Wolves up to 19th, wherever next?

By: DJ | December 6th, 2010

9871564West Ham’s defeat on Sunday meant that Wolves were only bottom of the table for a day but the general state of affairs is not looking any brighter as winter sets in. And now we head into the first West Midlands derbies of the season more and more in need of some wins to keep on track for survival. But it is still the case that we still await the first clean sheet of the season and it is still the case that the 4-5-1 formation does not lead to goals scored.

The perseverance with 4-5-1 reached the point on Saturday that even though most of the central midfield players at the club were injured, we pitted three former defenders in to make up the numbers. Henry, Jones, Guedioura and Edwards were all not available so Foley, Mancienne and Ward were called into midfield duty. And despite that bolstering of defensive qualities in midfield Wolves still conceded three. It seems that no matter what players are called on we don’t have the players to keep out the goals. And Stearman and Mouyokolo have been guilty of the types of basic mistakes we never see from the sorely missed Jody Craddock. To add to the injury woes it seems Mancienne who had to go off on Saturday is doubtful for the next game.

Meanwhile the top two goalscorers at the club rarely start a game. Fletcher was not fit at the weekend but probably would not have played anyway. And despite getting the winner last week Ebanks Blake didn’t fit into the preferred formation so had to warm the bench again. In those two strikers plus Doyle, and with the supply from Jarvis surely Wolves have potentially as potent an attack that you will see in the bottom half of the Premier League. But that goal potential is being sacrificed in a failed attempt to stem the goals against. A quick look at the goals for column will see that Wolves have scored 6 goals in the last 5 games, but 5 of those goals have come when we have adopted a 4-4-2 during the game rather than the usual starting 4-5-1.

And yet of course things might have been different on Saturday. Wolves brought a good save out of Robinson and hit the woodwork twice before Blackburn got into the game. If any of those had gone in the game would probably have been very different. So it probably is true that Wolves are not getting a good rub of the green but after 16 games we must be arriving at the point where the league table doesn’t lie.

The two derbies coming up against Birmingham at Molineux this Sunday and away at Albion the following Sunday sees us meet two teams on a high and ones that will probably be more confident and on form than Wolves are. These games do have a habit of form being thrown out of the window, and the Wolves fans dislike of the opposition will ensure the backing of the crowd will be there for them in these games. But if Blues and Albion knock more nails in Wolves Premier League coffin then the mood will have sunk even further for xmas. But there is also no better time to get back on the front foot and restore the faith.
