Wolves have to settle for a draw in the derby

ohara2A draw was probably a fair result in a game that Wolves bossed in the first half and Albion the second, but it always feels bad when a win is taken away in the last minutes of the game. Wolves played very well in the first half and deserved to be ahead but they did not retain possession as well after the break and brought pressure onto themselves and the equaliser finally came in injury time at the end of the game.

McCarthy made one change to the line up with Foley playing on the right of midfield instead of Hamill. And O’Hara reverted to the attacking midfield role that suits him best. And it was Wolves who made by far the better start to the game with patient passing and some good breaks down the flanks. Henry and Jarvis who had been disappointing in recent weeks both had good first halves with Jarvis regularly having the beating of his full back.

Wolves took a deserved lead five minutes before the break after they were awarded a free kick for a foul on Doyle just outside the left side of the area. Wolves piled players into the box but Milijas played the ball square to O’Hara who curled an excellent shot into the top corner.

It looked like the second half was going to follow a similar pattern with Wolves dominating possession and they should have increased their lead 5 minutes in. Olsson misjudged a through ball and his header fell to Jarvis who only had the keeper to beat but with the ball bouncing awkwardly he steered his shot wide of the keeper and the far post. And Albion then sparked into life with mistakes by Henry and Doyle gifting them possession. Berra blocked one shot and Hennessey another but then it was Albions turn to miss a sitter as Odemwingie’s downward header fell to Fortune who incredibly failed to connect from 4 yards out. Brunt’s corners were a constant threat for the Albion and Wolves were grateful that Fortune on the day looked quite hopeless.

Wolves tried a positive substitution to try to stem the tide and replaced Milijas with Ebanks Blake but Albion were still on top and Jarvis cleared one off the line. Vela came on for Albion and immediately added some quality to their attacking but Wolves almost conjured a second when Doyle and Ebanks Blake combined and when Tamas intercepted the final ball into Doyle he almost put the ball in his own net. But in injury time Albion were to get their reward when Morrison was allowed too much time to shoot and although Hennessey was able to block his shot, Vela turned in the rebound.

Hennessey – made some good saves and showed his improved dominance of his area. Possibly at fault for the equaliser but in truth he probably did well to block Morrison’s effort as it came through a crowded area.

Zubar – after some loose passing early on settled to have a good game defensively, and on the overlap in the first half.

Elokobi – certainly an improved defender in recent weeks and added some compusure to his game as his confidence grows. Amused Wolves fans with an attacking run second half that saw Albion players trying to tackle him but simply bouncing off his powerful frame.

Stearman – possibly Wolves most improved player this season. Had another good game with some excellent tackles and good distribution.

Berra – probably the most consistent player in the team.

Foley – never really imposed himself on the game.

Henry – his first half showing was as well as he has played for months but gave the ball away a few times in the second half.

Milijas – helps Wolves retain possession and set up the goal. Also kept Brunt quiet for most of the game and his replacement by SEB didn’t help at all as it presented Albion with more space in midfield.

Jarvis – excellent in the first half when he looked Wolves main threat. Missed a good chance early in the second half and struggled to get in the game late on.

O’Hara – superb goal and Wolves best player as he seemed to be all over the pitch and rarely wasted a pass. Sign him up!

Doyle – not his best game as he struggled to find space and gave the ball away a few times second half.

Three points would have meant so much to Wolves but it wasn’t to be. The home game against Blackpool really is a must win game now cause Wolves remain bottom but the table remains very tight. On this showing Wolves are certainly not a worse team than Albion and the signing of O’Hara may well be crucial in the final months.
