Emirates skipper says his boss would get the sack if he was in charge of a top La Liga club.
After doing the best Premier League XI last week I thought it was only right this week I do the worst! So here it goes.
Apparently, there is still a chance, although the football associations of each individual country, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, do appear to be unlikely to reach any amicable agreement.
Team
It is worth looking at the players and trying to work out what a current Great Britain team might look like.
The goalkeeper position would be pretty much up for grabs. The main contenders would be England’s Joe Hart and Scotland’s Craig Gordon. I would go for Gordon if only he wasn’t injured so often. He is that rare specimen of being a good Scottish goalkeeper!
The defence would definitely have an English feel to it as James Collins of Wales and Northern Ireland’s Jonny Evans probably have only a small claim. Scotland would hope that Alan Hutton would have a chance of getting the right back slot, but I think Glenn Johnson is probably the better bet.
Pains
In central defence England would provide Terry, Ferdinand, Dawson, Jagielka, Cahill, etc. The left back, although it pains me to say it, would definitely be Ashley Cole.
In midfield, Wales would put Aaron Ramsey forward with some justification and Gareth Bale would seem to be shoe-in for the team. Scotland might suggest Scott Brown, Darren Fletcher and Charlie Adam. Northern Ireland probably don’t have anyone of sufficient quality.
England midfielders would include Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon, Steve Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Jack Wilshire.
Short
Up front Northern Ireland come up a little short again. Scotland would supply the old war-horse Kenny Miller and Wales would be represented by Craig Bellamy. England’s hopes would be pinned on Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe.
So that would be the squad of players to pick from and on paper, it looks as though a pretty decent team could be set-up out of it.
Obviously choosing a team is totally subjective and we would all have different ideas, but I’m going to pick mine and encourage you to offer your opinions.
Fit
Playing as a 4-3-3 formation, assuming everyone was fit and in form, I would go with the following;
Craig Gordon
Glenn Johnson, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole
Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshire, Steve Gerrard
Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale.
What would you change?
Fri 25 March, 2011Gary Lineker in his Guardian interview:
"You've got no chance of reaching the top if you're just playing for money. No, you play because you love it - and if you've got a talent you'll love it even more. You're not telling me that five-year-olds go: 'If I do this I'll earn lots of money and have a great life.'
The rest of the interview is equally bland.
Benoit Assou Ekotto:
"Martel said I go to England for the money but why do players come to his club? Because they look nice? All people, everyone, when they go to a job, it's for the money. So I don't understand why, when I said I play for the money, people were shocked. Oh, he's a mercenary. Every player is like that."
The spin would be Assou Ekotto the hard eyed realist with Lineker as the youthful idealist who still believes in values like honour and love of country. But Lineker in his second career as TV pundit is also extremely cautious about his public image which precludes him from expressing any strong sentiment. Assou Ekotto would have treated his illustrious Spurs predecessor with contempt.

Barcelona full-back Dani Alves reveals that he wants to feel valued at Camp Nou before he signs a new deal.
The Brazilian is not entirely satisfied with the club’s efforts regarding his contract extension.
“I don’t feel the club have bent over backwards to renew my contract – it’s a feeling I have,” Alves told Sport.
“I just want an agreement to be reached now, or within a few days. I don’t like the fact there have been so many rumours – I’m as committed to this project as anyone in the squad.
“I won’t be a hypocrite – if the club want to replace me it could cost them dear. What Dani wants is for the club to value him depending on his importance and influence within the squad. If they do that, I’ll be delighted and if not, thanks for these years.”
Nevertheless, Alves says he is fully committed to team’s cause.
“I will break my back for this team, even if I don’t renew,” he said. “It’s a dream to form part of this dressing room and whatever is said, written or protested, my name is already written in the history of this club.”

Barcelona B striker Nolito has admitted he would sign for Real Madrid if Florentino Perez were to offer him a contract.
Unlike most other players groomed in famous La Masia, Nolito says he would have no problems making a switch to Real Madrid.
