the Reebok, and Martinez has been pleased with the way they have reacted this week.”There was still a feeling of disappointment after Sunday as we did not perform in the way we can after two very good performances,” the Wigan boss said.”Now we feel we cannot wait to get back on the pitch and get rid of that disappointment.”

“Mentally we are full of desire, and the reaction has been fantastic.”

“Taking away the performance against Newcastle, we have been very strong recently.”"We always face adversity in a very good way and will continue to work hard for each other.”

Bolton have lost their last two matches – at Chelsea and Liverpool – but Owen Coyle’s men are still riding high in seventh on the table.

“We know how difficult this game is going to be because Bolton have been in very good form, especially at home,” Martinez added.”They have a group of players who have been working together for a long, long time, and have had some outstanding results this season.”"You know you are going to be very tested in every department as they will fight until the last second. They are playing with a smile on their face and enjoying their football.”

The Latics will be without on-loan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi, who is unable to face his parent club, while Charles N’Zogbia serves the second match of a three-match suspension for his sending-off against Arsenal on December 29.

James McCarthy (ankle), Franco di Santo (ankle), Emmerson Boyce (hamstring) and Victor Moses (shoulder) are all out.
