Wolves stuffed Blackpool at Molineux on Saturday to temporarily at least move out of the relegation zone and set themselves on course for a third successive season in the top flight. It was a fully comprehensive win for Wolves where the only quesiton mark was whether then could turn their superiority into goals but in the end they were to secure their biggest ever Premier League success.
It was a bitter sweet day for Wolves fans who were saddened to here of the death of former defender Dean Richards in the morning. Deano was a top class defender for the club between 1995 and 1999 before moving on to Southampton and then Spurs. His career at Spurs was sadly cut short because of medical problems and this lead to a period of illness and now his death at the age of only 36. He was a quality defender who was always destined to make it to the top flight and he left Wolves after they had failed to gain promotion. A tribute will be paid to him before the game against Spurs at Molineux on March 6th.
For the Blackpool game, McCarthy made two changes to the starting 11 from the Hawthorns with Hamill regaining the right midfield role instead of Foley, and Edwards coming in for Milijas. And Wolves were on the offensive from the word go and were ahead within two minutes. Hamill had a run at the centre of the Blackpool defence before laying it off to Jarvis on the left of the area and he curled the ball past Kingston in the Blackpool goal. And Jarvis was to be a constant threat to the defence in the early exchanges as he had the beating of his full back and was back to his best early season form.
There was some great action after 15 minutes when O’Hata pulled the ball across the goal where Edwards hit what looked like a surefire second goal but Kingston made a great save. Jarvis was causing all sorts of problems for the Blackpool defence and a 2nd goal looked inevitable but the closest Wolves came was a Hamill shot inches over. Wolves finally get the ball in the net but the ref sees a foul on the keeper which I didn’t. Both teams forced to make a substitution due to injuries with Foley replacing Hamill for Wolves. The only worry for Wolves is that despite their domination they only had a one goal lead but their hand was strengthened further just before the break when Pool striker DJ Campbell senselessly got himself sent off. Unhappy with a challenge from Stearman, he struck the Wolves defender in the face and had to go. Surely no coming back for Blackpool after that.
Wolves continued to dominate after the break and Kingston saved well from Foley and O’Hara as a few nerves start to emerge from the crowd about the narrow advantage. But the relief is tangible as O’Hara drills home from outside the area. Wolves immediately bring on Ebanks Blake for an injured Zubar, with Foley dropping to right back. And with still a quarter of the game to go the final sub is used with Ward replacing the tiring Edwards. Blackpool were offering no threat and Wolves fans were getting a bit frustrated that Wolves were not pushing for an improved goal difference, But in the final 15 minutes sub Ebanks Blake put the icing on the cake with two goals. The first turned in from a Doyle cross and the second a low left foot shot after he was put through by Ward.
Hennessey – misssed a couple of crosses early on but then had a very quiet afternoon in the sun
Zubar – typically enthusiastic display joining in the attack and having one good shot on goal before going off injured
Elokobi – had a good game and is growing in confidence on the ball with his run in the team.
Stearman – has stamped the silly errors out of his game and looking a good defender
Berra – Wolves Mr Consistency never put a foot wrong
Hamill – caused Blackpool plenty of problems before leaving injured before half time
Edwards – an excellent return from injury and unlucky not to score
Henry – steady game ahead of the defence and got forward more than usual
O’Hara – his signing is so important to Wolves. Positive in everything he does and links it all together for the attack
Jarvis – man of the match performance, right back to his early season form
Doyle – excellent hold up and linking play and for once got the support around him
Foley – did well after Zubar departed and a natural replacement if the Frenchman misses any games
Ebanks Blake – took his goals excellently and unlucky to not be getting more game time
This was a vital and pressurised game for Wolves and they responded well and never looked like doing anything but winning. They have gone up to 17th in the league and wait to see what West Ham do at home to Liverpool on Sunday and Albion at Stoke on Monday. Wigan’s hammering by Man Utd means the goal difference comparison with Wolves has moved on the day from a 6 goal advantage to Wigan to 2 in favour of Wolves. Ten more games to go for Wolves to secure their place in the Premier League next season and there will be a lot less doubting they can do it after this showing.

I predicted this win but not with 100% conviction, for a change everthing went for wolves and it was pleasing to see how solid they looked with a lot more attacking instinct. I think we will need 40+ points to stay up but for the first time this season I can see it happening, (starting with another win for Deano next Saturday).
