Campeonato Paulista wrap: Sao Paulo stay second, Corinthians slip up

Sao Paulo kept the pressure on Campeonato Paulista leaders Palmeiras with a 4-1 win away to Noroeste on Sunday.

Visitors Sao Paulo took the lead through a penalty from goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni 35 minutes into the match at Estadio Dr Alfredo de Castilho.

Midfielder Marlos doubled the lead on the hour mark, before forward Dagoberto made it 3-0 on 76 minutes.

Defender Halisson pulled one back for the hosts two minutes later, but substitute Ilsinho struck in the 90th minute to restore the three-goal advantage.

The win keeps Sao Paulo second, one point behind top-of-the-table Palmeiras.

Noroeste are one point from safety in 17th place.

Corinthians lost ground on the top two after going down 2-1 at home to Sao Caetano.

The mid-table visitors led through goals in each half from forward Eduardo, the first from the penalty spot just nine minutes in.

Paulinho got a goal back for the hosts on 80 minutes, but they were unable to take anything from the game.

The defeat sees Corinthians fall six points behind Palmeiras.

Sao Caetano are up to eighth.

In other matches, fourth-placed Santos also dropped points in a 0-0 draw away to Americana.

Linense defeated Bragantino 2-1 at home, while Oeste came from behind to beat visitors Ponte Preta by the same scoreline.

Campeonato Paulista wrap: Slender wins for Sao Paulo, Corinthians

Sao Paulo and Corinthians both recorded victories in Sunday’s Campeonato Paulista action, while Palmeiras dropped off the pace.

The trio of title contenders were all locked on 31 points heading into Sunday’s fixtures and it was Corinthians who remained on top of the league with a 1-0 home win against Americana.

Portuguese striker Liedson scored the game’s only goal to condemn Americana to their fifth straight defeat.

The forward has been in inspired form since signing from Sporting Lisbon and has now scored nine goals in eight matches for the club.

Sao Paulo remain behind Corinthians on goal difference after their 1-0 win away at Gremio Prudente.

Substitute Henrique scored just three minutes after coming off the bench to secure the victory.

Palmeiras, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by Sao Caetano.

Kleber put Palmeiras in front after just six minutes but any hopes of a routine victory were quashed when Artur found the back of the net half-an-hour later.

In Sunday’s other matches, Sao Bernardo FC won 2-0 at Linense courtesy of strikes from Junior Xuxa and an Andre Turatto, while Val’s 25th minute goal was enough to hand Mogi Mirim a 1-0 away win at Ituano.

Chelsea Snap Up Sao Paulo Starlet

By: Devin | March 15th, 2011
Tweet News just surfaced that we’ve entered into an agreement over the signing of Lucas Piazon from Sao Paulo. Link (albeit in Portuguese) after the jump:

Fresh recruits.

I haven’t necessarily tracked this kid, nor do I know much about his progress over the years. For those that are bilingual, have a go at the official article from the Sao Paulo website here.

The interwebs describes him as the ‘next Kaka’. So maybe this will finally put to bed the rumors that we’re about to sign the real Kaka. Otherwise, it seems that the boy has oodles of talent and needs a bigger platform to demonstrate his skills. The prospect of pairing him with Joshy in the midfield has my heart a flutter.

Here’s a YouTube compilation someone put together of the lad:

Luis Fabiano signs for Sao Paulo

7.6 million for his services.

The Brazilian club announced the deal on their official website, stating that they had been trying to sign Fabiano for over four months.

Fabiano will immediately leave for Sao Paulo, the club where he spent three years before moving to Europe.

The Brazil international was delighted to return to Sao Paulo.

“Money is not everything in life. Nothing makes me more happy than now when I am about to return to wear the shirt of the team that is closest to my heart.

“I owe everything I have to Sao Paulo and I will make sure that I work hard with this shirt on and I will try to score a lot of goals.”

Fabiano spent five and a half years at Sevilla, scoring 106 goals in the process and winning six trophies, but his career started taking the wrong turn and it was only a matter of time before he left the Rojiblancos.

Campeonato Paulista wrap: Keeper Ceni strikes for Sao Paulo

Veteran goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni was on target as Sao Paulo beat Portuguesa 3-2 in the Campeonato Paulista on Sunday.

Fernandinho opened the scoring for visitors Sao Paulo on 29 minutes at the Estadio Dr. Oswaldo Teixeira Duarte, before Ceni struck the 98th goal of his 19-year career six minutes before half-time from a free-kick outside the box.

Heverton pulled one back for the hosts three minutes before the hour mark, before Rhodolfo restored the two-goal cushion in the 75th minute.

Heverton was on target again four minutes from time, but Sao Paulo held out to record a win which keeps them four points behind leaders Palmeiras.

Elsewhere, Mirassol came from a goal down to beat Sao Caetano 3-1 at home.

The visitors went ahead through Ailton 29 minutes in, but Mirassol hit back to lead at half-time thanks to goals from Wellington Amorim and Diego Correa.

Sao Caetano were given a route back into the match when Esley was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 61st minute, but 10-man Mirassol put the result beyond doubt when Xuxa netted a third with seven minutes to go.

A first-half brace from Finazzi helped Bragantino beat Ituano 2-1, while Anselmo Ramon’s last-minute strike salvaged a 1-1 draw for Oeste at home to Mogi Mirim.

Paulista drew 0-0 at home to Corinthians, who finished the match a man down following Paulinho’s dismissal with four minutes to go.
