Wolves have not yet managed to win two successive games this season but that’s what they will be hoping to change on Sunday as well as clinching their third successive home win. With the worst away record in the division, it’s the form at Molineux that has kept Wolves head above water this season and a win on Sunday will put them in the top half of the league table of home form for 2010/11.
Their opponents at 16:00 on Sunday will be a Spurs team that have the third best away record in the Premier League over the season but they had a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Blackpool two weeks ago and they haven’t played since. That defeat was the only blip in February though as they had won the previous 4 games with a home win against Bolton and away successes at Blackburn, Sunderland and AC Milan. The return against Milan is probably the biggest game in Spurs recent history and that comes up next Wednesday. But after a mid term break in Dubai, Harry should not need to be resting legs ahead of their big occasion. But Bale, Van De Vaart, Huddlestone and King are all thought to be not ready to play against Wolves.
Wolves have a few injury problems of their own. Ronald Zubar has had a few knocks lately and he won’t be playing this weekend, while Edwards and Jones are also doubtful, Hunt remains unfit, and O’Hara is ineligible to play against his parent club. Foley will slip into the Right Back slot and there will be no problems there but Wolves look a bit thin on the ground in central midfield. Milijas will doubtless return to play alongside Henry and I have a feeling that McCarthy will want to retain the shape of the side that won the last two home games and I can see him asking Stephen Ward to fill the attacking midfield role if Edwards doesn’t make it. The alternative would be to change the formation to 4-4-2 and give Ebanks Blake a deserved start after his two goals last week.
There was some positive news on the injury front this week with Michael Kightly playing the first 45 minutes of Wolves reserves 3-3 draw with Man Utd. He evidently came through with flying colours so teams all through the football league will be knocking on Wolves door to take him on loan later in March. And who knows he might yet play a part for Wolves before the season is over. Michael Mancienne is also nearing fitness so he will soon be returning from Chelsea for the final run in.
Before the game on Sunday there will be a tribute to Dean Richards who sadly passed away last week. He played for both Wolves and Spurs and it will be good to remember him with a minute of applause. He was a classy and very popular player at Molineux and will always be remembered fondly.
There will be one eye on the other relegation contenders throughout the rest of the season and Blackpool on Monday at home to Chelsea. and Wigan away at Man City on Saturday teatime will hopefully have a pointless weekend. The main game at this end of the table sees Albion travel to a Birmingham team that may well be hungover and suffering from shock having finally won a trophy. Hodgson who brought boring and negative football to Liverpool earlier this season and was shown the door as a result has soon made his mark on Albion with three successive draws, and they might make it four on Saturday.
So Wolves have the chance to make further gain on Wigan, Blackpool and at least one of Blues and Albion, if they can get a result against Spurs. There’s no more games against any team in the top 7 after this one so in theory it will get easier. Of course the truth is no game is easy at this level but after sending Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea packing off from Molineux without a point Wolves certainly won’t be facing Spurs with any form of inferiority complex.
