Europa berth on the line for Sevilla

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido said his club need to put their fight for European qualification to one side when they face Villarreal.

Sevilla are seventh in the table on 46 points but will be hoping to finish fifth or sixth to grab an all-important Europa League qualification spot for next season.

They need to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-0 defeat away at Getafe with a win over fourth-placed Villarreal at home on Sunday, but del Nido said they cannot afford to be distracted by their plight in the league.

“At this stage in the season, we need to focus on Sunday’s game and on beating Villarreal,” del Nido said.

“We will look to make certain that we finish fifth or sixth in the table, and then see what happens in the next match after that.

“The table shows that it is getting more and more difficult. Especially with Villarreal winning last night while we were not able to take a point from our last two away games. The problem is more to do with us not winning than with our opponents doing well.”

But despite failing to reach the heights of previous campaigns, del Nido refused to concede that this season had been a disappointment.

“Failure would be to finish 10th, or eighteenth and get relegated. We are fighting above what our budget allows, and we aren’t talking about failure,” del Nido said.

“We are talking about Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid and Valencia – rich cities, who have other economic possibilities.”

Europa Cup: Benfica overcome PSV Eindhoven (6-3 agg)

By Shourin Roy on April 15, 2011 8:22 PM | Comments | TrackBacksShare|

Portugese giants Benfica drew PSV Eindhoven after falling behind two goals as the spectacularly named Balázs Dzsudzsák and Jeremain Lens scored for the Dutch team.

Guus Hiddink, the former PSV coach who brought them so much success was honoured at half time but he could not help his team tide the Benfica comeback sparked by Luisao's acrobatic scissor kick. It turned worse as César Peixoto was brought down and Oscar Cardozo duly converted the penalty. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and Benfica went through to the semi-finals on a 6-3 aggregate on the crest of their 4-1 first leg win.

It was a red letter day for Portugese teams as Braga drew Dynamo Kyiv, 0-0 but progressed forward on a 1-1 away goal advantage gained in the first leg. This despite the fact Braga played a man down for more than a hour when Paulo Cesar was sent off in the 29th minute (video)

Jose Mourinho's former club, Porto routed Spartak Moscow, 5-2 for a 10-3 aggregate victory. Hulk, Cristian Rodriguez, Fredy Guarin, Falcao and Ruben Micael scored for the visitors while Artem Dzjuba and Ferreira Ari scored consolation goals for the Moscow side. (video). As the clip shows it would be difficult to find worse defending.

The Europa Cup semi-finals will be an all Iberian affair with the three Portugese clubs joining Spanish side Villarreal who finished off FC Twente, 3-1 for a 8-3 aggregate with American born Giuseppe Rossi getting on board with a penalty conversion (video)

Europa League Here We Come?

By: Brian | March 23rd, 2011
    Tweet

With 8 games remaining in a season that would be classified as disappointing by most Everton fans, the one question that remains is if Everton can qualify once more for Europe. Despite Everton’s recent rise up the table, any chance of making it to Europe has been complicated first by Birmingham’s victory in the Carling Cup, and also by the semifinal draw in the FA Cup that ensures the winner of the Stoke-Bolton match a place in Europe. This means that Everton has to finish 5th this season, displacing either Liverpool, Chelsea, or Tottenham, all of whom are hoping ideally for a Champions League berth, but one will have to settle for Europa League qualification, and the other a 6th place finish. Sure it is a tall task, almost certain to fail, but what else is the internet good for besides some mindless speculation.

Currently the Toffees sit in 8th place with 8 games to play this season. They are also 9 points behind fifth place Tottenham who have one game in hand on them, but would also have to pass Bolton and Liverpool who are tied on points with Everton and 5 points ahead respectively. It is certainly plausible for Everton to climb past both teams to 6th place, but overcoming Spurs will certainly be a bit more difficult.

Looking at Everton’s upcoming schedule, games against Aston Villa, Wolves, Blackburn, Wigan, and West Brom should all be wins by Everton, which would give the squad a nice 15 points to move towards Europe. Of course given the season that Everton has had this year, instead of 15 points  the squad is more likely to get around 12 which isn’t to bad.

The other three games left include a visit to Old Trafford, and home games against Chelsea and Manchester City. One of the positives from this season has been how well the team has played against the top teams in the league, and with two of these games at home, it is easy to see Everton coming away with victories against City and Chelsea, and while it is extremely unlikely for Everton to get any points at Old Trafford, a draw could happen.

So in the end,  Everton probably should get about 18 points out of the remaining 24, which should certainly be enough to move into 6th place. The real question will be how Spurs and Chelsea play over the remainder of the season, if btoh play well, then Everton’s chances of getting to Europe is highly unlikely, but if either team goes into a nosedive, there may be a chance for the Toffees to head to Europe. Of course this whole idea is based on the squad winning the games they are supposed to, and competing with the better teams in the league, so most likely the squad is going to finish 7th or 8th this season.

The team is off this weekend with the international break, but check in with us as we preview and review the various Blues who are on international duty. Until next time COYB!

Europa League clash hurt City: Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti believes the fact that Manchester City played on Thursday handed his Chelsea side the advantage in Sunday’s 2-0 home win.

David Luiz’s header and an excellent individual effort from Ramirez secured an important victory for Chelsea as they seek to secure a Champions League qualification place for next season.

Chelsea boss Ancelotti praised the efforts of his players, but also acknowledged that City may have been left underprepared after meeting Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League on Thursday.

“It was a very difficult game,” Ancelotti said.

“We played a good game – we had focus, spirit and a good attitude.”

“First half we had to be quicker in front to get the right solution. Defensively we were good.”

“Man City lost a bit of power because they played on Thursday.”

John Terry’s imminent return to the England captaincy in next Saturday’s European Championship qualifier against Wales was cast into doubt when the centre back appeared to struggling with an injury in the second half.

But according to Ancelotti, the 30-year-old will be fit to play for his country at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

“He doesn’t have a problem to play for England,” Ancelotti said.

City boss Roberto Mancini also felt a lack of recovery time after the Dynamo encounter was a factor in the loss.

“We played a good game. But we played three days ago against Kiev,” Mancini said.

“In the last 20-25 minutes we were so tired.”

The visitors were without Carlos Tevez, but Mancini refused to use the absence of the captain as an excuse.

“Carlos is a good player, but (Edin) Dzeko and Balotelli are good players,” he said.

“After 70 minutes it was normal that Chelsea had more possession.”

“After that we conceded a goal and it changed.”

Do English teams take the Europa League seriously?

English sides Manchester City and Liverpool both head into the second legs of their Europa League ties with deficit’s from the first legs.

Liverpool host Portuguese side Sporting Braga at Anfield tonight after losing 1-0 in the first leg.

Manchester City suffered a 2-0 defeat at Dynamo Kiev in their first leg.

City are in a rather worse position than the Reds but you have got to ask yourself do these clubs take the Europa League seriously?

Rotation

Throughout their Europa League campaigns Liverpool and City have used a rotation policy. Now many people will say that clubs of their stature should have enough strength in-depth to cope with rotating the first eleven. That has been true up until this stage of the competition.

The likes of Dynamo Kiev and Sporting Braga are no mugs. In fact Kiev have European experience of playing in the Champions League and Sporting Braga dropped out of the group stages of the same competition this season. However it seems that the English clubs have underestimated their opponents.

Recovery

Liverpool will have the easier of the tasks going into the second leg just one down but it will still be tough for the Reds. An away goal by Braga would make it very difficult for Kenny Dalglish’s men to recover. Manchester City have to overcome a two goal losing margin.

Their clash will definately prove the tougher. City have the firepower to overcome the Ukrainians if Roberto Mancini decides to use it. A positive for the Citizens is the fact that Kiev have a terrible record on English soil, they have failed to win in nine attempts in England.

Manchester City also have a very strong home record in the Europa League having won the last three games and scored three goals on each of those occasions. A full strength Manchester City should have enough to progress into the quarter-finals but the big question is how strong a team will Roberto Mancini pick?

If he does indeed have hopes of winning the trophy outright then he will go with his strongest line-up but if he sees it as a distraction from the Premier League then he could field a weakened side. I would say Liverpool will probably field a strong side against Braga with there being a chance of progressing into the quarter-finals.

Champions League

Everybody knows that the Europa League isn’t the Champions League but its a competition still well worth winning. Manchester City particular seem to be concentrating all their efforts on making the Champions League spots this season and their progression in other competitions could suffer.

Liverpool are still in with a very slim chance of a Champions League spot but I think for now the fans will have to be happy with taking part in UEFA’s second competition. The fans may not like that they are not currently in Europe’s elite competition but that’s the situation they currently find themselves in.

Trophy

The Europa League may not be the most glamorous competition in the world but there is still a trophy to play for. Neither Liverpool or Manchester City can afford to turn their noses up at the opportunity of winning a trophy. City are still in the FA Cup but they face bitter-rivals Manchester United in the semi-finals.

The Europa League is Liverpool’s only opportunity to win silverware this season and at this point in time I don’t think Liverpool fans would turn down a trip to the final in Dublin come May.

Serious

To me it’s strange that English teams put out weakened sides in the last 16 of any competition. For me both Liverpool and Manchester City should take these ties seriously. If they don’t then they don’t deserve to be in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Europa Cup: Liverpool fall to Braga

By Shourin Roy on March 11, 2011 4:23 PM | Comments | TrackBacksShare|

"To come away just one goal behind after the first-half performance is very fortunate," said Dalglish. "While they didn't create a lot of chances, we created most of our own problems ourselves and when you play as badly as that you are fortunate to lose only 1-0."

Couldn't have been more plain spoken. No excuses. No blaming the referee or the pitch.

Braga's Brazilians made sure that Liverpool never gained a foothold in the first half. Alan converted a spot kick after Mossaro was brought down by Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

Things improved when Andy Carroll was introduced but the Merseyside club ran out of time.

Europa League preview: Dynamo Kiev v Manchester City

Manchester City must overcome Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev if they are to extend their Europa League campaign into the quarter-finals.

City secured top spot in Group A on goal difference ahead of Lech Posnan and booked their place in the third round with a 3-0 aggregate win over Greek club Aris Salonika.

Third in the English Premier League, seven points behind leaders Manchester United, City are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions and won 1-0 at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

They are also through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and have a strong chance of reaching the last four in that competition, if they can beat Reading.

The FA Cup tie against Championship opposition comes just three days after their trip to Kiev, in what is shaping as a decisive month for manager Roberto Mancini.

While the Italian coach’s priority remains Champions League qualification, he will be keen for the team to progress in both the Europa League and FA Cup in a bid to end City’s 35-year trophy drought.

But Dynamo will be no pushovers in Thursday’s first leg.

Experienced European campaigners, they topped Group E ahead of Belarusian club BATE Borisov, beating the Eredivisie’s AZ Alkmaar home and away.

An 8-1 aggregate victory over Turkish side Besiktas in the second round was a further indication of the threat they pose.

Dynamo are coached by Yuri Syomin, who led the club to the league championship in 2008/09, and are second in the Ukrainian Premier League this season.

They beat Metalurg Donetsk 2-0 away from home on Sunday in what was their first domestic match since November following a three-month winter hiatus.

City are without second-choice goalkeeper Shay Given and wide midfielder Adam Johnson through injury, while centre-back Kolo Toure is suspended indefinitely following a failed drug test.

James Milner is also in doubt for the trip to Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium with a hamstring problem.

Europa League preview: Porto flying high ahead of Russia trip

FC Porto travel to CSKA Moscow on Thursday armed with one of the strongest attacks in the Europa League.

Porto, 11 points clear of second-placed Benfica, are running away with the Liga Sagres and on course to collect their 25th title.

They topped their Europa League group ahead of Besiktas and accounted for La Liga side Sevilla in the second round.

After a 2-1 victory in Spain and a 1-0 loss in the return at home, Porto needed the away goals rule to get past Sevilla.

But knocking out the experienced Champions League campaigners remains an impressive achievement.

Porto can boast two of the best strikers outside of the major European leagues in Brazilian Hulk and Colombian Radamel Falcao, ably assisted by Portuguese midfielder Silvestre Varela.

The team is coached by 33-year-old prodigy Andre Villas Boas, who served as Porto assistant under Jose Mourinho and is tipped by many to replicate the master tactician’s impressive achievements.

Standing in their way are CSKA, who won the competition as the UEFA Cup in 2005.

They reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season, losing 2-0 on aggregate to eventual winners Inter Milan.

CSKA are part of a strong Russian presence in this season’s competition.

Russian Premier League leaders Zenit St Petersburg – who won the UEFA Cup in 2008 – are away to FC Twente, while Spartak Moscow are also in the Netherlands to meet Ajax Amsterdam.

All of the Eredivisie’s three representatives are at home, with league leaders PSV Eindhoven playing host to Scottish Premier League side Glasgow Rangers.

In other matches, Portuguese side Braga – who edged out Porto to achieve Champions League qualification last season – are at home to English club Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Manchester City also have an away match – they make the long flight to take on Dynamo Kiev of the Ukraine.

Villarreal, fourth in La Liga, travel to Germany to play Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, while French club Paris Saint-Germain are in Portugal to meet Benfica.
