Next stage in the Wolves group of death

By: DJ | October 29th, 2010

milijasThe World Cup always has a Group of Death and the run of 5 games that Wolves are in feels like thats what we have drawn. And with two of the five down we have seen two good performances and two defeats. Wolves might settle for a scruffy result in one of the remaining 3 games. Next up is the team that is trying to buy the league and the richest team in Manchester and that nowadays is City, certainly in terms of transfer market power. The City bench on Saturday will probably have cost more than the entire Wolves team.

City had a bad result by losing 3-0 to Arsenal last week but they were down to 10 men after only 5 minutes and actually competed well for a long while after that. Most significantly they then suffered an injury to Carlos Tevez that rules him out of this weekend’s game. Balotelli looks likely to step in and although he is rated a great prospect he has neither the ability nor workrate of Tevez.  City are currently 4th in the table but on the same points as United and Arsenal. They have scored only 5 away as Mancini tends to adopt a quite conservative Italian style with up to 3 defensive midfield players. So goals will not be easy for Wolves to come by.

Over the last couple of games a number of players have made good cases to get into the Wolves first 11. Hennessey did well at Old Trafford but Hahnemann will probably hold his place in goal. Foley and Berra are certainties for the back 4 but Stearman and Mouyokolo have both had decent games in Craddock’s absence, and Elokobi has done well in his last couple of appearances and will be pushing for the left back slot. It will probably be Foley, Stearman, Berra and Ward but there are a couple of close calls there.

I don’t envisage a move from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 during this difficult run of games. And I would like to see Milijas given another game as the deepest midfield player as he was at Chelsea. That would represent a change of position for Henry on his return from suspension but playing further forward where he can disrupt the play of the opposition midfield would work well. Jones will probably get the nod ahead of Edwards for the other central  midfield role with Hunt and Jarvis wide. In a 4-5-1 it has to be Doyle as the lone striker as I don’t think that role would suit Ebanks Blake or Fletcher. It has to be said that SEB is unlucky to be out of the team at the moment though and he will be at the front of the queue when the less onerous games come around.

If Wolves can maintain the standards of the last two games then they must stand a chance of getting something from this game although we cannot under estimate the all round strength of the City team who are emerging as potentially the main threat to Chelsea for the title. They will see this as a good chance to get back on track after their Arsenal defeat, but Wolves are showing no signs of rolling over against the big teams and with an overdue run of the ball you never know.
