Bundesliga wrap: Hannover stun Bayern

Bayern Munich blew a golden chance to move six points clear on top of the Bundelsiga when they slumped to a 2-1 loss at Hannover on Sunday.

Hannover took the lead after 23 minutes when Norwegian striker Mohammed Abdellaoue slotted home a penalty after Philipp Lahm fouled Steve Cherundolo inside the box.

Things got worse for the visitors when Jerome Boateng was sent off five minutes later after an altercation with Christian Schulz.

Hannover made their numerical advantage count five minutes after the break when Christian Pander scored their second.

The hosts also found themselves down to 10 men when Cherundolo was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and an 83rd-minute goal from Bayern substitute David Alaba set up a frantic finish to the match.

But Bayern could not force an equaliser as Jupp Heynckes’ men slumped to their second defeat of the season.

Elsewhere on Sunday, a late Jefferson Farfan strike lifted Schalke to third in the standings with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

The result leaves Schalke just four points behind Bayern and one behind reigning Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund.

Bundesliga wrap: Do or die for duo

Borussia Monchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt will be fighting for their lives in the Bundesliga on Saturday, while St Pauli look doomed.

Monchengladbach have spent much of the season propping up the table.

But they beat Hannover 1-0 away last week and are now three points off safety with two matches remaining.

They host overachievers Freiburg this weekend, before a trip to Hamburg on the last day of the season.

Faced with a similar situation in the 1997/98 season, a Steffen Effenberg-inspired Gladbach won both of their last two matches to narrowly survive.

It remains to be seen if the 2011 edition can match those heroics.

Frankfurt fans also face a nerve-wracking conclusion to the season.

Third from bottom and just one point away from safety, they play host to Cologne, who are four points better off in 14th place and require just a draw to guarantee their survival.

Wolfsburg are the other team battling to avoid the drop.

They have won their last two matches – Felix Magath’s first victories since returning as coach in March – to climb out of the bottom three.

League champions as recently as 2008/09, they remain just one point clear of the relegation zone and are at home to Kaiserslautern on Saturday.

St Pauli looked destined to return to the second tier after just one season back in the top flight.

Six points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference to the teams above them, they would need big wins in both matches to have any chance of a remarkable escape.

And with Champions League contenders Bayern Munich arriving at the Millerntor on Saturday, it would appear an impossible task.

Worse still for St Pauli, Bayern will not be lacking in motivation.

They finally moved into third place – the final European Cup qualification berth – after Hannover lost last week and will fiercely defend their two-point advantage in the last two matches.

Werder Bremen are still just four points clear of the drop and will be hoping newly crowned champions Borussia Dortmund arrive nursing a hangover from their title-winning celebrations.

Stuttgart, five points above the bottom three, must take points off third-placed Hannover as they seek to guarantee their survival.

Elsewhere, Hamburg travel to second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, while sixth plays eighth when Nuremburg host Hoffenheim.

Mainz can secure Europa League qualification with a win away to Schalke, who exited the Champions League at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday.

Bundesliga wrap: Wins for Dortmund, Bayern

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund wrapped up a Champions League berth on Sunday, while Bayern Munich edged closer to one of their own.

Dortmund ensured a top-three finish is the minimum that awaits them at campaign’s end with a 3-0 win over visiting Freiburg, shortly after Bayern rode Mario Gomez’s hat-trick to a 5-1 thumping of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s heavy defeat allowed Dortmund to open up an eight-point lead at the top with four games remaining, while Bayern leapfrog Hannover into third place.

Dortmund imposed themselves on the contest early and took a deserved lead through Mario Gotze in the 23rd minute.

The Germany midfielder gleefully finished past Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann after Marcel Schmelzer played his way to the goal-line and pulled a pass back for his team-mate.

It only got more one-sided as Poland international Robert Lewandowski – who had earlier made a mess of two gilt-edged opportunities – pounced on Omer Toprak’s deflection, rounded Baumann and poked into the open net on 43 minutes.

Chances flew thick and fast in the second half as Freiburg searched for a goal, but it was Dortmund who would succeed once more as Kevin Grosskreutz made the most of a terrific squared ball by Gotze for a 3-0 result 12 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Bayern gave Leverkusen manager Jupp Heynckes a good look at the talent that will be at his disposal next season with a classy 5-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Heynckes is set to take over from caretaker boss Andries Jonker at Bayern next term, but will see out the season in charge of Leverkusen.

And while Bayern’s win came at the expense of his current side, Heynckes will be gladdened that he will soon have the services of Gomez, who extended his goal tally to a league-leading 22 with a hat-trick inside 20 first-half minutes.

The early signs were ominous for Leverkusen when midfielder Simon Rolfes deflected Franck Ribery’s cross into his own net in the seventh minute to gift Bayern a 1-0 lead.

Frontman Gomez took over from there, knocking in Thomas Muller’s cross in the 28th minute and again in the 44th minute.

The Germany international then nabbed his hat-trick goal on a counter-attack in first-half injury time, blasting a low, angled strike that was simply too good for Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler.

With four goals to their credit, Bayern had no need to press in the second half and seemed content to sit back until Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok smashed a cross into the roof of the net in the 62nd minute.

That prompted a brief flurry of activity from the hosts, who earned their fifth and final goal through Ribery after the France international played himself into the area on a one-two with Daniel van Buyten and clinically finished past Adler.

Bundesliga wrap: Dortmund held, Hannover go third

Borussia Dortmund struck a late equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Hamburg, while Schalke’s good week continued in Saturday’s Bundesliga action.

Jakub Blaszczykowski’s goal two minutes into injury time secured an all-important point for the league leaders, leaving Juergen Klopp’s side destined to win their first league title since 2001-02 despite an unconvincing run of form since the German winter break.

Dortmund appeared set for just their fourth loss of the season when Ruud van Nistelrooy put Hamburg ahead on 39 minutes from the penalty spot, after Mats Hummels had clumsily bundled over Croatian forward Mladen Petric in the area.

Mario Goetze, Dortmund’s 18-year-old prodigy, almost equalised just before half-time when his shot was cleared off the line and he went close to scoring again just after the break, when he headed over the bar.

Dortmund were beginning to impress and when Hamburg’s Aenis Ben-Hatira was sent off for a second yellow card, they finally made the most of when Blaszczykowski got on the end of Patrick Owomoyela’s pass and gave his side a priceless point.

Just five days after their shock 5-2 Champions League victory at Inter Milan on Tuesday, Schalke maintained their winning form with a 1-0 home triumph over Wolfsburg.

Jurado’s 76th minute goal decided the contest, as Wolfsburg’s winless run extended to five, with the defeat leaving the club third-bottom on the table.

Hannover climbed to third with a 2-0 home victory over Mainz, courtesy of goals to Didier Ya Konan and Sergio Pinto.

Ya Konan’s strike was his 13th for the season and his third in five matches as Mirko Slomka’s side took advantage of Bayern Munich’s slip-up at Nuremberg, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

Bayern looked on track for a fourth consecutive Bundesliga victory when Thomas Mueller converted Arjen Robben’s assist after five minutes.

But Nuremberg have been solid all season, and despite losing their last two, have a place in the top six for a reason, as highlighted by Christian Eigler’s equaliser on the hour-mark.

Goals from Papiss Demba Cisse and Heiko Butscher in the second half saw Freiburg come from behind to defeat Hoffenheim 3-2 at the badenova-Stadion.

Julian Schuster put Freiburg in front after 23 minutes but goals to Vedad Ibisevic and Ryan Babel, his first for the club since joining from Liverpool, put the visitors in front at the break.

But Freiburg responded impressively, with Cisse scoring his 20th league goal of the season from the spot before Ibisevic grabbed the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

Daum aims for Bundesliga survival

New Eintracht Frankfurt coach Christoph Daum is targeting Bundesliga survival, beginning with Sunday’s match away to Wolfsburg.

Daum, who took over at the Commerzbank-Arena on March 22, arrives with the team struggling in 14th on the table, just three points clear of the relegation zone.

Wolfsburg are four points worse off in 17th place, meaning the outcome of Sunday’s clash could go some way to determining which of the two teams will stay in the top flight next season.

“I believe that we can stay in the first league with this team and that is what is most important right now,” Daum said.

“With a little bit of change in attitude … we can set an example as early as in the match against Wolfsburg. That is what counts.”

Upon accepting the job, Daum claimed that he was ‘a concept coach, not a fire-fighter’ and insisted he had been hired with next season’s Bundesliga campaign in mind.

But the 57-year-old has been forced to backtrack, acknowledging that the remaining matches of the season must be the priority.

“What happens in the future, what will be possible next year – that is the second step,” he said.

“We first have to battle through the current situation and can’t talk about what will be possible with this team.”

“I want to stay in the first league – my point of view is only directed at the next seven games, that is what I am looking at.”

“Afterwards we can talk about whatever you want and about the future.”

“But our future is going to be decided in Wolfsburg, at home against Bremen, in Hoffenheim, that is where our future is decided and not within any declarations for next season.”

Newcastle to Turn to Consistent £8m Rated Bundesliga Man for Extra Firepower

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Hamburg striker Mladen Petric as Alan Pardew looks to bring in new attacking options following the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January. The Croatian international is perhaps best known in England for scoring the crucial winner in a Euro 2008 fixture that put paid to Steve McClaren’s chances of qualification.

The powerfully built 30 year old has been a big success since his move to the Bundesliga in 2007 where he spent one season at Borussia Dortmund before moving to Hamburg’s Imtech Arena in the summer of 2008. Petric has gone on to become a consistent marksman and has netted 11 goals thus far this term.

Pardew is currently having to make do with a fairly average selection of strikers at his disposal after seemingly not having enough to bring in an adequate replacement for Carroll, who left on transfer deadline day. The Magpies currently rely on the likes Shola Ameobi, Shefki Kuqi, Peter Lovenkrands and Leon Best, all of whom are hard working if not prolific striking options. Also available for the St James’ Park boss is youngster Nile Ranger who shows great potential.

Petric may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League having plied his trade in exclusively in Switzerland before his move to Germany. A move for the experienced striker would cost Newcastle in the region of

Bundesliga wrap: Leverkusen edge closer to leaders

Bayer Leverkusen cut their deficit on leaders Borussia Dortmund to seven points with a 2-0 win over Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Josef Heynckes’ side did the damage early at the Bay Arena, with Eren Derdiyok scoring in the 19th minute before a Christoph Metzelder own goal doubled the home side’s advantage eight minutes on.

The result piles the pressure on runaway leaders Dortmund, which dropped two points in their 1-1 draw with Mainz on Saturday.

Neither Stuttgart nor Wolfsburg did their survival prospects any help as the two relegation-threatened teams played out a 1-1 draw.

Wolves had taken the lead in the 40th minute through Brazilian Grafite, and the goal looked to have helped them secure a valuable three points, until an injury-time equaliser from Georg Niedermeier extended Stuttgart’s unbeaten league run to four games.

The draw meant Wolfsburg remain second-last, two points from Stuttgart in 15th.

Bundesliga wrap: Dortmund lose, Bayern romp

Hoffenheim dealt Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund just their third loss of the season, while Bayern Munich thrashed Hamburg on Saturday.

Ninth-placed Hoffenheim had not won in four games heading into their clash with the runaway league leaders at Rhein Neckar Arena, but Vedad Ibisevic’s goal in the 63rd minute was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for the hosts.

Bayern Munich’s hopes of reeling in Dortmund are all but over, but they at least snapped a three-game losing streak in all competitions with their 6-0 triumph over Hamburg at the Allianz Arena.

Dutch international winger Arjen Robben scored a hat-trick, netting Bayern’s first three goals in the 40th, 47th and 55th minutes.

France midfielder Franck Ribery added the fourth in the 64th minute – assisted by Robben – before Germany attacker Thomas Mueller made it 5-0 15 minutes later.

A Heiko Westermann own-goal topped off a rampant victory for Bayern and moved them above Mainz into fourth spot on the table, though Louis van Gaal’s side have played an extra game.

Schalke 04 moved into 10th place with a late 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Veltins Arena.

Spaniard Jurado put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time from the penalty spot, but Georgios Tzavellas equalised in the 70th minute for Frankfurt.

Substitute striker Angelos Charisteas took just 60 seconds to have an impact on the game after coming off the bench for Mario Gavranovic, scoring the winner in the 84th minute.

Kaiserslautern upset seventh-placed Freiburg 2-1 with a 90th-minute winner to Erwin Hoffer at the Fritz Walter Stadion.

Freiburg forward Adam Nemec scored at both ends to leave the match poised at 1-1, before Hoffer’s heroics helped Kaiserslautern out of the relegation zone.

Nuremburg came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at the Volkswagen Arena.

Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic had put the hosts on target for a crucial victory with a 23rd-minute goal, but Nuremburg were level at half-time courtesy of defender Philipp Woolscheid.

Swedish centre back Per Nilsson nabbed the winner for Nuremburg at the death to leave Wolves just one point outside the drop.
