Two chances for Wolves to get the win they need

WOLVES V ALBION 4 GD 08Sunday’s win against Albion will stay in the memory of the current generation of Wolves fans for a long time as they rose to the big occasion and beat their biggest rivals and took a big step towards Premier League survival. There were plenty of good performances from the men in Old Gold and none better than Stephen Hunt, Steven Fletcher and Stephen Ward.  All smiles from Wolves fans this week then and the 2011/12 season might well have a happy ending after all.

Many Wolves fans were starting to think the club would not be able to find a way of winning without Kevin Doyle. Three defeats and two draws followed his injury and with Matt Jarvis losing his form, Wolves went into the derby without the two players who will probably start favourites to win the player of the season award. And it’s not fanciful now to say Wolves can make a big step forward next season if they can just stay up. Three Premier League strikers in Doyle, Fletcher and Ebanks Blake. Four good wide players in Jarvis, Hunt, Hamill and Kightly. A promising midfield with Henry, Guedioura, Edwards, Milijas and maybe O’Hara. And an ever improving keeper in Hennessey. The defence will be the focus of summer spending, and the future looks bright, the future looks an Old Gold shade of Orange.

But first there’s three more points to find this season. And although Wolves do not need to rely on any other team now to stay up it looks certain to still be all to play for on the final day. A win at Sunderland on Saturday lunchtime would all but clinch survival by taking Wolves to 40 points. And if Wigan and Blackpool then lost at the weekend then survival would be secure.

But in reality Wigan will be favourites to beat West Ham and Blackpool will fancy their chances of beating a fading Bolton. And Wolves have only won once away in 2011. So it’s far from out of the question that Wolves will go into their final game in 19th, and if Blackburn and Birmingham avoid defeat at home to Man Utd and Fulham respectively they would be out of Wolves reach. That doomsday scenario would mean that Wolves would need to win their last game and rely on both  Wigan losing at Stoke and Blackpool at Man Utd.  So the job is far from done.

But it won’t be like that. If Wolves play anywhere near as well at Sunderland as they did on Sunday they will get a result against a team that does not have any fit strikers with Gyan, Wellbeck and Campbell all unavailable. And its last chance saloon for West Ham at Wigan so that will be a tight one. Blackburn will likely be beaten by a United team looking to clinch the title. and Blackpool have not won any of their last 9 so can’t be tipped confidently to beat even a Bolton team looking ready for their summer holidays.

So Blackburn will come to Molineux with 39 points. Blackpool will go to Old Trafford on the last day on 39 points max and will surely lose there even if United rest a couple. West Ham can’t get more than 39.  So 40 points will surely be enough for Wolves, just a matter of whether they get there this week or next. And if its next, then that Blackburn game will be winner takes all.WOLVES V ALBION 33 GD 08
