Season over for Ireland

Stephen Ireland’s wretched 2010/11 campaign is over due to an ankle injury, Newcastle United announced on Wednesday.

The on-loan midfielder sustained the injury during the Magpies’ 1-1 draw at Blackpool on Saturday, and scans have revealed the problem is serious enough to keep him sidelined for the remaining four matches of the season.

The news will come as a bitter blow to the former Republic of Ireland international, who was hoping to convince Toon manager Alan Pardew he was worthy of a long-term deal in the season run-in.

Ireland, on loan from Aston Villa, has managed just two substitute appearances since moving to St James’ Park in January due to ongoing injury problems.

The 24-year-old carried a knee complaint to the North East in the January transfer window, and was struck down by a thigh injury on his return to training at St James’ Park in March.

Ireland had hoped to resurrect his career at Newcastle after an unhappy sojourn in the Midlands, which ended in January after he failed to impress Villa manager Gerard Houllier.

The former Manchester City man was shipped to Villa Park in the off-season as part of the deal which saw James Milner join the Sky Blues, but he managed just 12 appearances – five as a substitute – in the Villa shirt.

Friendly previews: World Cup hosts square off, Uruguay face Ireland

Qatar and Russia will go head to head in an international friendly on Tuesday in a battle of the future World Cup hosts.

Russia – winner of the rights to host the 2018 Cup – will travel to Doha’s Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Tuesday, which is not one of Qatar’s 12 host stadiums at the 2022 Cup tournament. The scheduled match between the two countries was planned within days of their respective Cup hosting rights being granted by FIFA last year.Dick Advocaat’s Russia will be keen to bounce back after being held to a scoreless draw with Armenia on Saturday, while it is Qatar’s first outing since losing 3-2 in the Asian Cup quarter-finals to eventual champions Japan. The Republic of Ireland will host Uruguay in Dublin, in the two nations’ first clash since the Irish welcomed the South Americans to their capital in 1986.Costa Rica will christen their new stadium in San Jose when they welcome an Argentina side fresh from a 1-1 draw with the United States. Harnessing the talents of Lionel Messi will be in the forefront of the Central Americans’ minds, with the Barcelona attacker instrumental in Argentina’s goal against the US on Saturday. The Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica was donated by the Chinese government as part of the two nations’ diplomatic relationship, established in 2007.Portugal can return to winning ways after two matches without victory when they host Finland at the Estadio Municipal de Aveiro. Missing captain Cristiano Ronaldo to injury, Paulo Bento’s side had a first international goal from Porto winger Silvestre Varela to thank for their 1-1 friendly draw with Chile on Saturday. Also in action on Tuesday, China host Honduras, Jordan do battle with Korea DPR, Oman welcome Tunisia, Belarus take on Canada, Peru face off with Ecuador, Cyprus play Bulgaria, Slovakia and Denmark go head to head and Poland travel to Greece.Australia can atone for their drubbing at the hands of Germany in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when the two nations face off in a friendly in Moenchengladbach, while Chile-Colombia, Ukraine-Italy, France-Croatia, England-Ghana, Cuba-Panama, USA-Paraguay and Mexico-Venezuela are also in friendly action on Tuesday.

Doyle injury sours Ireland win

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has revealed Kevin Doyle may miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury on national duty.

Doyle had to be substituted after just 17 minutes of Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Macedonia, with his injury putting a dampener on the 2-1 win that saw Ireland share top spot in Group B.Trapattoni said after the match that Doyle could miss the rest of the season, in a blow to the striker’s relegation-threatened English Premier League club Wolves.”It’s his medial ligament. I think he may be out for one or two months, so it’s a very serious injury,” Trapattoni said.”But I hope by May or June he can come back and we can have him for the match in Macedonia.”Aiden McGeady opened the scoring for Ireland inside the first two minutes, with Robbie Keane’s strike after 21 minutes doubling Ireland’s advantage in Dublin.Ivan Trichowski’s 45th-minute goal gave Ireland some nervous moments, but they held on to lead the group standings ahead of Russia on goal difference. But with three countries now on 10 points and Armenia two points in arrears, Trapattoni knows how tenuous his side’s hold is on top spot.”At the minute, our group is very, very in the balance. It’s a pity we missed the penalty against Slovakia (in a 1-1 draw in October). We could have been at the top,” he said.”But I have three reasons to be happy. One reason is the three points, the second is the performance and the third, which is equally important, is that players like Darren O’Dea and Darron Gibson and (Kevin) Foley – players I have been questioned for selecting – have played very well.”Macedonia coach Mirsad Jonuz rued his side’s penchant for crucial mistakes, saying: “At very crucial moments in the game, we needed to play well to get a result, but we made mistakes and so we lost the game.”"Ireland deserved the victory, but they scored two goals from our mistakes. In the second half, we created enough chances to get something from the game.”

N Ireland goalie passes the ball to Chamakh

By Anish on November 18, 2010 9:33 AM | Comments | TrackBacksShare|

He didn't mean to pass the ball to Chamakh but that's what N Ireland goalie's Alan Blayney's attempted clearance ended up becoming. He kicked the ball onto an onrushing Marouane Chamakh and Morrocco were one goal up against N Ireland in the friendly.
However a late penalty from Rory Patterson gave them an eventual draw but Blayney will be kicking himself for awhile even so...
