Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has sensationally sacked Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton, deciding that the club needs “more experience” to move forward. Another astonshingly bad PR move from Ashley, just as everyone was beginning to forget about him.
Two years ago, in a previous spell as Caretaker coach at Newcastle, I felt so sorry for Hughton, thrown into a ridiculous situation, seemingly out of his depth with a side not good or motivated enough.
He gave way to Alan Shearer who promptly took Newcastle down a division, only to be reinstated, and win the Championship at a canter. He’s established himself well in the Premier Legue despite Ashley’s refusal to give him a new contract. Newcastle currently sit mid-table, and have a thrashing of local rivals Sunderland that will be remembered for many years on the Tyne to their names.
Newcastle’s away record is a bit shonky, but this is still a crazy, crazy descion. If there was a really good experienced candidate waiting in the wings it would be semi-understandable, but the best the bookies can do is Alan Pardew. Alan Shearer (whose only experience is getting Newcastle relegated) has also thrown his hat into the ring.
Whoever the new man is, he’ll be the 12th manager in 13 years that the Magpies have had. If that isn’t a clear indication as to why they’ve struggled to bring back the “glory days”, then I don’t know what is.
