Fulham away is next on the agenda for Wolves as they look to build on a good start to 2010/11. The cottagers are enjoying their tenth consecutive season in the Premier League and have established themselves as a mid table team pushing for Europa League qualification. So not an easy game for any visitors to Craven Cottage.
After opening with a goalless draw at Bolton, Fulham have had consecutive 2-2 draws at home to Man Utd and away at Blackpool. Also in August they beat Werder Bremen in a friendly 5-1 and Port Vale in the Carling Cup 6-0 to show their goal scoring capabilities. With new manager Mark Hughes doubtless making them a more solid outfit they should be in for another decent season. The corresponding fixture last season was a goalless draw at at time when Wolves were playing 4-5-1 and clocking up valuable points towards their survival. The home team may go into Saturday’s game without Mark Schwarzer, their top keeper, who is injured.
As for Wolves, the majority of the team picks itself but we do have the continued debate about who should play on the opposite wing to Matt Jarvis. There looks to be three options. Van Damme may again figure on the left with Jarvis playing on the right. Foley may move forward to right midfield with Zubar recalled to right back. Or Guedioura may get a chance on the right side. My hunch is that Van Damme will not play and it will be one of the other options.
The other change I can envisage for the next two games that are both away in London is to see Michael Mancienne come in to the centre of midfield alongside Karl Henry at David Jones’ s expense. Jones had a good start to the season but didn’t make much impact against Newcastle last week and I think the double defensive option at the centre of the midfield gives Wolves a more solid look and enables them to play with two attacking wide players to support two strikers.
So my choice tomorrow would be;
Hahnemann
Foley, Craddock, Berra, Ward
Guedioura, Henry, Mancienne, Jarvis
Ebanks Blake, Doyle
We would then see the likes of Hennessey, Zubar, Stearman, Jones, Halford, Fletcher and Bent on the bench.
The other big boost for Wolves going into this game is that last season’s best player Kevin Doyle is now up to speed having excelled for Ireland during the International break. With SEB also playing well and Guedioura having scored a cracker for Algeria last week then Fulham are not the only team with goals in them and it is likely to be a close and entertaining game on Saturday.
