So is this strategy of playing more defenders a good/viable one for us to adopt for the final 2 months of our season? Considering how much our midfield has struggled and the ensuing criticism that has come from that, perhaps playing our “best available” players in slightly different roles is a better option than reverting back to what we were seeing on the field for the past few months. Granted, any team with more than 5 recognized defenders in the starting lineup will naturally be more defensive, yet, we hustled, closed down space, and just looked less sloppy and less likely to be run off the field. The downside to this option was our inability to really take control of the midfield and dictate play. Yet playing with 4 “real” midfielders in the middle hasn’t exactly guaranteed us that luxury in the past (especially when Bebe, Obertan and/or Gibson made up part of that quartet).
Perhaps it is our good fortune that both Rafael and Fabio are Brazilian and have that renowned forward instincts/flair (that Ando seems to be strangely lacking) as part of their DNA despite being recognized defenders position-wise. We certainly wouldn’t feel as comfortable if 3 out of the 4 midfielders were defenders in the JOS mould. With Park on the road to recovery and Valencia back from injury as well, we would be able to utilize the twins without expecting them to play the full 90 minutes in every game.
Assuming a backline of Brown, Smalling, Vidic and Evra, what would be your preferred midfield lineup until we get everyone back to full fitness?
I’m leaning toward something like this:
Valencia – O Shea – Scholes – Rooney – Fabio
