Disappointing Wolves fall to Reds

WOLVES V LIVERPOOL 8 GD 22Liverpool won for the first time since the return to management of Kenny Dalglish as they outnumbered Wolves in midfield and secured a slightly flattering 3-0 win. Wolves matched Liverpool in possession but rarely looked like scoring as the Reds comfortably absorbed what was thrown at them and took their chances to run out emphatic winners in the end.

McCarthy made one change from the team that did well at Man City last week by bringing Karl Henry back into the midfield to replace David Jones. Wolves were getting as much of the ball in the early stages but the Reds were holding them comfortably and were looking more likely to break the deadlock. And they were to go ahead 5 minutes before the break when Morales broke clear on the left and squared for Torres to score easily. Plenty of appeals for offside but Zubar was playing them on. With Wolves not getting their wide players into the game it was 5 Liverpool players against 2 from Wolves in central midfield so the Reds were always looking comfortable as Wolves often resorted to long balls forward. A Fletcher shot and then a half chance for Milijas was all Wolves could muster.

Wolves switched Jarvis to the left wing to try to get him into the game but they were still not unduly troubling the Red defence and when Liverpool went two up 5 minutes into the second half it was virtually game over. After Berra headed clear Morales, who was probably the best player on the field, volleyed in from 25 yards for an excellent goal. Liverpool were set up with two banks of 4 and although Wolves were getting most of the possession they didn’t look like scoring, with a Fletcher shot the best attempt. Wolves were getting the wide players into the game now but the final ball was poor.

Wolves introduced Hammil for his debut in place of Hunt on the right wing and he briefly lifted the crowd with the best two crosses of the game. But the home team gradually ran out of ideas and cruelly Torres added a third in injury time as Wolves pushed forward.

In front of a full house it was a disappointing day for the Wolves who didn’t play badly but always looked the likely losers. They are off the bottom only on goal difference and it all remains tight after Birmingham and Wigan’s defeats and West Ham’s draw. Ten days now to the next Premier League game at Bolton with the cup game in between against Stoke. So the battle goes on and we wait and see if they can get enough results. But they will have to do better at both ends of the pitch than they did today to get the end placing they want.
