Football Transfer Rumors: Jose Enrique to Liverpool

It seems King Kenny has gone on another raid for Newcastle’s promising full back Jose Enrique as he looks to fill out his backline after being unable to tempt Gael Clichy. Rumors have been swirling around a move to Anfield for Enrique since Liverpool legend Phil Thompson spilled the beans on the transfer back in April. Apparently everything was set for him to move immediately after the end of the season, but was put to hold as the Reds thought they might be able to get a better deal for Clichy.

It seems that Clichy was simply not interested in putting on a Liverpool jersey and has opted for Manchester City instead for the absurd bargain of 7 million pounds. Newcastle will be expecting far more than that for Enrique, who cost the 6.3 million pounds to sign, and hold their defense together. He obviously wasn’t a bargain, I’d say they paid 10 million pounds for him at least. Either way, it should be interesting to see if an Arsenal style exodus from Newcastle will now follow after the loos of so many top players. Only time will tell, but one thing seems certain, Jose Enrigue will be wearing the red of the Kop come August.

Liverpool target on the move; Premier League keeper hints at summer transfer

Liverpool target on the move

Ivory Coast international Gervinho could be on the move next summer as he doesn’t plan to accept Lille’s latest contract offer.

The 23-year-old forward has attracted a lot of attention with his performances for Lille and he is thought to be looking for a new challenge.

Les Gones have offered the player a new and improved contract as his current one is set to expire in June 2012, but Gervinho is unlikely to accept it as he plans to leave the club at the end of the season.

The latest news will alert a number of interested clubs, such as Liverpool, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid since Lille could be forced to sell the forward in the summer should he reject a contract extension.

Arsenal Boss to Sell Six Stars to Help Build £40m Transfer Fund

Arsenal are ready to conduct a major clear-out of his Emirates squad regardless of whether he manages to lead the Gunners to the Premier League title. Arsene Wenger will look to offload a number of under-performing players as well as ditch others who are stalling on contract talks as he looks to generate significant funds to re-invest in big name signings this summer.

Gael Clichy is seemingly unsure as to whether he wishes to stay at the club he has spent eight years at and after the latest round of contract talks broke down, Wenger is now ready to listen to offers for the French international left back, not least because he has a ready made replacement in Kieran Gibbs raring to take the 25 year old’s place. The likes of Real Madrid and Juventus are thought to be interested in the former Cannes defender.

After dropping yet another clanger Manuel Almunia is likely to be sold just as soon as a side comes in with a decent offer and a move back to Spain appears to be on the cards. Utility man Emmanuel Eboue signed a contract extension at the tail end of last year but again if an offer of note was to come in for the Ivory Coast international then Wenger is prepared to allow the 27 year old to leave.

Brazilian midfielder Denilson has found first team football hard to come by this term and after managing 36 Premier League starts two seasons ago and 19 last term the tough tackling youngster has started just six top tier matches this season and is being chased by a number of Bundesliga sides as well as Serie A sides Genoa and Juventus. Arsene Wenger will consider offers for the Sao Paulo born battler and the player himself may be keen on a new challenge.

Though Sebastien Squillaci only arrived last summer the former Sevilla man is also in danger of being sold after a very mixed season that has seen the French international make elementary errors and could be axed if Wenger manages to bring in a new centre back with the likes of Gary Cahill and Serdar Tasci being high up on his list of potential signings.

Finally it appears that the Arsenal boss will look to field offers for Danish international Nicklas Bendtner who had something of a run-in with Wenger earlier in the season when the big striker made it clear he was not happy at his lack of first team opportunities and there appears to be a great deal of interest from the continent in the 23 year old forward. It is thought that Mexican international Carlos Vela could avoid being included in the cull thanks to his energetic and effective displays on loan at West Brom.

Wenger it seems does not have as much in the way of a transfer budget as some would imagine but the clear-out is not only being put into operation to balance the books but also being enacted to help usher in a new era of success at the North London club.

Match Preview: Liverpool FC vs Stoke City (feat. Transfer roundup)

Preview

The Potters travel to Liverpool tonight in search of their first ever top flight win at Anfield (no reputation to uphold at least). With the January transfer window closing, the last few days have been tinged with disappointment for both teams.

Stoke are currently negotiating a tough run of away fixtures (five out of six games) due to postponements and the FA Cup. This week would have been perfect timing to give the squad a timely boost by bringing in some fresh faces but Pulis has chosen to sell rather than buy, with both Tuncay and Eidur Gudjohnson being shown the door. Tuncay was never the be all and end all, but he was undoubtedly one of the more skilful players in the team. The most galling thing is you automatically assume that 5.5mil for a player would guarantee a place in the starting line-up. Fans have described him a square peg in a round hole and that’s a notion I to would subscribe to. There was no place within our formation for a man more focused on his own individualism than his position within the team. It might seem like a prehistoric view but it’s one a lot of Stoke and Middlesbrough fans would concur with and I think 4M from Wolfsburg is the best return we could have hoped for in the circumstances.  I hope Fulham play Gudjohnson simply so us Stoke fans can formulate our own opinions on his ongoing ‘lack of match fitness’. The players regularly spoke highly of him, Rory Delap going as far to call him the most technically gifted player in the squad (although what Rory defines as technically gifted is up for debate).

And despite writing a premature obituary for him, Ricardo Fuller is to stay at the club but I highly doubt with the improved pay packet he was searching for. Ric finds himself most definitely in his twilight years now and in all honesty, I’m still expecting a retirement announcement or a lucrative move to the States (and closer to home) to come within the next few months.  So as the dust settles, the general mood on the fans forums is one of disappointment that we didn’t strengthen our squad further, particular in the area of central midfield. While the majority are happy to have Pennant on board permanently, John Carew’s is being greeted unsurprisingly with a mixed reception. I’ve seen little to be impressed with from the Norwegian this season but I wait patiently for him to change my mind.

Much has changed at Liverpool since their woeful performance at the Britannia stadium several months back. With Stoke running out worthy 2-0 winners, critics tore into the Reds and their poor form away from Anfield, the performance highlighting all the shortcomings that had derailed their title challenge before it even got going. As everyone in the known galaxy is now aware, King Kenny has taken over from the beleaguered Roy Hodgson and there’s no doubt Dalglish has made an impact. Despite his godlike status on Merseyside, there was little pressure on his shoulders and no one was expecting miracles from a man out of management for a decade). But it seems familiarity has facilitated calm in the Liverpool camp and they’ve now taken seven points from the last nine.

Despite the upturn in fortunes, it couldn’t prevent star striker Fernando Torres looking for a new trough. However his departure is not the tragedy some fans are labelling it as. Liverpool are not solely reliant on his goals as suggested and you only have to look at the strikers body language over the last few months to suggest he wanted away. Assessing their latest recruits, Luis Suarez has been a player I’ve admired for a long time and a proven goalscorer (and shot-stopper) for Ajax and Uruguay. However it’s difficult to make an immediate judgement on how players from the Dutch League will respond to the step up in quality. Ajax and PSV have been feeder clubs to the PL and La Liga for a long time and have produced some sensational players (Van Nistelrooy) as well as individuals who flattered to deceive (Huntelaar). I genuinely hope he becomes a Kop favourite (although hopefully that process will begin sometime after this game!).  Their other marquee signing represents a massive risk based solely on his overinflated price tag of 35M. When settled, Newcastle’s Andy Carroll will be a excellent asset to the club and will help him massively in his burgeoning international career. However, given his age, temperament and overall inexperience at PL level, I wouldn’t have offered anything over 12M and I guarantee the majority of Liverpool fans will agree with that judgement.

Teams

Very difficult to call a starting eleven for this fixture and I think at least a couple of players may be rested. I’ve a sneaking suspicion Tommy Sorenson might be retained for the game following his penalty heroics against Wolves. With Ryan Shawcross still out suspended, expect Abdoulaye Faye to partner Rob Huth in defence after his proposed move to Celtic fell through. Kenwyne Jones will be recalled to partner either Carew or Fuller up front and Dean Whitehead and Marc Wilson may both be drafted back into the lineup after being omitted on Saturday. Pennant, who’s been mysteriously absent from the first team in recent weeks, may be called upon in order to rest Delap for the weekend.

Having exited the FA Cup, expect a pretty much full strength team from Liverpool. Carroll won’t be making his debut after failing to shake off a bar stool related thigh injury while veteran Jamie Carragher could also miss out with a shoulder injury. Other than that, expect the usual faces of Gerrard, Maxi Rodriguez, Raul Meireles and Dirk Kuyt to line up behind a spritely Uruguayan ready to face his first Anfield crowd.

One To Watch

Steven Gerrard: All eyes will be on debutant Suarez but the talismanic Gerrard will always be the one to watch in this Liverpool side, particular with Torres now out the picture

Prediction

It would be great to grab any sort of result at Anfield but I just can’t see it happening. Liverpool are hitting peak form and Pulis will undoubtedly be putting more emphasis on Saturdays home tie with Sunderland. 2-0 loss.

Milan sign Juventus reject; Magath reveals shock transfer close to fruition

Milan sign Juventus reject

Milan have announced the signing of defender Nicola Legrottaglie on their official website.

The 34-year-old was given permission to leave after Juventus signed Andrea Barzagli as a cover for Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

The defender who was mostly used as a fringe player at Juventus has completed his medical at Milan before signing a six-month contract with the Rossoneri.

He has thus become Milan’s fifth signing of the transfer window, albeit a controversial one, after Antonio Cassano, Urby Emanuelson, Mark van Bommel and Didac Villa had arrived at San Siro.

Even if the former Italy international is likely to be used as a back-up player at San Siro, the Rossoneri fans will not be too happy with the signing of Juventus reject.

Magath reveals shock transfer close to fruition

Schalke boss Felix Magath has confirmed the club are set to sign former Bayern midfielder Ali Karimi.

Magath, who coached Karimi at Bayern, believes the Iran international will add much needed creativity to the squad.

“Ali Karimi is on the verge of signing for Schalke. It’s just a matter of wrapping up some formalities,” Magath told Kicker.

“We have some problems to get the ball from midfield to attack at the moment. Karimi could really help us with that.”

Karimi is expected to sign a six-month deal at Veltins Arena subject to passing a medical.

Ali Karimi can be seen as a controversial signing for Schalke seeing that he failed to prove his potential while at Bayern and that he is now 32 years old, but it appears that Felix Magath is ready to take a gamble with him.

Bolton closing in on Chelsea forward

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge is on the verge of completing a loan deal to Bolton.

The 21-year-old striker has undergone a medical at Reebok Stadium and he is expected to be in the squad to face Wolves on Wednesday.

Despite showing massive potential this season, the young striker hasn’t started a single Premiership game this season, although he did score a couple of goals in the Cup competitions.

With Drogba, Anelka and Kalou in the side, Carlo Ancelotti decided to allow Sturridge to join Bolton in his search for first team football.

Sturridge is expected to provide cover for Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies, although he should get much more playing time than at Chelsea.

This move could benefit all three sides with Sturridge set to gain much needed first team experience at Reebok.

Busy last day of the transfer window

torres carrollWell, for our competition anyway. Not so much for us. At time of writing this, it appears that Chelsea have signed Fernando Torres for something in the neighborhood of £50m.

As a replacement, Liverpool have agreed to pay Newcastle £35m for Andy Carroll.

Surprisingly, City have stayed relatively quiet after their early capture of Dzeko and haven’t jumped back into the market.

Liverpool look to instantly be better with a front pairing of Suarez and Carroll (pending a physical and the sale of Torres) over the unhappy Torres + whoever else. There’s no doubting the Spaniard’s talent or clinical finishing in the box. But why keep a player who would only spend his time on the pitch being unhappy and uncommitted to your cause?

Chelsea with Torres, Drogba and Anelka will make up one of the scariest and most lethal frontlines out there. Wonder how Balotelli will rates that trio versus the City trinity.

I expect Spurs to pull off a last ditch transfer seconds before the deadline, then wait to see if the proper paperwork gets approved by the league. That would mean all of our rivals (with the exception of Arsenal) have strengthened their squad considerably heading into the second half of the season.

As for us, our “flurry” of activity on the final day of the window has been the sale of Cameron Stewart to Hull (loan move being made permanent) and Cleverly being allowed to stay at Wigan till the end of the season. Not exactly the stuff that would strike fear at the Bridge, the Emirates or Anfield.

I guess there’s always the possibility of a last minute deal going through, but I’m not holding my breath for it.
