A ridiculous back pass by Ronald Zubar in the 93rd minute robbed Wolves of a comfortable and vital point at Bolton and sent Wolves back to the foot of the table. It was a cruel ending to a game that Wolves had worked hard to earn a point and came close to getting all three.
Wolves adopted the 4-2-3-1 formation that they had used in the second half of the game against Stoke at the weekend and gave a first start to Adam Hamill and preferred Jones to Milijas;
Hennessey
Zubar. Stearman, Berra, Elokobi
Henry, Jones
Hamill, Edwards, Jarvis
Doyle
The first close call for Wolves came from a poor Zubar backpass after 10 minures but Berra came to the rescue. But Wolves should have been ahead soon after. A through ball from Hamill saw Jarvis clean through with the keeper to beat but he shot wide. And then Hennessey made the first of a number of fine saves to push Elmander’s shot round the post. And it was Hennessey again to Wolves rescue when Taylor had a clear chance but the keeper saved with his legs.
Wolves should surely have had a penalty midway through the half. Hamill had an effort blocked and well the ball came back to him he was flattened but the ref gave nothing. There were close calls at both ends just before the break when Ricketts shot inches wide for Bolton and then a Doyle cross found Edwards on the near post but he effort was high and wide.
The second half started with an excellent run from the impressive Hamill but his shot was blocked. Hennessey made another good save but then Bolton were lucky not to go down to ten men. A strong challenge by Stearman on Robinson saw the two players end up in a tangle on the floor and the Bolton player appeared to throw a punch but the ref gave yellow cards to both players. Hennessey made another two good saves before Wolves replaced Jarvis and Edwards with O’Hara and Ward.
Wolves came within inches of pinching the win in the 88th minute. A long clearance found Doyle on the right and as he didn’t have any support he ran on goal himself and his shot was deflected by Knight leaving Jaaskelainen strnaded but the ball came back off the post. With Wolves doing most of the late attacking Bolton had settled for a draw until Zubar under no pressure senselessly knocked the ball across his own area to present Sturridge with an easy chance to win the game for Bolton.
Hennessey – starting to look the keeper we hoped he would become. Man of the match
Zubar – played well generally but nearly let Bolton in with a poor backpass early on and there was real fury from his fellow defenders at his late error
Stearman and Berra – both excellent and were distraught at the end
Elokobi – defended well but distribution often poor
Henry – got booked for his only foul. Poor passing at times
Jones – his best game of the season. Worked hard and set up a lot of Wolves attacks
Hamill – had a really good game, running at the defence and almost Ronaldo like in his trickery. Will be a crowd pleaser
Edwards – played behind Doyle and looked lost in the role at times
Jarvis – lost the sparkle of early season and didn’t have a good game
Doyle – excellent movement and control but the lack of support meant Wolves rarely looked like scoring
O’Hara – looks a busy player and runs well with the ball but also looked in need of games to get his sharpness
Such a disappointment for Wolves after a performance where they certainly deserved a point. With Man Utd on Saturday and then a trip to Arsenal to follow the league table could look quite ugly in a fortnight. There will be no room for errors like Zubar’s tonight when Wolves go into the final run in.
