Coyle tips Sturridge for England

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has urged Daniel Sturridge to continue his rich vein of form on his way to breaking into the England squad.

Sturridge scored his seventh goal in nine games for Bolton as Coyle’s men beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, effectively ending Arsene Wenger’s title hopes.

The striker has enjoyed an impressive run of form since joining Bolton on loan from Chelsea and is likely to retain his place for the trip to Fulham on Wednesday, although he will need to pass a late fitness test as he has a slight ankle knock.

And Coyle hopes his forward can continue where he left off against Arsenal, as well as making Fabio Capello take notice of him.

“It is Daniel’s incentive for the rest of the season,” Coyle said.

“He has it in his locker to go down that route – the same way Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has.”

“I said a year ago, while he was on loan here, that Jack should have gone to the World Cup. People thought I was talking rubbish but look at what has happened since.”

“It is the same with Daniel. There is no shame in him being a loan player and no reason why Mr Capello can’t pick him for the full team. He has got the same ingredients as Jack.”

“If you look at his form since he came here he is as good as anyone around.”

“If he had the chance to show that form for Chelsea, I would suggest he would be playing for them, too.”

“Daniel is not just a goalscorer, he has so much about him. He is different to what England have got. He is quick, can take a man on, can go right or left and he can score.”

“Fabio Capello is looking to build a young, progressive and ambitious team and Daniel has got to have a chance to be part of it. I keep going back to what has happened to Jack – and Daniel can make the same progress.”

Coyle has no major injury worries ahead of the trip to Craven Cottage and is likely to name an unchanged side following the win over Arsenal.

Coyle unfazed by injury plague

Bolton manager Owen Coyle is not fazed by the club’s mounting injury problems as he looks to end the season in a Europa League spot.

Coyle will be missing a host of first team regulars when he takes his seventh-placed side to Birmingham at the weekend, with Mark Davis, Sam Ricketts and Stuart Holden all on the sidelines.

However the 44-year-old Scot believes possible replacements Fabrice Muamba and Tamir Cohen can use this opportunity to stake a claim for a permanent place in the starting line-up.

“We’ve shown before when we’ve picked up serious injuries that the lads can cope with it,” said Coyle

“What it does is allow somebody to step into the fray and show their quality.”

Midfielder Holden’s absence, with cruciate ligament damage, is arguably Bolton’s biggest blow and he has only returned to club action this season after a long spell out with a broken leg.

However Coyle is confident the 25-year-old will come back stronger from the setback which has ruled him out for six months.

“Stuart is obviously disappointed by what has happened to him, and what happened to him last year when he had a broken leg.”

“He managed to bounce back at the very end of the season to go to the World Cup so he knows how difficult it can be when you’re injured.”

“But he has such a positive mindset and we encourage him in that to make sure, when he comes back, he comes back bigger and better. He did that the last time and he will again.”

“He’s set for a glittering career, so, as disappointing as it is for him now, I’ve told him he’s got to look at the bigger picture and know he’s got so much to look forward to.”

Coyle had better news this week in the shape of Gary Cahill, who shone on his first senior start for England in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Ghana, and his manager is sure it will not be his last.

“People have said he looked like a top player, that’s because he is a top player,” Coyle continued.

“What England need are players at the back to pass the ball out to them, and there will be none better at that than Gary Cahill, because he’s so comfortable on the ball.”

Expect Coyle to Target Carrick

By: Ivor | March 18th, 2011

Michael-Carrick-007-1Not half daft is Michael Carrick. Usually he’s pretty averse to chitchatting with the press, but he’s gone out of this way this week to tell the corps of usual suspects that he doesn’t fancy “any of that” vis-à-vis playing centre-back again. ‘That’’ last time–December 9, 2009– meant going mano -a -mano, toe-to-toe against Brede Hangeland, Aaron Hughes and Bobby Zamora of Fulham. Fulham are always a handful for us, but Carrick, all too often the salami in a savage Hangeland/Zamora sandwich, had the look of a man condemned to an eternal ride on a roller coaster throughout the match. Missing Vidic, Ferdinand and Evans, the Gaffer threw Carrick into the cauldron next to the slighter, but more combative Scot, Darren Fletcher. The Gaffer clearly didn’t have much choice on that occasion.

Having publicly announced his complete lack of bottle(as if it might have escaped dumb old Us) like one more show business gossip column attention junkie coming out of the closet seems pretty shabby behavior to me. All the more so because Sir Alex Ferguson could be without 11 players after John O’Shea and his replacement Rafael Da Silva limped off with hamstring problems during Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Olympique Marseille.

Every game is crucial now, and, on the eve of the match against Bolton Wanderers, Ferguson has to do without without goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, five defenders – with Rafael and O’Shea joining Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans on the sidelines – four midfielders – Anderson, Hargreaves, Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park, and, finally, striker Michael Owen. With Wes Brown so shaky against Liverpool and O.M., the Gaffer has a dilemma. Up against a very savvy opponent in Bolton manager Owen Coyle, how will he reshuffle his deck this time?

article-1366740-0B30CEF500000578-309_306x403Coyle will surely pick his savviest player, Kevin Davies, to lead the attack and accompany him up front with either the in-form Daniel Sturridge or the poor man’s Dimitar Berbatov, Johan Elmander. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see all three on the field at the beginning of the match, especially if Evans isn’t fit. Again, if Evans is even close to fit, Ferguson will surely put him out there next to Smalling. If this is the case, however, I would expect Wes Brown to be in there at right back instead of Fabio, so that he and Evra can make the tactical and positioning choices for the two young stoppers.

The key to United’s performance is surely how they adept to Davies’ ‘gamesmanship.’
Nobody throws an elbow or grabs a shirt during free kicks and corners as well as Davies. Putting Berbatov on Davies in those situations much as he did against Roque De Santa Cruz at Blackburn would help also. Indeed, partially using the Bulgarian as an auxiliary centre-back might be just the ticket.

In midfield, Fergie will surely start Valencia for the first time. Nani clearly needs a rest. and the Ecuadorian winger’s pinpoint passing is exactly what Rooney’s been missing for months. Playing both of them might not be a bad idea, either, as Bolton’s full-backs are weak and vulnerable. Such crossing dexterity will surely be difficult to deal with for Bolton’s slow back line of Wheater, Cahill and Steinsson.  A lot will depend on how Bolton’s adaptable midfield, probably featuring Stuart Holden, Mark Davies, Martin Petrov, and the constantly improving Fabrice Muamba, do against Fletcher, Carrick and Gibson. I would expect the painfully slow Gibson to take over Carrick’s deeper role and for Carrick and Fletcher to concentrate on taking the ball away from the hard tackling but error-prone Mark Davies. Above all, Muamba, who has become a more consistent goal-scoring threat under the stewardship of Coyle, needs to be watched carefully.

Keeping possession is key. Coyle may be tempted to play five across the middle but that would surely leave his weak full backs, Robinson and probably Steinsson, vulnerable to any one of Valencia, Nani, Park or Giggs. Owen Coyle has definitely done a Dr. Frankenstein-style reanimation job on what is definitely, at least on paper, a very ordinary Bolton side. Still, although they keep the ball very well and work it to Petrov and Elmander on the wings or to Muamba springing loose from the middle, everything builds predictably. If no one feeds Sturridge and/or Davies they will starve. Getting in behind United’s makeshift defense is key for Coyle and I expect Wanderers players to go after Carrick–no matter what position he plays–in shifts. A lot may depend on the referee André Marriner and how generous he feels on the day toward the naughty Davies boys!.

I expect a really great game tomorrow. The Gaffer will surely use all of his powers to reboot the almost unfathomable psyche of Dimitar Berbatov and at least temporarily put aside his reservations about Michael Carrick. If we can grab an early lead I expect a big victory.

Coyle hails Bolton spirit

Bolton boss Owen Coyle paid tribute to his side’s fighting qualities after they scored a thrilling 3-2 FA Cup quarter-final win over Birmingham.

Substitute Lee Chung-Yong headed home a late winner at St Andrew’s on Saturday, after Birmingham had twice fought back from a goal down.

Johan Elmander slotted home a cool left-foot shot past Ben Foster after 20 minutes, but Birmingham hit back through Cameron Jerome.

Kevin Davies then put the visitors ahead until Kevin Phillips produced a superb long-range strike to level proceedings once more. But Lee’s late heroics secured Bolton’s first berth in the semi-finals of the FA Cup since 2000.

Coyle said he was delighted with the never-say-die attitude of his men.

“Both teams went all out to book their place in the semi-final and we showed great character and determination to claim the victory,” he said.

“We have to give great credit to Birmingham because they kept coming back. ”

“Having got 2-1 in front, we should have scored a third with the chances that we created, but then you get Kevin Phillips doing what he does best by magnificently converting what seemed like a half-chance.”

“However, we picked ourselves up to get the winning goal. It was a great knock-down by the skipper (Kevin Davies) and a super finish by Chung-Yong.”

“It would have been very harsh not to have won it at the first attempt. We showed a lot of quality and endeavour, and at times we had to stand up and be counted, but each and every one of our players did that.”

“It was an example of the great spirit and resolve that underlines how we play and our approach to every single game.”

“All in all it’s a great day’s work and we are delighted to be in the semi-finals.”

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was disappointed by the loss, but said it would mean his men – who won the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Wembley in February – could now devote their full attention to staying in the English Premier League.

With nine games still to play, Birmingham are fourth from the bottom, with only goal difference separating them from the relegation zone – something McLeish is keen to amend.

“We’re now concentrating on getting further up the league,” McLeish said.

“I don’t feel as bad as I did last week after the West Brom game (a 3-1 league loss at home) but at the same time it hurts me to lose any football match.”

“You could see from that performance that the players were trying to make history a second time and get to Wembley again.”

“It wasn’t to be, it was a tough Bolton side. They had just about their best team so that was a magnificent effort by our lads.”

Are you suspicious of Bolton’s rather incredible start to the Premier League season? Do you think the run of good performances is in some way down to the fact that Owen Coyle may well have sold his soul to the devil? Watch as the Reebok manager goes through a very weird routine before Sunday’s match against Blackburn Rovers. Thanks to 101 Great Goals for the find.
