Arsenal: A day to remember, a day to forget

For the Gunners, a tale of two halves. Or more to the point, a tale of two Arsenals. Unstoppable in the first and scoring at will to take a four to nothing lead. The game signed and sealed. Walcott after 47 seconds, Van Persie with two goals, and Johan Djourou with his maiden goal. Or so anyone sane would think. But this is Arsenal. We can go off the reservation at any time.

No club has as much talent at hand to shoot themselves in the foot so well. The second half devolved into a spineless display of utterly bereft defending as Newcastle found another lever to muscle Arsenal into submission. The price: Four goals going the other way. The result rendered more painful on a day when Wolves, the bottom dwellers stopped the unbeaten run of United with a stirring display of opportunistic scoring and priceless defending.

Much is made of Abou Diaby's departure, reacting badly to a very, very robust challenge by Joey Barton. Wind the clock back five years ago when Dan Smith's foul broke and dislocated Diaby's ankle ending his season and we might be able to see the context of that outburst. Phil Dowd was right giving him the red card but this should have never been the turning point. We made it that way. Slice and dice it any which way but there is no way a 10 man squad would concede a four goal lead. Any description to what transpired beggars belief. How many times are we going to play the blame the referee game?

This match again exposes Wenger's unwillingness to go to a plan B. To be fair who knew they would fold so miserably? Arsenal works on a tight script and when adhered to there is no better team. But there is no team that unravels faster when it has to deviate from the norm. Unsurprisingly, there are those who have successfully exploited this to their advantage. Float set pieces and see the Arsenal defense tie themselves into knots while sneaking one in. Then crowd the middle and watch Arsenal exhaust themselves passing one too many times. Its the rope a dope applied to football.

This however is completely different. Wenger's legacy of spotlighting bright talent is being seriously undermined with his defensive blind spot. One can argue that Johan Djorou going off with an injury and replaced by Sebastien Squillaci was as much of a factor. A Mikael Silvestre clone joining an error prone Koscielny, already sent off twice this season is a recipe for disaster. The duo were already involved in a comedy of errors leading to a Koscielny concussion and a goal by Diomansy Kamara. And this transfer period went without providing decent cover for Thomas Vermelen. It is already proving costly.

I have long said this but Arsenal has no on field leadership. Fabregas is an off and on inspirational presence but lacks the vocal leadership to pull up the collective socks on a consistent basis. The other point is Wenger's built this midfield on ball possession. Ever wonder when that does not work who gets to do ball retrieval? Jack Wilshere. Not Walcott, not Arshavin, not Nasri, not Fabregas, not Rosicky, not Eboue. They just don't have it in them.

Every Arsenal fan should celebrate Wolves pulling off an incredible win over Man Utd because teams like these are breathing life into the title race. We need help because we cannot trust our own team to do it.

Newcastle United 4-4 Arsenal: Premier League Highlights (Video)

What a game. Arsenal thumped Newcastle United in a very one sided first half at St James’ Park in a game that looked effectively over within ten minutes. The travelling Emirates supporters must have thought they were in some sort of dreamland as goals from Theo Walcott, Johann Djourou and Robin Van Persie saw the Gunners go three up in under ten minutes.

Robin Van Persie scored a fourth for the Gunners before the half time whistle saved the Magpies from more of a mauling. The second half was an entirely different game as the Toon Army battled back into the proceedings. The home side were helped by Abou Diaby who foolishly lashed out at Joey Barton and was sent off.

Joey Barton scored a penalty soon after and then Leon Best scored a second to give Newcastle United a lifeline. Then Joey Barton put away another spot kick before Cheick Tioté levelled an amazing game.

Everton v. Arsenal: A Typical Everton game

Once again Everton took to the road to try and earn 3 points against a top side, and once again Everton were denied three points due to a lack of quality in the final third. With Tim Cahill the only missing member of the squad as he is still returning from the final against Japan, Everton showed once again that their biggest weakness is a quality striker.

The game began as a very chirpy affair, with Everton and Arsenal getting called for several fouls within the first few minutes, and Arsenal were the first to be booked in a game that saw Lee Mason hand out 7 yellow cards, the first in the 5th minute to Walcott for a fairly ugly challenge, which was quickly followed up in the 13th minute by a card for Distin. This was certainly not the typical Arsenal game of free flowing football, although there was certainly some beauty in it for stretches. Rather this match felt a bit like a knockdown drag out fight where both teams were giving it everything they had, and in the end Arsenal felt they needed this game just a little bit more.

Of course this would not have been a Lee Mason game without a little bit of controversy, and it manifested itself on Louis Saha’s goal. Seamus Coleman made one of his patented runs into the Arsenal side of the field, and attempted to lob the ball through to Saha. When the ball left Coleman’s foot, Saha was certainly in an offside position, but the linesman failed to raise his flag, and the only real theory as to why is because the ball was deflected by Koscielny. Granted a deflection does not matter, the only way Saha would not have been offside is if Koscielny had gained possession of the ball and passed it back to him, but that certainly did not happen. After the match both managers agreed that the goal should not have stood, but it is certainly nice to see that Everton managed to get a little bit of luck to go their way.

After the goal the Arsenal faithful certainly stood up and made their voices heard, and Arsenal moved down the field to try and equalize before the halftime whistle. Several times the speed of Arsenal was able to beat the strength of Everton’s back line, but the stout goalkeeping of Tim Howard was enough to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net. The halftime whistle was certainly a welcome relief for the Toffees, although it appears David Moyes was not thrilled with some of the comments made by Cesc Fabregas in the tunnel.

Returning from the break this game saw some of the best football, with both sides having several good chances, and finally Arsenal were the benefactors of some luck when a through ball from Fabregas glanced off of Rodwell’s head and directly into the path of Arshavin who placed it past a sprawling Tim Howard. This goal empowered the home side and they finally took the lead in the 75th minute when a corner kick found the head of Koscielny. After that it was merely a matter of Arsenal fending off Everton, although we certainly did nothing to truly test the Arsenal defense.

Billy once again got the start, and he had an excellent game, along with the hair maestro Fellaini. Both of these players were instrumental in helping to blunt the Arsenal attack, and this game could have been much worse without the two. In the defensive end, Sylvian Distin once again had a fantastic game, especially given the speed of Arsenal which is something he has traditionally struggled with. Heitinga once again got the start alongside him, and seemed to do well. I still feel that Jagielka needs to be starting alongside Distin, but hopefully the only reason he is not starting is due to fitness rather than form. This was also an excllent game for Tim Howard, who had several great saves to keep Everton in it, and really had no chance on either of the two goals.

Everton’s next game will be against Blackpool on Saturday at 10 am ET. The previous game between the two resulted in a draw, and Everton need to start picking up points to avoid a relegation battle. Until next time, COYB!

Our young Pole Szczney is officially going to be making his Premier League debut against Manchester United. I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I love Szczesny and think he has performed well this season. Surely our future number one. On the other hand, he’s never played in the Premier League and will make his debut in a huge and important game. He has a ton of confidence, which is fantastic, but there is such a thing as being too confident, especially at his age. Anyway, I hope he puts on the cracking performance I know he’s capable of. He could really make his mark with a great performance today and make Wenger’s job even tougher in deciding what to do with our goalkeeping situation.

Scholes failed a late fitness test so it’s Carrick in the midfield for ManUtd. The other surprise is that there is no Berbatov in the starting eleven. As for our team, Cesc is available, but on the bench for us in case we run into trouble. Rosicky will play in behind Chamakh with Arshavin and Nasri on the flanks. This worked well against Villa in the first half, so let’s hope they can pull off a good performance again today. Djourou is left on the bench, which is disappointing. Squizz and Kos need to be wide awake and have a really good performance. Most importantly, they need to contain Rooney, which is easier said than done.

It’s here. Manchester United v Arsenal at Old Trafford. Looking at ManUtd’s home record and our general record away at OT, the odds don’t seem to favour us much at all. It wouldn’t be a huge blow in terms of our position in the table if we lose, but it could impact our fragile self-confidence. If we win, it could give the team a lift and some more belief. If we can play our game and, most importantly, put away our chances, we could come out of there with a good result. I’m really nervous, so if I’m not commenting much you know it’s because my hands are trembling too much to type. Let’s hope our boys can do the job today.

Come on Arsenal!

1. We're still in 2nd place, 2 points off the top of the table.
2. Manchester United at Old Trafford is one of the toughest fixtures in all of European football. Losing 1-0 there is not the worst result in the world.
3. I thought we had some bright spots: Szczesny played well, I thought Koscielny was very good, Sagna was good, Song was better than he's been in a while, etc. But I don't understand why our offense was so crap, though. We barely put them under any pressure at all.
4. Manchester United plays Chelsea next weekend, and we've got a reeling Stoke side at home. Let's win that and let at least one (and hopefully both) of the other sides drop points there, and be right in the thick of things going into the second half, when we have Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea all at home. We're not out of this yet, not by a long way.

Also, I mean, not to go all Seth and Amy on you . . . but . . . Really? Really Howard Webb? A guy can run into your face and shove you and doesn't even get a yellow? Really? I almost can't believe how blatant it's gotten. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that if that had been Darren Muamba, African player playing for any other club, he would have gotten a red without hesitation. Ugh. Actually I talked to my bro in law, an Argentine who is very objective (very, very) and I told him that I was all sad, he replied, "dude, a one nil as visitors isnt bad at all i MEAN IS BETTER TO WIN OR TO DRAW, BUT ITS NOT BAD" THEN HE POINTED OUT WHAT i READ AROUND HERE, THAT WE STILL HAVE HOME GAMES TO BUG TEAMS, AND CHANCES AS WELL.

So we need to reflect on this, and frankly I still believe that AW is maybe past his time, one key strategy I ve learned is to surprise when you face tough coptetition, and he just doesnt get to that. My guess is he tried to surprise with Chesny, but he got the wrong end, imo.

a couple of thoughts.

I hope Martin admits he was wrong about chamakh. he lost almost every header duel and we have no good crossers in the team.

arshavin is the worst, no defensive cover against nani and useless offensively.

bringing skilled players like van persie on is too late if you are down because man u was all back meaning only ugly goals could be scored. If I was manager

anyways, it is ok, this was an away game against a top team. But I do think skilled players should play early not when the other team is closing down all space possible.

Georgedb1First time I've ever seen a player get up angrily, run at a ref, shove and curse at him because of a call, and remain on the field.... and not to mention not even receive a card. That sums up where the refs were this game... good ole united, treated like champions even when they are not... to win at Old Toilet you have to beat the Manure and take the game out of the ref's hands cuz they will always call against you, and in a tie they will play on until Manure score... sh*t game by both teams, Arsenal obviously intimidated at getting almost no calls and certainly off their passing game....Aserejeexcuses won't get us a title but winning mentality is what the players lackWolffyclichy had one defensive lapse the whole game against Nani and it resulted in a goal. We all read that it was him allowing Song to play outside the role that made him a good player. He said he was not angry at Arsha, he puts Chesny without experience.

He has done excepional economic moves, but their not exceptional "footballistically" speaking.
