Carlo wins PL Manager of the Month

By: Jamie | May 5th, 2011
    Tweet

For the second month in a row, Carlo Ancelotti has been voted April’s Premier League Manager of the Month. But is the award cursed?

Carlo won for March as well after impressive wins against both sides of Manchester, and the award for April was for our wins that have helped us claw back towards the PL summit. Unfortunately, after he won last month, we went on to get a disappointing draw against Stoke to set us back again. Will the award mean we’ll be cursed again for the match this weekend? Let’s hope not. But congrats Carlo!

Arsenal Manager Claims Liverpool Are A Long Ball Team Like Sunderland

Rafa Benitez Set for Atletico Madrid Manager Post

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is set for a return to management with Atletico Madrid.
The Spaniard took Liverpool to two Champions League finals during his six years at the club, winning one of them, and was responsible for signing stars like Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso.
Current Atletico boss Quique Sanchez Flores is out of contract at the end of the season and has not been offered a new deal by the La Liga side leaving the door open for Benitez to make his return to management, according to Spanish paper AS.
The 50-year-old was sacked by Inter Milan in January after just eight months in charge and has been out of a job since.

SOURCE: talkSPORT

It would be a little bit surprising if Quique Sanchez Flores was not offered a new deal as the 46 year old manager is considered one of the best young boss’s in the business. Last term the former Benfica and Valencia boss led the Vicente Calderon side to a Europa League success as well as the Copa del Rey final in his first season in charge.

However after two successive top four finishes under former boss Javier Aguirre, Flores has presided over fairly average La Liga form. Clearly Rafa Benitez’s success in Spain can not be argued with, during his three years at Valencia he led the Mestalla club to two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup triumph.

Wenger: Less a manager, more a savant

By Shourin Roy on April 8, 2011 2:48 PM | Comments | TrackBacksShare|

Look to the future is Arsene Wenger's mantra once again. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater maybe another.

All said and done a stirring defense of this team's performance and a pointed reminder that a real team cannot be bought. It is a placation to the team's supporters increasingly disgruntled at the lack of urgency shown towards the only and most meaningful title left.

But in the midst of it is a sense of victimization. On two levels. The first, an "us" and "them" gulf that seems to separate the club from Man Utd and Barcelona. Thus, Arsenal did not lose to any other team, they lost to good ones. But that did not stop Wenger from trumpeting winning a quadruple before the FA Cup encounter or the Barca second leg. The context: United were at a low ebb beaten by Wolves, Chelsea, and Liverpool and we had the good fortune of carrying a goal advantage to Barcelona. Now how did we go from dishing it out to eating crow?

The second and most relevant level. These are criticisms leveled by "people who have not worked half a day in football." By that dint, not to be taken seriously but by golly are they tiresome. Now, this means armchair pundits like me - who've never put an ounce into the sport in any other capacity other than kick leather. But we've been Arsenal fans for years and we remember a Wenger era when his teams looked and did beat the crap out of anyone and everyone. "Fragile" is not how one characterized players like Adams, Keown, Bould, Parlour, Vieira, and Petit.

" People's opinion is people's opinion and we have to accept that in our game," he said. "As long as you are second in the league, I am ready to sign for the next 20 years and stand up for that."

These are mere bumps on the road. In fact, if you read right Wenger seems to be saying it is alright to come second every time in a world gone mad on the football machine that believes buying their way to a title is the only way. I wish sometimes Wenger, with all my heart would give up his football job and become SEC chairman or the US Treasury Secretary. We suffer because as supporters of a club we only understand the straight and narrow, whereas, Wenger's real purpose is to save the world we inhabit. It is a transformation he thinks will only be appreciated through time. Patience, my friend! I've heard it is a virtue.

Liverpool Manager Heaps Praise On Players For Season Turnaround

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has praised his players for the way they have turned this season into a success.

The Reds endured their worst start to a Premier League ever under Roy Hodgson, who failed to inspire the squad after many off-field problems.

Dalglish took over in January after Hodgson was sacked, and has seen the team climb to sixth and chasing Tottenham Hotspur for a Europa League spot.

Dalglish says this is still the objective and admits his players are better than how they performed under Hodgson.

“I still don’t think sixth place is the position we actually want to be in,” he told the club’s website.

“But credit to the players because there have only been two transfers out and two in, and the lads that have got us to where we are deserve great credit for it.

“I don’t think they could have done much more. I think they’ve done more than they possibly could.

“We’ve won some games maybe people thought we couldn’t win and we’ve lost other games we thought we should win.

“But at the end of the day, as we keep saying, we will add up the points at the end of the season and see where we are.

“If we were to finish sixth it would be an achievement for the players that they have got that far in such a short space of time but we just need to keep going and see what happens.”

Liverpool Manager Defends Bad Boy Andy Carroll

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish had dismissed suggestions striker Andy Carroll has to control his drinking habits.

England boss Fabio Capello this week warned the 22-year-old to cut out the booze if he wants to make it to the top.

But Dalglish laughed off the suggestion and even commended the former Newcastle hit-man for the way he has conducted himself since arriving at Anfield.

“Well he’s never bought me a drink,” said Dalglish. “I’ve been with him at Boyzone concerts and he’s still never bought me a drink!

“Andy Carroll knows what is required of Andy Carroll, and he’s done fantastically well getting back to where he has, with his application and dedication.

“Whatever Andy has done, he has done it very well, and somebody else’s opinion is up to them.

“But he cannot be criticised in any way, shape or form for what he has done since he has been here.

“He’s done really well to get where he is, so I think Andy is focused on his football.”

I Am Not A Racist Says Sunderland Manager

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has angrily defended himself over allegations from defender Marcos Angeleri that he is a racist.

The 27-year-old refused to return from international duty with Argentina and accused Bruce of overlooking him because he is not English.

Arsenal Manager Tempted By Swoop For Tottenham Defender

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is contemplating a sensational summer swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to be offered a new deal because of his poor injury record.

But this will not put off the Gunners boss, who is looking for an experienced defender to be used as back-up in his squad.

The Frenchman believes Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou are good enough defenders to win Arsenal the Premier League for the first time in seven years.

But injury concerns over Djourou and Vermaelen highlights the issue of only having Sebastian Squillaci as cover.

Wenger sees Woodgate as the perfect back-up. Wenger was even interested in buying the former Real Madrid player when he joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough. Arsenal were linked with a move for the centre back by Sky Sports in January and it appears there is still a great deal of interest in the former England international.

Woodgate will be offered a one-year rolling contract according to our sources and Wenger will be keeping an eye on the centre-back to see if he is worth taking a risk on.

Over the years several defenders have switched allegiances in North London. Sol Campbell left Tottenham for Arsenal in 2001, while William Gallas did the opposite last summer.

No Rush To Decide Goalkeeping Position Says Arsenal Manager

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will decide who will go in goal only just before the next Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers on April 2.

The 61-year-old will choose between Manuel Almunia and recently re-signed Jens Lehmann.

Almunia was dropped from the team early in the season after a number of high-profile errors. But has been recalled following injuries to Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny.

Lehmann was signed as emergency cover for the injury crisis but following another error from Almunia against West Bromwich Albion, the German may be called into action.

The 41-year-old left Arsenal in 2008 following five successful seasons in North London and even retired last year.

Wenger did say a number of factors will be looked at when deciding his number one but does not say who will be his choice.

“What can you say? The player knows it was the wrong decision,” Wenger told the club’s website when asked about Almunia’s mistake against the Baggies.

“In big games, it hurts because that was a massive game for us and it hurts him of course.”

On whether he would now make a change, Wenger stressed: “I do not want to make a public debate of that.

“I believe for every game you consider three days before the game who will play in the next match.”

Rio Ferdinand Refused To Meet Me Says England Manager

Bayern Munich Appoint Jupp Heynckes As Manager On Two-Year Deal

Bayern Munich have appointed Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes as their new manager.

The 65-year-old will return for his third spell at the Bundesliga club on July 1 after signing a two-year contract.

He replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaal whose contract will be terminated at the end of the season.

Heynckes first led Bayern between 1987 and 1991, winning two Bundesliga titles, before moving to coach Real Madrid among others.

In 2009 he returned for five games to steer the club into the Champions League after the sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann.

Currently he was won plaudits for turning around the fortunes of Leverkusen, who are in second and on course for the Champions League.

He was always the preferred choice of Bayern’s board but did fight off Fulham manager Mark Hughes for the job.

Heynckes is obviously delighted with his return to the Allianz Arena.

“Aside from the good personal relationships I have with the leading figures at Bayern, the club has always impressed me with its professionalism,” he said.

“I have twice been Bayern coach and always appreciated the working environment.

“It’s natural that you have to have success as Bayern coach, I understand that but I see it as a fascinating task to achieve it with the team over the next two seasons.”

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Jupp Heynckes was our preferred candidate. We are very happy that we could reach agreement on a two-year contract.

“I’m convinced that with Jupp Heynckes we will have a successful collaboration. ”

A-League loses longest-serving manager

Australia’s A-League has been rocked by the exit of Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick on Saturday.

Merrick’s six-year tenure at the Victory was confirmed at a press conference which the dual premiership coach did not attend.

It was left to club chairman Anthony Di Pietro and managing director Richard Wilson to make the announcement.

“The board of Melbourne Victory can announce head coach Ernie Merrick and the club have agreed to part ways,” Di Pietro said.

“This decision has been reached after an extensive board review of all parts of the business. We determined the best way forward was to part ways and Melbourne Victory are to undertake a new coaching direction.”

“Ernie’s been obviously a very successful coach and we are appreciative of this, however, we’ve mutually agreed it is time to part ways.”

Merrick, who led the Victory to titles in 2006-07 and 2008-09, was the longest serving A-League manager and had one year left on his contract.

Di Pietro denied Merrick had been axed and refused to go into detail about the agreement reached between the two parties, before explaining that the change in manager was important in the new direction of the football club.

“There’s been no sacking here. The details of the discussion remain confidential. Ernie and ourselves left on amicable teams,” he said.

“We are undergoing some very important changes at our football club. We have a new leadership and a clear vision moving forward.”

Di Pietro said the club was disappointed with the recent A-League season, where the Victory were knocked out of the finals in the first round by Gold Coast and their AFC Champions League campaign started disastrously with a 5-1 loss to Gamba Osaka in Japan.

“Our club sets extremely high standards and we’re disappointed by the results in this A-League season along with the start to our AFC Champions League campaign,” he said.

“Our intent is to continue to be the benchmark club in the A-League and be successful in Asia and believe this decision will assist us in taking us to that level.”

The club’s youth team coach Mehmet Durakovic will take care of first-team duties as caretaker manager and will deputise during Tuesday’s home AFC Champions League encounter against Jeju United at AAMI Park.

As far as a permanent replacement goes, Di Pietro said the search had not begun and was reserved when quizzed if out-of-contract Queensland Roar boss Ange Postecoglou could make the move back to Melbourne to be with his family and take charge of the Victory.

“As far as Ange is concerned, we wish him well tomorrow, (for the Grand Final) but we haven’t commenced the search yet,” Di Pietro said.

Say the Right Thing: The Manager

By: Noel | March 8th, 2011
    Tweet heyyyyyyy

As we continue to wind down from the heady highs of United victory and Suarez dominance, we turn back to the manager and his way with words. To the surprise of no one, he’s gone and said the right things again, which might eventually start to get dull if it wasn’t for the at times knowing way he often plays with his questioners. Though this time around it was more about the warm glow of victory than light verbal sparing, after a dominant display like Sunday’s it only seems right to look back from all the angles available, and if in the wake of a match that put the icing on the cake of his extended sixtieth birthday celebration one of those angles just happens to come via the words of a Liverpool legend who seems to have given the club and players a new lease on life, well, who am I to ignore it?

Heck, it’s almost enough to make one forget the days when managers gave weekly verdicts rather than hailing this, that, or the other. Though of course part of forgetting those days of managerial verdicts might have more than a little something to do with what we’re seeing on the pitch. And a lot of that has to do with the performance of the entire team, not just one or two players–no matter how great Luis Suarez was or how important Dirk Kuyt’s first hattrick for the club–a point Dalglish got at when he was pressed to heap all the praise on just one or two players:

Well everybody who supports Liverpool has had a great day and it owes to the performance of the players.

I thought the way they went about their job, their attitude, their commitment, their desire to get a result, the pride they took in playing for the football club and the pride they took in themselves in their own performance were the reasons they got the result.

Without everybody giving everything they’ve got, you don’t beat Manchester United–they did that. It’s great credit to them that they did and played so well.

One thing that always seems to come up in his interviews is that fierce pride in the club, as when on first being appointed he talked of owing a debt to Liverpool and its supporters in spite of everything he’d already done over the decades. You see that same sot of dichotomy at play when he puts all the credit for the success on the players, but also insists that it is their commitment not only to themselves but also to the club–to things other than themselves–that provides the building blocks for that success to meaningfully exist in the first place. He also, as with any good manager, seeks to spread the praise around when there’s reason for it, and to shoulder the bulk of the blame when there isn’t. Obviously against United there were plenty of people on the pitch to praise beyond the obvious, from a defensively dedicated Gerrard to Johnson at leftback, Carragher pushed out onto the right to Lucas keeping things ticking over in midfield, Reina solid again after a shaky week to Maxi looking useful again after a long absence. Suarez in particular shone, and that was down to his skill and determination and sheer individual quality, but it also owed to the foundation of a solid team performance without which his exploits could not have existed to take plaudits.

Still, one glorious afternoon combined with a starring turn or two doesn’t make everything right in Liverpool’s world, and it doesn’t get the club back to where they want to be:

The closer you get the top, the more difficult it is to close the gap. If you move from 20th to sixth, it’s not as big a problem as moving from second to first. The higher you go, the more difficult the step up is.

The owners are determined to move the club forward within reason, and whatever that’s going to be they’ll do their best to provide it. But the players that played today did not do themselves any harm whatsoever of being part of the club going forward.

For all that Liverpool has looked much better on the whole under Dalglish, there have still been inconsistencies and hiccups. West Ham was an obvious one, though in the aftermath of United it’s easy to forget that that tough loss was a few weeks in the making, coming as it did at the end of a string of underwhelming performances. When you look at the table, too, the gap between the top five clubs this season and Liverpool as the leader of a pack from six back into double digits is stark, and it speaks to the unfortunate reality of a run at fourth being next to impossible right now. The outing against United was impressive, as was the earlier one against Chelsea, but even if on present form under Dalglish the club would be on pace to net 72 points and a Champions League berth over the length of a season, Liverpool isn’t really where it wants to be. And while they might be heading in the right direction, that last step is a hard one, as the club found out back in the 2009 season.

It’s hard not to get a little smile, too, from the way he manages to fit “within reason” in when he talks about getting back to the top. The net spend may not have amounted to much in January, but with a handful of attempted deals falling through at the end and the club scrambling with the Torres situation there was regardless an obvious determination to spend and improve, no matter what the pounds and cents added up to when the dust settled. Still, he seems to remind everybody, Liverpool aren’t City or Chelsea, and moreover most supporters have never wanted them to be. The club will spend, but it won’t be foolish, and many of the players here now will have to do their parts along with the coaches and all the rest to get Liverpool back where it belongs.

It’s hard not to imagine they might have it in them to do it, too, after a display like Sunday’s. But it’s a hard final step, and maybe even a hard couple of steps from where they are now, and the warmth of United cannot obscure the fact that there’s still work to be done and that Liverpool won’t be off spending Real Madrid money on players in the summer to try and magically make it all right.

No mater the case for the future, seeing as Kenny Dalglish does always seem to say the right thing in the here and now, and seeing as everything over the past few days has managed to revolve itself around his never-ending birthday, I suppose I should probably put an end to my ramblings and just let him have the final say on the matter:

I don’t know how long this birthday is going to last–I’ll be 70 by the time it finishes!

The fans have always been fantastic supporters to myself and my whole family. It was a bit emotional when they started singing it–I don’t think they would have sang it if we had been losing, and I wouldn’t have wanted to have heard it if we were, but as I said the day went really well for us. The fact it was my birthday, well every day is my birthday when I go into Melwood.

FUCKING LEGENDTeddyhe oozes love for the club, and he is one of those "approachable" legends. i feel like if i accidentally met him at a bar and told him i was a fan, he would buy me a beer.Smitty_wWell said your self Noel, but i need a laugh any chance off you catching up with Roy for a cuppa ?NoelI suppose that was one thing: the better the football gets, the harder it is to get a laugh out of it all. But then again, you also get better football out of the deal. Which is kind of nice.bronever mind kenny getting emotional that gave me a tear in my eye when the kop sang that. just makes you relise even more were not a place were you go and eat hot dogs (rafa). we are the most conected club in the worldYann"...well every day is my birthday when I go into Melwood"

What an amazing, humble legend he is. There you have a love for LFC from a winner which can fuel our resurgence back to the top of Europe. Thank heavens the Hodg screwed up in such a monumental way (rather than just being average) and that it became untenable to keep him on till season's end. Without knowing it, Woy has done us the greatest favour.redtrev73Nice take on the result of The Hodge's lamentable tenure, mate. I can see you're a man whose glass is half-full!! Couldn't agree more re. The King's inspirational humility and grace....'though i did get a kick out of his no-nonsense attitude with sky post-match. You are never in any doubt that, for all his warmth and affability, Kenny is a man you don't fuck with. Equal parts Shankly and Paisley, a formidable gentleman.YannSpot on redtrev. Dalglish is no puppet and couldn't give a rat's tossbag about providing the media with juicy titbits to leading questions. Lets not forget, as I'm sure Kenny hasn't, that the media was brutal with him in his previous managerial stint and gave him all manner of grief on top of everything else he had to deal with. He doesn't engage with them, and he's right, because as they say, when you argue with an idiot no-one can tell the difference.blog comments powered by Disqus
