It all felt a bit like ‘After the Lord Mayors Show’ at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon. A 2-0 win by a team 2nd in the league against a team in a relegation battle can hardly be described as a shock but I think many Wolves fans felt their team went down with a bit of a whimper and it was a routine and comfortable win for the Gunners. This was not an Arsenal team playing the sparkling passing game that has impressed us all in recent years as Wolves did a decent job of closing them down. But Wolves were to pose very little threat as an attacking unit and whenever they did push Arsenal back we saw the best of the home team as they broke away with pace and purpose.
It was an unchanged Wolves team that set out and they held their own in the opening quarter of an hour but after 16 minutes the home team took the lead with a remarkably simple goal. Fabregas was able to pick out Van Persie in the area who had been lost by Stearman and the dutchman sweetly volleyed home. The Gunners regularly looked capable of extending their lead and Hennessey came to the rescue on a number of occasions including right at the end of the first half with his feet.
At the start of the second half Arsenal could have scored twice very early. Walcott missed a sitter after being set up by Wilshere and then it was Hennesseys feet again to Wolves rescue from the next attack. But the lead was doubled ten minutes after the break. Wolves were on the attack but a lightning break with some excellent first time passing saw Walcott get away unchallenged. His cross picked out Van Persie who calmly scored albeit from what looked like an offside position.
Wolves introduced Ebanks Blake, Foley and then Fletcher during the second half for O’Hara. Jarvis and then Doyle but you had to say only Henessey saved Wolves from a heavier defeat.
Berra had a decent game in defence but Zubar, Elokobi and Stearman all found the Arsenal attack a handful. The midfield never really got to grips with the game as an attacking unit with Henry and Jarvis particularly disappointing. I was surprised that O’Hara who had impressed as an attacking midfielder last week at Molineux was played in a deep role ahead of the defence. This was a role that didn’t seem to suit him at all and not for the first time this season it meant Doyle was isolated as the lone striker. The form of Henry and Jarvis will be a concern though. Henry has not played well since all the furore over his approach in the autumn. His passing is negative and often poor and his trademark tackling is a distant memory. And Jarvis seems to have lost the confidence to take his full backs on in a way that he was doing so brilliantly not so long ago.
With West Ham. Albion, Wigan and Blackpool all getting draws and Birmingham winning it meant Wolves slipped back to the bottom of the table but they are only three points from the survival places and as the league tightens up they are only 9 points off 8th. So all to play for as they prepare for what looks like by far the most important games of the season at Albion and at home to Blackpool. The really tough games are gone now and the gap is not so big as to be beyond them. In fact as the Black Country derby looms Wolves will know that a win at the Hawthorns can take them above their rivals.

Offside? You blind?

Clearly offside. Persie was in an offside position, when Walcott recieved the ball, so he wasn’t allowed to take advantage of that position later.
