La Liga: Almeria 1 Athletic Bilbao 3

Almeria’s struggle to avoid La Liga relegation took another blow with a 3-1 defeat at home to Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

Hosts Almeria took the lead through Pablo Piatti six minutes into the match at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterreneos.

The diminutive Argentine forward broke through the Bilbao defence before beating goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz to make it 1-0.

Teenage winger Iker Muniain levelled for the visitors on 29 minutes, netting a rebound after Almeria goalkeeper Diego Alves failed to hold a shot.

And seven minutes into the second half, forward Gaizka Toquero beat Alves with a left-foot shot to make it 2-1 to Bilbao.

Pablo Orbaiz made it 3-1 on the hour mark, completing the turnaround for the away side by catching Alves out with a long-range effort from close to the halfway line.

The win sees Bilbao regain fifth place from Sevilla on goal difference.

Almeria are now three points adrift at the bottom of the table and four points off safety.

Malaga snapped an eight game winless run and moved off the bottom of the La Liga table with a 3-1 win over relegation rivals Almeria.

After conceding an early goal, Malaga capitalised on the dismissals of Leonardo Ulloa and Antonio Luna to net three times in the second half, securing three valuable points and sending Almeria to the foot of the table.The sides with the two worst records in the Spanish top flight this season faced off at the Estadio La Roasaleda in Malaga with both teams desperate for a win as they try to stave off relegation.Malaga went into the match one point behind Almeria, and things were not looking good for the hosts when Sofiane Feghouli put the visitors ahead after just nine minutes.But Enzo Maresca brought Malaga level just seven minutes after the break when he found the back of the net.

The match turned in the hosts favour when Ulloa received his marching orders on 76 minutes after picking up a second yellow card.It took Malaga just three minutes to make the most of the advantage, with Salomon Rondon firing them ahead on 79 minutes.Any hope of an unlikely equaliser for Almeria was lost when Luna received his second yellow card two minutes from time, with Juanmi capping the celebration for Malaga with a third goal in injury time.The win leaves Malaga two points adrift of safety, with just six points separating the bottom eight sides.

La Liga wrap: Important wins for Almeria, Real

Almeria climbed off the bottom of the La Liga table with a 3-2 win over relegation rivals Osasuna on Sunday.

Jose Luis Oltra’s men got off to a dream start, with goals to Carlos Garcia Badias and Leonardo Ulloa putting them two-up after just 11 minutes.

Badias was on the end of a Hernan Bernadello corner to finish from inside the six-yard box, before Michel’s cross found Argentine striker Ulloa three minutes later to give the hosts a strong lead.

Osasuna pulled a goal back via the boot of Carlos Aranda, whose shot from the edge of the area sparked the visitors into action.

But they could not find an equaliser, and shortly after the break the home side restored their two-goal buffer when Ulloa scored his second from Michael Jakobsen’s cross.

Osasuna striker Dejan Lekic struck two minutes into second-half injury time to create some nervous moments for Almeria but they held on for three vital points, lifting them to 18th on the table and just one point from safety.

Real Madrid kept the gap between themselves and Barcelona to four points on the table, with a 1-0 victory over Mallorca.

France forward Karim Benzema’s strike in the 61st minute was all Jose Mourinho’s side needed to get maximum points from the clash at the Bernabeu.

Espanyol consolidated their fifth placing on the table with a 3-1 win away to Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Miku put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute, and they maintained their lead to the break.

But it was all Espanyol after half-time, as Luis Garcia, Jose Callejon and Sergio Garcia all netted in the space of 12 minutes.

Real Zaragoza continued their resurgent league form, bringing up their third win in four with a 1-0 triumph over Deportivo La Coruna.

Sporting Gijon upset Atletico Madrid 1-0 home, with striker David Barral on target for the victors.

Real Madrid squeezed past Sevilla 1-0 despite going down to 10 men in La Liga on Sunday, while Getafe came from two goals down to beat Almeria.

Needing a win to return to within two points of leaders Barcelona, Real were held goalless in the opening 45 minutes by a dogged Sevilla side.

Tempers flared in the second half and Real found themselves reduced to 10 when centre-back Ricardo Carvalho received a second yellow card just after the hour mark.

But they continued to press for the breakthrough and it eventually came via a moment of magic from Argentina international Angel Di Maria, who beat Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop from an improbable angle on 75 minutes.

Sevilla also finished with 10 men after Mouhamadou Dabo was given a straight red for kicking out at the goal scorer during injury time.

It was a fitting conclusion to a petulant contest that saw 10 players enter the notebook of referee Carlos Gomez.

Real keep pace with Barca at the top of the table, while Sevilla remain 11th.

Elsewhere, Almeria, looking for successive wins for the first time this season after beating Sevilla 3-1 away from home last week, took a two-goal lead early on against visitors Getafe at the Estadio Mediterraneo.

Nigeria international Kalu Uche opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Jose Ulloa made it two on 24 minutes.

But Manu pulled one back for Getafe just four minutes later, and Venezuela international Miku struck to pull the visitors level two minutes into the second half.

The comeback was complete on 69 minutes when Ghanaian Derek Boateng back-heeled the winner past Diego Alves in the Almeria goal.

Getafe have now won four league games in a row to climb to seventh, while Almeria are 17th, clear of the relegation zone on goal difference only.

Tiago struck twice as Atletico Madrid beat Malaga 3-0 away from home.

The Portugal midfielder scored a goal in each half, with Alvaro Dominguez Soto notching the other.

Atletico climb to sixth, while Malaga stay third from bottom.
