Most Everton fans were hoping that the turn of the new year would bring about a turn in fortunes for Everton after a first half of the season marked by missed chances and inconsistency in every game. Everton were unable to put together a complete game all season, but instead of the normal excuse of injuries during the fall, Everton instead were forced to confront the fact that they just weren’t playing well. Unfortunately January once again showed the Jekyll and Hyde nature of this years squad.
Will there be any singing come the end of the season? The new year started off with disappointment when Everton traveled to Stoke City and lost 2-0. It was a simply dreadful performance from the entire team, easily the worst game since West Brom made the trip up to Goodison Park. After this game Tim Cahill would depart for the rest of the month to compete in the Asia Cup with Australia, where he would help the team reach the finals before losing to Japan 1-0.
After this loss a bright spell occurred for 2 games where Everton played Spurs at Goodison and managed to win 2-1 in one of the best games the team has played this season. After this game Everton opened The F.A. Cup third round with a 5-1 victory away to Scunthorpe United. This was only the second time all season, and first since October that Everton were able to string together back to back victories. This was followed by an excellent draw against Liverpool at Anfield, although Everton certainly should have gotten all 3 points for the first time in years.
Of course the nice run of form Everton enjoyed came crashing to halt when West Ham came to visit, and the result was a dreadful 2-2 draw where Everton were lucky to gain one point. Once again the defense proved porous with American Jonathan Spector opening the scoring early, and Everton needing stoppage time to equalize.
After this Everton hosted Chelsea in an F.A Cup 5th round game where the Toffees were currently a better side, but of course the result was a 1-1 draw which ensures a replay at Stamford Bridge on February 19th.
Of course January marks the winter transfer window, and Everton celebrated by letting several players head out on loan, with only one player coming in. Yakubu finally headed out on loan to Leicester City, while James Vaughn returned to Crystal Palace to finish out the season. Of course Steven Pienaar was finally sold to Spurs for a nice 3 million pounds which was a good price considering his contract is up in June. In addition Yobo is still at Fenerbahce, Kieran Agard went to Kilmarnock, and Joao Silva is playing at Uniao Desportiva de Leiria.
The only additions to the team came in the form of youngsters with Sporting Lisbon’s Eric Dier, who is of English descent, and Greek player Apostolos Vellios. While both of these signings could pan out in the future, they certainly did nothing to help the club during this season.
In the end January was a typical month for Everton, but the squad needs to start getting 3 points instead of 1 if they have any hope of European qualification. Hope everyone enjoys the match tomorrow, and until next time COYB!
