Arsenal Likely to Complete Signing of Dutch International Who Confirms He Wants Gunners Move
Arsenal face competition from Juventus for Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Tuttosport says Juve are ready to cash in on Gigi Buffon to fund their own transfer plans this summer.
A host of keepers are now under consideration as Buffon’s replacement, including Salvatore Sirigu (Palermo), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari) and Stekelenburg.
But the Dutchman revealed to Tuttosport: “If an offer from Arsenal arrives, I will leave.”
SOURCE: Yahoo Eurosport
Well if indeed that quote is accurate, and it is all over the web, then surely that is a pretty damn good indication that the Ajax man wants to move to the Emirates, a move that will surely go some way to helping the North London club from resolving their keeper crisis.
Manuel Almunia was of course the first choice keeper at the Emirates when the season began but a succession of clangers led to the Spaniard being dropped and replaced by the improved, but still inconsistent, Polish international Lukasz Fabianski until he fell foul to injury. Then in came youngster Wojciech Szczesny who looked decent but then made huge errors before also getting injured. Fourth choice keeper Vito Mannone is out on loan and also sidelined.
Arsene Wenger has therefore set his sights on bringing in a keeper and the likes of Mark Schwarzer and Pepe Reina have been mentioned heavily over the past year but news that Dutch international Maarten Stekelenburg is interested in a move to the Gunners will surely lead to 28 year old becoming the favourite to become the next number one keeper at the Emirates Stadium.

£15m Rated Brazilian Playmaker Wants Liverpool Move
Wolfsburg midfielder Diego is thrilled by the interest of Liverpool.
Liverpool have been linked with the Brazilian, who only moved to struggling Wolfsburg in August from Juventus.
Diego has been watched by Reds football chief Damien Comolli and is aware of the rumours linking him with a move to Anfield.
“I am honored that such a club has set their eyes on me,” said Diego.
“They are one of the most prestigious teams in the world. Playing for them would be an honour.”
SOURCE: Tribalfootball
26 year old Brazilian playmaker Diego has had something of a bumpy first season at Wolfsburg, having been pretty inconsistent at times, to angering former boss Steve McClaren by missing a penalty he wasn’t supposed to take and reportedly generally falling out with all and sundry. I am therefore not surprised he would be keen on a move to Liverpool.
Given also that Wolfsburg may get relegated it seems even likely the former Werder Bremen and Juventus man would be pushing for a move away from the Volkswagen run club. Could Kenny Dalglish use the flair player though?
Liverpool have seen the likes of Lucas and Raul Meireles really up their game and one would imagine that Steven Gerrard would also be that touch of added creativity so how would Diego fit in at the Merseyside club, a club that is happy to allow talented Italian international Alberto Aquilani leave for Juventus.
Clearly Diego is a good player but perhaps his signing would be little more than a luxury back up that the club could do without, not least if, as speculated, he can be a dressing room disruption.

Reja wants Lazio to bounce back
Lazio’s Edy Reja will be looking for a reaction from his players after they suffered a disappointing defeat at Cagliari in their last match.
One of the early front-runners in the first half of the Serie A season, Lazio have struggled for consistency so far in 2011.
They had been unbeaten in five matches since January 29 before coming unstuck in a 1-0 loss at Cagliari’s Stadio Sant’Elia on February 27.
Reja’s men now have the opportunity to bounce back immediately in a home match against eighth-placed Palermo on Sunday.
“After the defeat against Cagliari, of course we have the willingness to react, therefore we should take advantage of the home match against Palermo,” Reja said.
“We should take into consideration that Palermo has 40 points and has proved to have very good and skilled players.”
“They have a good attitude from this point of view and we’re aware of this. Therefore we should be able to play an intense and focused match.”
Reja dismissed the suggestion that he may tinker with Lazio’s formation in search of the win, insisting instead the attitude of the players could prove more important.
“Well, it doesn’t depend on the players on the pitch, it depends on the mentality and approach showed during the match or in view of the match,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter if you play with one, two or three forwards.”
“There are two aspects: when you have the ball and when you don’t. When you don’t have the ball you should support the team and close the spaces; when you have the ball you should create offensive actions and attack the spaces, otherwise it won’t be possible to win it.”

Juve start search for new coach; Ronaldinho wants to return to the national team
Juventus are set to stick with Luigi Del Neri until the end of the season, but the Old Lady has reportedly singled out Fabio Capello and Luciano Spalletti to replace the coach next summer.
Gigi Del Neri’s position in the club has come under intense scrutiny after the home defeat to Bologna with Beppe Marotta admitting that the club were reviewing Del Neri’s position.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Del Neri will be allowed to finish the season at Olimpico, but he will almost certainly be sacked at the end of the season.
The Bianconeri have already started searching for replacements, with club president Andrea Agnelli expected to contact his close friend Fabio Capello regarding the Juventus job.
Should the England boss reject the offer, the job will be offered to Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti, who’s been heavily linked to Juventus over the last few months.
Gigi Del Neri’s coaching methods failed to get the best out of the team and Juve are desperate for a fresh approach.
The Bianconeri need a coach who can stabilize the team as well as cope with the constant media pressure, so it is little wonder Fabio Capello and Luciano Spalletti are in the mix.

Qatar wants to add Man Utd feather to its World Cup cap?
Andy Green in a Guardian article thinks paying £1.5bn for Man Utd is too much. But it maybe a price the Glazers could settle on to make a tidy profit. If there is anybody that can pull it off without thinking twice it is the al- Thani family that rule Qatar. Which is why there are such persistent rumours of a takeover. It may not be dismissed lightly.
The al-Thani's managed to get the 2022 World Cup against conventional wisdom partly because of their wrinkle free financial clout. A few weeks later Barca signed a record five year £125m million (£25m/ year) shirt sponsorship deal with the Qatar Foundation, a non-profit organization run by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The stunning speed with which the sponsorship was launched was seen by some as a quid pro quo for Spain's support for Qatar's 2022 bid. But more likely it was a way of bailing out of trouble one of the biggest names in football (Barca posted record losses) and creating goodwill. Having UNICEF and the Qatar Foundation logo on the same jersey will not hurt either.
A Man Utd takeover for investment purposes holds no interest for the mega billionaire Qataris. But a club of its stature will be a huge boost to Qatar's ambition as sporting superpower. The ruling family has a history of trying unconventional methods of attracting talented players to the tiny Emirate but they've largely failed. Now it has set up the Aspire Football Dreams Academy that sends out scouts to countries to sign up talented schoolchildren and bring them to Qatar to develop them. Some of them might nurse ambitions playing for a club like Man Utd while their end of the bargain would be to represent Qatar.
There maybe substance to these rumours if we start looking away from an investment angle and consider the larger vision that Qatar is intent on embarking.

Appleton wants top job at West Brom
West Brom caretaker manager Michael Appleton has played under some of Britain’s very best bosses and now hopes to transfer some of their skills into his own style.
Appleton has been appointed on a temporary basis at The Hawthorns following last week’s sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and looks set to take charge of the side’s crucial match with West Ham on Saturday.
And the former Manchester United and Preston midfielder cannot wait to put everything he has learned in his career into practice.
“Obviously starting out as a young kid at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, there’s no better tutor out there,” he said.
“Then I played under David Moyes at Preston and then Gary Megson at West Brom. Then we’ve had the likes of Tony Mowbray, Bryan Robson and obviously Di Matteo as well.”
“They’ve all got their own attributes and strengths – I’m not going to try and copy them but just try and take the good bits and become my own man.”
It has been a rollercoaster week at the club following the side’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City last Saturday.
Di Matteo was relieved of his duties the next day, with his assistant Eddie Newton also leaving, which meant Appleton was placed in temporary charge.
The 35-year-old is on the list of possible candidates to take over full-time, along with Chris Hughton – who has been strongly tipped to get the job.
But Appleton said: “It’s a huge game and that’s all I’ve been trying to focus the players. After losing the manager and everything else that goes with that, it’s important to try and refocus the players.”
“We’ve gone down to the basic stuff and made sure there’s nothing distracting.”
“I’ve never hidden from the fact that I want to be a manager. I’ve gone out and taken all the badges necessary. I think with my personality and the strength I can bring to football clubs, this was always going to be the step.”
Appleton has been well received by the player so far, with midfielder Steven Reid declaring: “He’s been great. He’s not new to all the lads in the squad because he’s been a major part of the club for a number of years now.”
“He has filled the role well and we’ve had a good weekend. The lads will be fully behind Appleton for however long he’s in charge.”
Midfielder Graeme Dorrans (ankle) and defender Marek Cech (groin) are both major doubts for the match.

Big Ron wants Big Sam at West Brom
Former West Brom manager Ron Atkinson has urged the Baggies to look to Sam Allardyce to retain Premier League status.
West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace unexpectedly sacked Roberto Di Matteo on Sunday, sparking contrasting reactions amongst the club’s fans, and furious debate as to who should succeed him.
Atkinson has now waded into the debate, suggesting Allardyce should get the nod ahead of other contenders Derek McInnes, Roy Hodgson and Chris Hughton.
“If I were the chairman, that would be my first thought. Go to Big Sam and ask him to come in until the end of the season to keep the team up – they can review things after that,” Atkinson told the Wolverhampton Express and Star.
“But the immediate aim is survival. They need someone with the drive, the experience and the know-how in situations like this and Sam ticks those boxes.”
“He’s been at the club before and knows what it’s all about.”
Despite Atkinson’s words, however, it appears likely that Peace will put his faith in caretaker manager Michael Appleton, at least for the short term.
On Monday, Appleton received the backing of sporting director Dan Ashworth ahead of vital home matches in the next two weeks against West Ham and Wolves.
“Staying in the Premier League is of paramount importance and we feel that with the right appointment, we can still achieve our goal. In the meantime, first-team affairs are in the very capable hands of Michael Appleton,” said Ashworth.
“He has gained all the coaching badges available, including the UEFA Pro Licence, and knows the club inside out.”
“Most importantly, he has earned the full respect of the players and everyone else at the football club.”
“I have worked closely with Roberto since June 2009 and I would like to thank him, Eddie and Ade for all their hard work during this period and wish them well for the future.”

Gerrard wants Dalglish full-time
Steven Gerrard is convinced Kenny Dalglish is the right man to lead Liverpool for this season and beyond.
Dalglish took over as interim manager at Anfield two weeks ago after the sacking of former manager Roy Hodgson, but has so far failed to arrest Liverpool’s slide down the Premier League table.
But Gerrard has backed the man who won three league titles and two FA Cups during his last stint as Liverpool during the late 1980s, and said he would do everything in his power to ensure Dalglish would remain at the club beyond the end of the season.
“I want to do everything in my power to ensure that he stays here for a long time, beyond the initial six months,” Gerrard told LFC Weekly.
“I’d love nothing better when the end of the season comes than for us to be on the back of a good run of results that ensures he gets the job full-time.”
“That’s my short-term plan, to give everything I’ve got and all my energy to try to make that happen.”
Gerrard, who is currently serving a three-match suspension after being sent off in Liverpool’s 1-0 FA Cup loss to Manchester United, revealed he was ecstatic when he found out about Dalglish’s return to the club.
“I won’t lie. When Kenny rang to say he was coming back it was a big lift,” Gerrard said.
“I love Kenny as a person and I’ve certainly enjoyed the first few days we’ve had working with him. I can see a positive future for Kenny at the club.”
“I think he’s the perfect person to get everyone moving in the right direction again.”
“He’s the talisman at this club. His nickname, the King, says it all really. He’s the perfect manager and also person to bring it all together.”
“It’s time to re-group and for us all to be pulling in the right direction because this season certainly hasn’t been good enough.”

Tue 18 January, 2011Milito wants Barca stay
Defender Gabriel Milito is intent on staying at La Liga club Barcelona, despite being linked with a move away from the club.
The Argentina international has struggled to make an impact at Barcelona since his move in 2007 from league rivals Real Zaragoza, with an ACL knee injury one of several fitness setbacks during his time at the club.
Milito, 30, has made just six appearances for Barca in all competitions this season and has reportedly been targeted by clubs in the English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A.
But, after careful consideration, Milito has announced his intention of staying at the La Liga powerhouse.
“I have had a few days to make a decision, to take stock of the situation, when I haven’t been playing through injury,” he said.
“But I’ve realised that now is not the time to leave the club.”
“I enjoy the day-to-day atmosphere at the club, I like my teammates, I like watching the team when I can’t participate.”
“I think that the best thing for me is to stay, to continue, and to respond when it is my turn to play.”
“I’m set on staying and am keen to play. I want to help the team to take points, and that is one of the reasons behind me staying. There are different situations, but I feel differently now.”
