Just as they had done in 2004 bottom of the table Wolves beat top of the table Man Utd at Molineux and it was a deserved win after an excellent team perfomance of great effort and no little skill. After Wigan’s win earlier in the afternoon it was sinking in as we made our way to the ground that defeats against Man Utd and Arsenal in the next two games would likely give Wolves too big a mountain a climb to save their Premier League skins. But as the club motto often reminds us, Out of Darkness Cometh Light.
McCarthy made two changes to the team from the Bolton game with Milijas and O’Hara coming in for Edwards and Jones.
Hennessey
Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Elokobi
Henry, Milijas
Hamill, O’Hara, Jarvis
Doyle
United lost Ferdinand in the warm up and brought in Evans but they were otherwise at full strength. Wolves made a bright opening with Zubar getting in a dangerous cross and when the ball fell to Milijas on the edge of the area he shot just over. But a misplaced pass by Elokobi presented United with their first attack and they took full advantage. The ball was played out to Nani on the right and Elokobi never got close to him as he cut inside and shot into the near corner of the net. I immediately recalled a pre match conversation when we said that we must avoid conceding early otherwise we could get a hammering. And Rooney and Nani had attempts on goal as the crisp United passing was ripping Wolves apart and home fans were already fearing the worst.
But Wolves hadn’t read the script.
Jarvis won a corner and after exchanging passes with Hamill he got in an excellent cross that was headed in by Elokobi. The game then opened up with United playing some excellent stuff but Wolves well in the game and causing a few problems of their own. In front of a full house, a great atmosphere and a game you couldn’t take your eye off – this was why we want to stay in this division. And it was to get even better. Milijas had one free kick that was deflected wide with Van Der Saar beaten and when the Serb had another free kick from a wider position he whipped in a cross from which a Doyle header put Wolves ahead.
United replaced Carrick with Scholes at the break but Wolves were looking increasingly capable of holding their advantage as they were defending well, United were not creating much and Doyle was excellent whenever the ball went forward. Wolves introduced Foley and Ward for O’Hara and Jarvis and SEB late on for Hamill. United brought on Hernandez for Berbatov and Smalling for Evans.
United pressed Wolves back as the game wore on and there were some brave blocks but no clear cut openings, and United’s frustration was evident with Fletcher continually moaning to the ref and Giggs and Smalling both fouling Doyle off the ball. And Scholes was booked for trying to put a cross in the net with his hand. But Wolves held firm for a famous victory.
Hennessey – so much more confident a keeper nowadays, really looking the part
Zubar – got a great reception from the crowd and responded with an excellent performance
Stearman – such an improved player this season and the daft mistakes that have blighted his game are no longer evident
Berra – the star man in an improving defence and this back line have now conceded only 6 in 7 games when they have played together
Elokobi – at fault for the United goal but got the equaliser and then stood up well to the considerable threat of Nani
Henry – some loose passing and misssed tackles early but grew into the game and had an excellent second half
Milijas – made the winning goal, got in some good probing passes and showed how much he has added to his defensive game by man marking Fletcher
Hamill – not in the game as much as he would like but did plenty enough to impress on his home league debut
O’Hara – succeeeded where others have failed this season in linking the midfield to the lone striker and seemed to get a good understanding with Doyle knocking balls into his feet all evening
Jarvis – his best game for a while and a real threat to United especially in the first half
Doyle – scored the winner and a real handful for the United defence. Benefitted from getting good support from O’Hara and Jarvis. A man of the match performance
A truly memorable game and a great result. You just never know in this great game of football. Wolves are one match away from ending their last difficult run of games of the season and the end of games against the top four teams. They now need to get results against the teams in the lower half of the division to secure their Premier League future. Its not going to become easy but its definitely doable now. And nobody at Molineux tonight will want to lose the right to stage Premier League games like this.
