Undoubtedly, many still remember the context in which the above was said. Those who need a refresher can refer to this and this.
What dark days those were for the club. What made it even worse was the rumor floating around that Rooney’s likely destination at that point was City.
Fast forward to Feb 12th 2011 and all of that seems a distant memory. At least for a night.
The reality is that fans don’t forget or forgive very easily. The notion of you leaving us for City because we couldn’t match their ambitions was a slap in the face. These were fans who had sung your name and believed every word you uttered about loving the club.
Fortunately, the stars aligned for you tonight: Against our noisy neighbors, in front of the fans who only months ago felt utterly betrayed by your actions, and with the score tied at 1-1, you produced a moment of absolute genius:
