Wayne Rooney Apologies for Expletive Ridden Outburst: Why Are the FA Investigating This Incident?
Wayne Rooney has apologised for swearing into a television camera during Manchester United’s win over West Ham.
The England striker uttered an audible expletive following the completion of his hat-trick at Upton Park, which helped United come from 2-0 down to win 4-2.
Rooney’s outburst prompted an immediate on-air apology from broadcasters Sky Sports.
The Football Association revealed that they would examine the footage before deciding whether to take any action against Rooney.
In a statement released by his club, the England international has put his outburst down to the emotion of putting his side ahead.
He said: “I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching.
“Emotions were running high and on reflection my heat-of-the-moment reaction was inappropriate. It was not aimed at anyone in particular.”
It is understood that taking action over a player swearing into a camera may be unprecedented, but the FA’s rules do appear to have a provision about such behaviour. (Sky Sports)
This is slightly bizarre. Whilst clearly swearing during football matches is not the nicest thing in the world it is also not uncommon so one wonders why this incident is being picked upon with such intensity. I could understand if we were talking about a player abusing an official, something that happens a hundred times a game without any action being taken, but for Wayne Rooney to be under investigation for this incident seems wholly over the top.
Clearly emotions were high and Man United had just completed an expert recovery, hence Rooney’s outburst. People will come out and make statements about players having to set examples and about footballers being role models, but such talk is mindless. A footballers job is to play the game, end of, they do not ask people to replicate their behaviour and therefore they should not be used as figureheads.
You see players, including Rooney, swear repeatedly with ferocity at referees and linesmen, but nothing ever gets done about that, so why this particular episode is being looked into at all is beyond me.

Yes, occasional footballer Wayne Bridge has found love with another very attractive woman and with any luck this one will not somehow find herself in the clutches of Chelsea skipper John Terry. Plenty of nice images of the singer after the jump.
