West Brom knew of Suarez threat, says Jones

West Brom defender Billy Jones revealed his side discussed the danger of tackling Luis Suarez in the box before the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Liverpool opened the scoring from the spot in the first half of the English Premier League encounter through Charlie Adam after Jerome Thomas bundled over Suarez in the area.

Jones said: “It was a bit of a harsh penalty, and going 1-0 down against Liverpool, it is always going to be hard.”

“I don’t think it was a penalty. Jerome was in a good position. I think he has taken a touch and Suarez has got himself in front of him.”

“We spoke beforehand of being careful of Suarez in the penalty area because he has won penalties before for Liverpool.”

“He is good at winning penalties and we knew we had to be careful around him – and Jerome was.”

“Suarez has gone down and the linesman has given it. It was one of those things. It was harsh to concede a goal that way.”

But former Preston player Jones, 24, went on to praise the blossoming partnership between Suarez and strike partner Andy Carroll.

“They were a threat,” he said.

“There were balls which got knocked in where Carroll wasn’t favourite to win them or get anything from them.”

“But he turns those half-balls into good balls by getting it down and releasing other players.”

“He sets up Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam while Suarez is already on his bike making good runs.”

Derby loan for ´keeper Jones

Championship club Derby County have signed Australian international goalkeeper Brad Jones on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season.

Derby found themselves without a senior goalkeeper after loanees Frank Fielding and Matt Duke returned to Blackburn Rovers and Hull City respectively. Stephen Bywater began as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, but fell out of favour and is on loan at Championship rivals Cardiff City. Jones, 29, will become the second Liverpool player to join Derby on loan following the arrival of Daniel Ayala in February.”Matt (Duke) was due to play for our reserves on Tuesday, but we got a late call from Hull to say they wished to recall him,” Derby manager Nigel Clough said.”They were perfectly entitled to do that as he is their player, so we had to use our contacts pretty quickly to get someone of sufficient quality in the building.”"Brad fits the bill perfectly; he has Premier League experience, Football League experience and – importantly – big-game experience.”"We have some big games coming up between now and May, and he will be our number one in them.”"He hasn’t had much first-team football this season, so I’m pretty sure he will be looking forward to the challenge.”"He also knows Daniel Ayala well and he has also played with Shaun Barker in the past which will be good for him when working with the back four going into his first game at Cardiff.”"Liverpool have done us a big favour and I would like to thank Kenny Dalglish and the other officials at Anfield for agreeing to loan another of their players to Derby County. “Jones began his career with Middlesbrough, making 57 appearances for the senior team between 2001 and 2010. He was loaned out on six occasions during that time, before joining English Premier League club Liverpool in August 2010.Jones made his full international debut for Australia in 2007 and has won three caps for the Socceroos.

The Phil Jones conundrum

By: Jack | December 18th, 2010

Carlo likes the look of a cat named Phil Jones. The same Phil Jones who is likely out for the season.

What to do?

philjones
Soon to be joining the CFC?

Chelsea were first linked with Blackburn defender Phil Jones eight or so months ago. That speculation has heightened in recent times, with the club suffering a defensive crisis of sorts and the 18-year-old Jones becoming something of a phenom this season under former Rovers manager Sam Allardyce.

Ancelotti, last month, spoke glowingly of the versatile Jones. From the Fulham Chronicle:

“Jones can have a very good future in English football. He is one of the best defenders of his age and one of the best in England. He will have to work hard but I believe he has the ability to arrive at the same level as John Terry.”

Some praise.

Allardyce is of course now gone, shunned to the curb by a grossly impatient – and grossly ignorant – band of outsiders. Now would be an ideal time to make a move for the versatile Jones then, right?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Jone went down with a serious knee injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham. It’s suspected that Jones suffered ligament damage, something that could potentially end his season. A tremendous blow to Rovers, no doubt.

How Chelsea responds is anyone’s guess. If the club is in fact interested in pursuing Jones in January, this news may very well quell any potential move. I can understand such reasoning, with the club likely needing someone who could do a job immediately – especially if Terry and Alex continue to struggle.

There’s also the likeliness that any deal in January would come at an inflated price, despite the injury. Lest we forget, this kid is only 18 years old. Eighteen. Stifling. And then there’s the simple fact that it’s January, and prices are always higher in the mid-term window.

But, for me, that should not be a deterrent. There is more value in the idea of tying up Jones now rather than later. The kid is already attracting attention from many a top club. And for good reason. What if we wait, a bidding war ensues, and we lose out on yet another top young English talent (see Adam Johnson, among others). If we do indeed have money to spend, sign the lad up. I see no reason why we can’t afford to bring him in, and then reap the benefits in 5-6 months time.

It’ll be interesting to see how the club decides to proceed.

What would you do?

« Today’s rubbish rumour: Cech to Zenit | Home | arn00bWhat's the point of getting someone to bench him for the rest of his life? There's not enough squad rotation in Chelsea like before. Everyone has cemented his place in the squad and others have to wait for injury crises to get in on the action.

Kids see a big club knocking, they transfer, spend too much time on the bench, their level deteriorates, their contract expires and we never hear from them again.
