Everton v. Bolton: A review of ineptitude

In honor of our teams oh so inspired performance against Bolton today, I have decided to try something new. After all if this team is going to put out the type of effort we saw earlier today, then the least I can do is to match such an effort. So a few quick thoughts about the game before I send you off across the wide internet to get some thoughts about this 2-0 loss.

1. Victor Anichebe is just plain awful. Granted I have never been a fan of his, but with the physical presence Anichebe has, he should be doing more than falling over every time a defender touches him a la Christiano Ronaldo. It is also painful to see just how little effort he puts into a game sometimes. Against Manchester City he had 2 silly challenges in a row to get sent off, and today when moved to the right side of the midfield Anichebe became almost non existent in defense. The fact that Jose Baxter of all people came on for Anichebe is hopefully evidence that Moyes is beginning to realize that Anichebe is not cut out for the EPL at this point.

2. Lee Probert needs to learn how to ref a game. Granted Everton were the beneficiaries of some non calls by Probert, but overall this was an absolute horrible display of reffing from him. The free kick that led to Bolton’s first goal was not a foul, and several times Probert had a clear view of Daniel Sturridge as he fell to the grass after a swift breeze knocked into him. Also he missed a Bolton third goal where the ball clearly did not cross the line before being knocked into the waiting path of Holden who blasted it into the back of the net.

3. Heitinga needs to sit on the bench immediately. This may have been the worst display by the Dutchman this season, and it highlights just how vulnerable the Everton defense is with Jags, especially on set pieces. Granted it was unlucky that the ball deflected off of Heitinga and into the net on the first goal, but the fact that Cahill was able to run free to get a head onto it says all you need to know about Heitinga. Moyes please bring Jags back for the F.A. Cup game against Chelsea. Pretty Please?

4. This was by far one of the worst displays by Everton during the tenure of David Moyes. Very few of the players appeared to want to play today, with really Baines being the only person on the team worthy of praise. From the beginning the entire squad appeared apathetic about the game, and there was only a good 20-25 minutes of quality play from the team for the entire game. All that can safely be said is that Finch Farm will not be a very fun place to be this week for the players.

5. Let me start this out by saying I love David Moyes, he has done a fantastic job at Everton at his time with a limited budget, and is arguably the best manager the club has ever had. That said I don’t think he is the manager at EFC come next season. The pictures of Moyes on the sideline from this game show a man close to his breaking point, and I could see Moyes jumping ship in the off season, especially if he is unable to get the type of transfer budget he wants either from selling some players, or from the board. I really hope Moyes stays, but it would not shock me the slightest if he decided enough was enough, and moved on to another club while waiting for SAF to retire from Manchester United.

That is it from me about the game, if you want a real match report head over to the Official Everton Website, or search for it from your favorite news outlet. Honestly it just wasnt a game worth writing about, and next up for the team is a fourth round replay against FA Cup holders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, let’s all hope the team brings a better game to that one, and until next time COYB!
