Sunderland - Arsenal Match Thread

">digg: reddit: stumbleupon:TJChris, I am a ref. Albeit for u-16-u-19 games, but they are top level regional matchups between good youth sides. For the most part, it's under the discretion of the ref, in no way can he go under 4 minutes, but he can go over. With all the free flowing play, and minimum stoppages in stoppage time one would fairly assume 4 minutes at halffield would mean game over. I would to. There are some strict guys like the dude from Everton last week who blows it no matter where you are on the field. Others let it run. I let it go until the attack is over. Its interpretative when the attack is over. Is it at halffield? Is it when you lose the ball? I think I would have let him get one more cross, but that's for little youth guys. You usually see EPL refs call it whenever they aren't in the immediate area around the penalty area. So basically, I can kinda understand Phil Dowd personally, but based on past precedent, fuck you Phil.ChrisCan anyone with refereeing experience out there explain why when 4 minutes extra time are shown and there are no breaks in play (subs, injuries, cards, goals) the ref allows play to continue beyond the four complete minutes ?TJNasri has to take that penalty. But when we look at it, with a man down, we were FAR outplayed in the first half, with a fluke goal for us... I think the result is oretty fair. We were just all convinced that we were gonna get a good result we didn't deserve.JGAgreed, yes the ref was shit and Rosicky as well with the pen but we lost here last year and Sunderland is a tough opponent. These gritty games, draw or win, are what makes championships. Sunderland was unlucky not to score in the 1st half and I think Almunia did very well coming out of his line as well as saving that Gyan header. And Squillaci/Koscielny were competent defensively, food for thought.TJI really like Squillaci and Koscienly, when the ball is on the ground and they are defending a man. Some positioning and tracking runs into the box were poor, the 3-4 headers they had from 10 yards or in, especially the Bent one and I think Malbranque from like 5 yards out. But that happens from time to time. And I agree, a draw isnt a bad result. Sunderland will take points from MOST sides at home, even maybe.. the perfect Chelsea. Fuck Chelsea. Anywho, not a bad result if you were to merely see the score. But seeing when they scored, it just hurts. But heads up Gooners! Let's beat Spurs A team with out B team, and then go kick the shit out of West Brom.Dorbellthink positive guys... our defending was quite resilient until their goal.yanivwell, i feel sick but before i start blaming everyone, i'm just thinking, not a bad result in the end.. a very poor game from the arsenal, and we got away with the draw.. 1 poor game doesnt define our season.. others will struggle at various time.. its all coolPaulFor all of the missed opportunities Phil Dowd cost us the game. The Song red should be challenged and easily overturned as there was no contact on the first one and the second was soft. If Arsenal had the ball at midfield at 4:10 into stoppage he would have blown. He also let them grab a lot with no whistle or whistle and no card.JGAgreed. Ref should have blown the whistle when that corner was cleared, not give Zenden enough time to cross the ball in and the goal. Numerous Sunderland players were offside too, when Zenden crossed it in.
But to be positive, yes the last minute goal was painful, but with Cesc injured and Song sent off, it could have been far worse. We still drew here when last year we lost, remember. We have to keep our heads off and think of it as a blip, not a start of bad form.
Oh, and Rosicky? Let Nasri take the penalties next time, will ya?Homey_MillsStill have to blame ourselves. If Rosicky makes the penalty, none of it matters. Argh. We'll be thinking about those 2 points when April comes around.Isabel_GI feel sickHondoWho the fuck decided that rosicky takes the penalty??? We have Chamakh for scoring goals..eternally_tmhI know!!! If Fabregas was there, it would've been a GOAL!!!TJballs at half-field with 4:08. And you don't call the game. Very unfortunate finish.Homey_MillsSo sick. Two points dropped for no reason. Should have blown the whistle. Ugh ugh ugh.TJgotta be fucking shitting me.JGShit.eternally_tmhHang in there Arsenal!!!!Homey_MillsI'd rather see Eboue get in. We need defense now, not another goal.JGALMUNIA! great save!Homey_MillsI was thinking Nasri at the time as well. I was trying to thinking what the pecking order is... I've seen Cesc, RvP, and AA take them well. None were on the field though.JGOn a perfect day, pecking order is RVP, Cesc, AA, and then whoever is on the pitch. Would like to see Vermaelen take one, but obviously he wasn't here today.JGWe need some spark. It's Vela time.Homey_MillsI was just thinking "why is Rosicky taking this??" Wow. Terrible effort on it. Could have pretty well sealed it there.JGPENALTY! Let's make it 2-0, men.

Damn you, Rosicky. Nasri should have taken it.Homey_MillsAnd then no yellow for the foul against Wilshere? Wow. This is poor.TJ2nd caution on Song? Nothing on Bramble. Fuck that. Fuck you Phil Dowd.Homey_MillsAwful awful call against Song there.JGBeautiful play by Arsenal, only for Arshavin to shoot it wide. Still, we're getting more into the game.
Commentators in my feed are saying Cesc out for 3 weeks, or just about the Chelsea game, frak.

Fuu.... Song gets a second yellow for a dumb challenge on MalbranqueZito_v2What the hell just happened that half? did Sunderland just dominate us?J___VIt's a new injury every single week. Ankle ligaments I heardGonner4everHe would've been limping bad if it was ligaments. Reckon hamstringGonner4everWe're asleep- wake up Arsenal! Need to settle and pass it around a bit to get some rhythm back. Clichy too prone to lapses- time for Gibbs- he's better at heading as well.J___VHe's better than clichy at most thingsIsabel_GWe are really lucky to be ahead. We picked it up towards the end of the half but Sunderland have been the better more dominant team. They have had two free headers. Arsenal really need to pick up the tempo or we are going to drop points Some sources are saying Fabregas did his knee, the other his hamstring. Hopefully he will just be out for a week, or at least back for the Chelsea game. Its really frustrating, its always our most in-form player: Nasri, Walcott, Fabregas.Homey_MillsJust looking at the schedule again, I think we should hope Cesc comes back for the Oct. 3 game against Chelsea. I think we can handle the games in between. Not saying the trip to Belgrade is an easy win without him, but I do think getting out of the group stage is easy at the end of the day.JGDear God, Sunderland are dominating, I'll happily take a 0-1 at the half

Cesc's injury knee-related. It got him when he deflected Ferdinand's shot into the net.Homey_MillsI predict 1 goal won't be enough for us to win. They're getting too many chances on us.Homey_MillsYeah, hopefully not a huge injury. He seemed pretty decent. Hopefully just a week or so out.JGDamn, Sagna in pain now too.
When will it end?Aman2102ArsenalJGRosicky apparently reading himself up... commentators wondering if it's for Fabregas, wth?

Yes, Fabregas off for Rosicky, crap! Let's hope it's just a precautionary measure, didn't look like he was in much pain but couldn't runHomey_MillsA second bad giveaway by Wilshere already. Not sure what he's doing at times, and it leads to a booking.
Regarding the Cesc goal... hopefully it serves as a reminder in the value of pressuring opposing defenders. Maybe AA was watching too.Isabel_GThat is one of the weirdest luckiest goals I have ever seen.. luckily it went in Arsenal's favour. We are giving away far too many corners at the moment thoughJGGlad Fabregas got his first league goal, but what a crazy goal that was.
Sunderland being reduced to long-range shots.Homey_MillsWow, what a crazy goal. Nice. Won't see that again in another 100 years.J___VComfortable with anyone in the middle at the mo, everyones in form.Isabel_GSunderland boss Steve Bruce: "What we don't want to see is people carried off with serious injuries. But we can't let Arsenal run the show, so we have tackle fairly."Gooner4everCome on the gunners! Gotta keep winning before Blue Scum disappear over horizon.
