Ancelotti: Ramires foul ´a clear penalty´

Carlo Ancelotti is adamant Chelsea were denied a late penalty in their 1-0 Champions League quarter-final loss to Manchester United.

Blues midfielder Ramires appeared to have been brought down by United’s Patrice Evra in the first leg’s dying stages, but the referee’s whistled stayed silent despite Chelsea’s appeals for a spot kick.

The penalty could have put Chelsea level, after Wayne Rooney’s goal handed United a 1-0 lead on 24 minutes.

“One. It was clear,” the Ancelotti said. “It was the foul on Ramires.”

“That one was a clear penalty.”

Blues custodian Petr Cech was also insistent there was a case of oversight on the match official’s part.

“I think everybody saw what happened. You can see it clearly on the telly, but the most important person didn’t see it, that’s the main thing,” he told ITV.

Despite conceding an away goal, Ancelotti said he was satisfied with his side’s showing on Wednesday.

“The performance was not bad. We had some moments where we weren’t able to have good control of the game with possession, in the middle of the first half, but in general the performance was good,” he said, with the second leg to played at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

“We had chances but it was difficult when we went 1-0 down to come back into the game.”

“They used the counter-attack very well, but we had some chances.”

“We hit the post and should have had a penalty and (Edwin) Van der Sar made a fantastic save from (Fernando) Torres.”

“We are disappointed but fortunately we still have 90 minutes at Old Trafford. It will not be easy, but last season at the same moment we needed to win there and we won the title.”

This Ramires goal vs Man City helped Chelsea seal a 2-0 win over Roberto Mancini’s team and took the Blues into third place in the league at the expense of the Citizens.

The Ramires goal against Man City was an excellent individual goal from the Brazilian midfielder as he skipped past several Man City defenders before adding the final touch and beating Hart. Before Ramires’ goal, Chelsea had taken the lead via a David Luiz headed goal .

Another reason why Ramires has a shot

“I never see myself as a hero, and Didier is no villain for missing the penalty. It is a team game so these things are not individual things. I don’t come into games believing I could be a hero, I am just there to help the team and the team showed a lot of character and determination in the game.”

Our newest midfielder goes on:

“I think we deserved more than we got from (the Tottenham game) but now we have to look forward, train hard and make sure we get the results that we want.”

More goodness:

“Training here is even better, I like the fact that training is intense because that way you prepare for matches as you should do. In previous clubs training was never so intense, but I pushed myself harder so that physically, tactically, I was always ready to play.”

Ramires has been catching heat from the Chelsea support even before his move to the club was made official. I’ve attempted to quell the protests, but it hasn’t exactly been a successful campaign.

But the above quotes from his Thursday interview with Chelseafc.com have to bring a smile to your face, even if you detest the Brazilian. You know, you shouldn’t detest anyone. What would your mother say?

This kid is a class act. I still believe he’ll come good, sooner rather than later with a mentality like this.

« Soundoff: Who do you fancy in the Champions League? | Home | arn00bI'm one of his biggest doubters. I don't detest him at all. I don't know him on a personal level and in a way, I could be in his shoes. If I played for Chelsea most would hate and boo me because I'm not that good.

Not that I'm comparing myself to him. He's a professional footballer, I'm not.

There's a few reasons about people not liking him. He wasn't rated before coming. No one said "Please sign Ramires."
Ancelotti didn't seem to want him and it looks like another pick by some suits with no footballing experience. That adds to the heat, because Ancelotti has to play someone who may or may not fit into his system, and the transfer, if it flops, would be blamed on Ancelotti in the papers. Fans are fickle, but they're not stupid and they're not that fickle to turn on Ancelotti for a transfer he didn't ask for. Of course, management would then say that Ancelotti was provided transfer funds, but no actual power to make the picks.

And then there's his price tag, which is, again, not his fault. That's how Portuguese clubs function - buy cheap, sell high.

He came at a bad time and didn't show solid performances from the start, which is understandable. Some people need time to adjust.

However, all the feelings of Chelsea mismanagement, the bad taste of expensive flops, coach undermining, the bad run of games and the possibility of losing the league and Carlo are projected on this player who had nothing to do with anything.

I wish him all the best and I hope that he will be ultimately judged by performances and potential and not by everything going wrong around him projected onto him.blog comments powered by Disqus
