Liga Sagres: Portimonense 2 Vitoria Guimaraes 1

Portimonense’s great escape is underway, after the relegation-haunted Liga Sagres club stole an upset win over Vitoria Guimaraes on Friday.

The 2-1 result did not change Portimonense’s position in 15th, but it moved them to within five points of safety ahead of the rest of the weekend’s league matches.

Vitoria Guimaraes appear on track to emulate last season’s sixth-placed finish, and took the lead after midfielder Tiago Targino scored his second goal of the campaign.

But plucky Portimonense drew level when towering defender Andre Pinto nodded home a free kick to delight the home side’s fans just two minutes later.

The dismissal of defender Mahamadou N’Diaye on 80 minutes did little to help Guimaraes’ efforts to reclaim the lead, and they were to let their share of the points slip altogether just two minutes later.

After a free kick clattered off Guimaraes goalkeeper Nilson’s cross bar, Portimonense substitute striker Jorge Pires was the first to react, prodding the ball home from close range to put his side in front.

Not even the 90th-minute dismissal of on-loan Porto striker Daniel Candeias could stop the home side taking full points, with Guimaraes players surrounding referee Pedro Proenca at the final whistle to show their disapproval of his performance.

Guimaraes remain in fifth place but appear likely to slip down the table, with results from the rest of the weekend still to come.

Unbeaten Porto made it nine league wins in a row with a routine 2-0 dismissal of 10-man Vitoria Guimaraes in the Liga Sagres on Saturday.

Falcao was on hand to put the hosts ahead just after the hour, and Guimares conceded a late second goal to Cristian Rodriguez after losing Mahamadou N’Dyiae to second caution in the 87th minute.

Leading scorer Hulk was absent from Porto’s line-up at the Estadio do Dragao, handing Colombian youngster James Rodriguez a chance to impress in his place.

But it was Guimaraes who threatened first, when Porto right-back Fucile dallied and Tiago Targino stole in behind the defence.

But the home side’s goalkeeper Helton was equal to the angled shot, and that was to be as busy as he would be for the first half as Porto soon began to dictate terms.

Falcao went close on six minutes, but his left-foot snap-shot was parried by Guimaraes goalkeeper Nilson.

Maicon should have put Porto in front just one minute later, heading poorly went presented with an almost-empty goalmouth from a free kick.

Uruguay international midfielder Alvaro Pereira shot wide on 28 minutes when a cross might have been a better option, but Guimaraes was able to hold out to the half-time break.

A tepid start to the second period was broken by Falcao on 67 minutes, with the Colombia striker getting on the end of a slide-rule through ball to score his 11th league goal of the season.

Fredy Guarin’s long-range volley was beaten away by Nilson five minutes later as Porto pushed for a second, which they eventually found following N’Dyiae’s sending off.

The build-up was a thing of beauty, as Pereira collected a Guimaraes corner kick at left back and swept a long ball forward that was in turn played on to Rodriguez steaming down the middle.

The Uruguayan midfielder charged into the area, drew Nilson forward and slid in a perfect glance past the goalkeeper to the far post.

Porto improve to an 11-point gap over second-placed Benfica, who will take on Sporting Braga on Sunday.

Liga Sagres: Unioa de Leiria 0 Vitoria Guimaraes 1

A tense 1-0 win has helped Vitoria Guimaraes put valuable breathing space between them and Uniao de Leiria on the Liga Sagres table.

Both sides have performed well this season, with Guimaraes sitting in fifth and just one point above Leiria before kick-off on Friday.

The duo can both dream of earning a Europa League place if they can maintain their good form, though Guimaraes now have a handy four-point buffer on their rivals after Joao Alves’ lone strike handed his side the three points.

On-loan Everton forward Joao Silva had gone close to giving Leiria the lead in the first half when his well-struck shot glanced the wrong side of the upright, but just minutes later the visitors took the lead when Alves’ effort from distance beat Brazilian goalkeeper Eduardo Gottardi.

Guimaraes held on for the win to put them within just one point of third-placed Sporting Lisbon, though the capital club have a game in hand.

Portimonense’s winless run extended to 11 games after they were beaten 4-3 at home by Vitoria Setubal in Friday’s Liga Sagres action.

In a sensational match, an inspired half hour which saw Vitoria score three second-half goals set up the victory that saw them move up to 12th.

Without an away win in the league since August, Vitoria would have been delighted with their start as Claudio Pitbull fired them in front after just 15 minutes.

But Portimonense did not lie down and drew level on 29 minutes when Lito opened his account, just three minutes before Pires gave the hosts a surprise lead.

As the challenges continued to fly in, several players picked up bookings, but Portimonense managed to go into half-time still in front.

An own goal from the hosts’ goalkeeper Hugo Ventura brought Vitoria back into the game and the sending off Joao Paulo just eight minutes into the second half made life more difficult for Portimonense.

Paulo also gave away a penalty with his second booking, which saw Pitbull score his second and put Vitoria in front.

Henrique netted a fourth for the visitors on 77 minutes and although a 90th minute penalty to Portimonense defender Ricardo Pessoa added some credibility to the scoreboard, Vitoria deserved their win in a spiteful clash which also saw seven bookings dished out.
