Leonardo proud despite title loss

Inter Milan coach Leonardo said his players can be proud of their Serie A season, after rivals AC Milan clinched the title on Saturday.

AC Milan’s 0-0 goalless draw at Roma gave them a nine-point lead over their cross-town adversaries, who have three games still to play, but because of Inter’s inferior head-to-head record their dreams of a sixth successive Scudetto have been thwarted.

But Leonardo, who has engineered a remarkable turnaround in the clubs league fortunes since taking over from Rafael Benitez in December, said his men have nothing to be ashamed of.

“We’re in second place in Serie A, we reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League,” the Brazilian said.

“The year before, we won everything, and we can still win this year’s Coppa Italia.”

“The team is producing consistent results, the players we’ve had at our disposal this season have performed well.”

“We can look at each game, but the general reading of this season can only be a positive one because that’s the reality, that’s where we are today.”

Inter’s season turned in a three-day period in early April, when they were routed 3-0 by Milan in Serie A and then suffered a 5-2 mauling at home against Schalke in the Champions League, a deficit that proved insurmountable in the second leg.

But Leonardo said he was unsure if it was he or his players who should shoulder the blame for those results.

“Games can be won or lost, mistakes can happen, it’s only natural,” he said.

“I don’t know if I can pinpoint one particular mistake, because we are talking with the benefit of hindsight. Of course, we made some errors but we also benefitted from other team’s mistakes, so it’s all subjective.”

“I don’t think the players who played in the derby or against Schalke could have done anything to radically change the results in those games. I don’t think so.”

“But those players were going through a particular moment and they didn’t manage to close the game, or maybe it was me, I don’t know, there are different reasons.”

Inter are now playing for second place with Napoli, who are just one point behind, and they received further bad news ahead of their home clash with Fiorentina on Sunday with influential Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder ruled out with injury.

Grant upbeat despite loss

West Ham boss Avram Grant was in bullish mood when asked about his side’s survival hopes after Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Bolton.

A brace from Daniel Sturridge and another from Chung-Yong Lee were enough to leave West Ham third from the bottom and a point away from safety on the English Premier League table, but Grant played up his side’s hopes of staying in the top flight next season.

“I believe that we will stay in the league,” the Israeli said. “I believe because it?s not what you saw in the first half today.”

“That?s not something that you see every day in our team that was something exceptional.”

“We will show that we can play, we will show also that we can recover and respond to a situation like this, this season and we need to do it in the next six games.”

Grant also paid tribute to Bolton, who he said could play carefree football with their Premier League status not in jeopardy.

“Bolton are not in the relegation zone and they?re not at the top, so they play with freedom and they were trying to play football with a lot of good players and they had nothing to lose,” Grant said.

“We wanted to play different but it was one of those days where everything is going against us.”

“I think even if it?s not looking like it on the pitch sometimes, there is a lot of commitment, they showed it.”

Bolton boss Owen Coyle hailed what he referred to as one of the biggest wins of the season, and said he was looking forward to a productive week on the training pitch ahead of next Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final showdown with Stoke at Wembley.

“It was a great team performance,” Coyle said. “It was obviously important that we got the three points that we were after, but the performance was also exceptionally pleasing.”

“There was also some terrific individual performances and we were backed by an unbelievable crowd all afternoon who were fantastic from start to finish.”

“Every time Daniel Sturridge picked up the ball he lit up the place and Chung-Yong Lee on the right was brilliant all afternoon.”

“But our strength will always be a group and what we bring to the game as a collective unit. We played some slick football and scored some wonderful goals and all in all I thought it was a real free-flowing football game.”

“We now go away ready for a week’s training ahead of what we know will be an exceptionally tough game against a very good Stoke City side.”

Blackburn manager Steve Kean believes he is safe from the sack after a midweek trip to see the club?s Indian owners.

Kean?s future has been questioned after a run of just two points from six games has left Blackburn just one point above the relegation zone.

Rovers have a tough task on Saturday when they visit Arsenal.

“There have been stories about my future, but I’ve been to India and it could not be further from the truth,” Kean said.

“I have a good relationship with the owners and I’m still enjoying it.”

“It was a really good meeting. It always comes around on the 27th or 28th of the month.”

“I get my e-ticket on my phone, get on the plane and get out there.”

“We never discussed anything negative that was putting any pressure on me or the lads.”

But Kean admits that neither he nor the owners are totally happy with how things have progressed since he succeeded Sam Allardyce as manager.

“We talked a bit a bit about the last month and about where we are in the table,” he said.

“We’d like to be higher but we’re only two points further back than we were this time last year”

“They’ve watched the games live and they can see there’s a determination and a fight.

“They know that’s a quality you need at this stage because it’s so tight.”

“We’re all fairly comfortable with the way things are progressing but I know we have to get the points and we have to get them quickly.”

“Relegation was not discussed, not at all. If it happened to any club there’s a massive financial implication but we haven’t discussed that.”

Blackburn will be without defender Vince Grella (Achilles) for the season and midfielders Keith Andrews (groin) and playmaker David Dunn (hip) for the trip to the Emirates.

Trapattoni happy despite loss to Uruguay

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has praised his side’s gallant second-half display in its 3-2 loss to Uruguay.

“I was very, very happy with our performance after half-time,” Trapattoni told Sky Sports. “We recovered very well in the second half, we played with good personality.”

“We played well. We had a good direction.”

Trapattoni also praised Reading striker Shane Long. He deputised for Robbie Keane, scoring a headed equaliser in the 16th minute and was a standout performer against the South Americans.

“If I was the manager of a club, I would look out for him. He is maturing and he is strong and if he was playing in the Premier League, he would get even better,” Trapattoni told the Daily Mail.

“A year ago Long was still young but he is growing, and he has become a very important player for us. The other managers must have seen him now.”

“It is a mystery for myself and Marco (Tardelli) that more of our players are not in the Premier League.”

Levein optimistic despite 2-0 loss

Scotland boss Craig Levein has praised his players for going down fighting in their 2-0 friendly loss to Brazil at the Emirates on Sunday.

Cannavaro still upbeat despite stalemate

Napoli skipper Paolo Cannavaro believes his side can still have a successful season despite an unexpected draw against Brescia on Sunday.

The Naples club kept their eighth successive clean sheet at the Stadio San Paolo in the Serie A but were unable to find the back of the net and were forced to share the spoils with the strugglers, who sit 19th in the league.

The 0-0 result leaves Napoli in third and eight points behind table-toppers AC Milan, but Cannavaro says his side need to stay relaxed.

“In the first half we played as the coach wanted us to play, then we got nervous because we couldn’t score,” Cannavaro said, before admitting his side were perhaps lucky to come away with a point.

“At the end we risked a lot and there was too much movement and action from Brescia. We were a bit lucky but their actions came from our mistakes, because we were playing very high up the pitch.”

“We need to stay calm and keep believing we can still do great things.”

Cannavaro admitted the side missed suspended striker Ezequiel Lavezzi, and that he is looking forward to the Argentine returning to action.

“Well, El Pojo (Ezequiel Lavezzi) is a very important player, we know it, but we have also won matches without him and we cannot depend on a single player,” he said.

“Of course in a match like the one we played today he could have been useful and could have scored a goal. Luckily enough, he will be back on Sunday.”

Lavezzi’s return will come at Parma on Sunday, with Napoli needing a victory to keep ahead of fourth-placed Lazio.

Positives to take from derby for Liverpool, despite draw

In the end honours were even in the Merseyside derby as Liverpool and Everton drew 2-2 at Anfield.

It wasn’t your typical Merseyside derby as the game was more open affair than usual. It made for a fascinating end to end game.

Both sides should take credit for trying to win the game and for the neutral it must have been a fantastic watch.

However as an Everton fan my nerves were jangling throughout, as usual for a Merseyside derby.

Positives

This might seem strange but I would like to look at the positives that Liverpool and boss Kenny Dalglish should take from the game. On his return to the Anfield dugout after a 20 year absence his team were brighter than in previous games.

Heart

Kenny Dalglish’s return to Liverpool seems to have given everybody at the club the lift they needed. He is of course a club legend and the fans seem to have a new spring in their step since his appointment.

The players have reacted to his appointment as well and seem to be working harder for the Scot. Former-boss Roy Hodgson must be wondering why they couldn’t work this hard for him. That extra effort will be important in the coming months as the club try to climb the Premier League table.

Half

Liverpool had the better of the first half and probably should have gone in at half-time with a bigger lead. They looked the more dangerous up front and it looked like they could go on to control the game in the second half.

However like against Blackpool in midweek Liverpool came out and made a sluggish start to the second half and Everton punished them with two early goals. To their credit though they came back and managed to find an equaliser.

Torres

Spanish striker Fernando Torres has been heavily criticised for his poor form this season, in recent games though he is starting to look like the deadly marksman of old. In the first half he caused Everton centre-backs Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga all sorts of problems.

He looked like he wants to play the game again unlike in the days of Roy Hodgson’s reign when he looked uninterested and unfit.

He was also unlucky not to add a goal to his performance, as he hit Tim Howard’s post. It’s vital for Liverpool that Torres continues this revival because he is one of the few players in the Liverpool team capable of inspiring victory. If Torres can continue in this vein then Liverpool should move up the table very quickly.

Early

It’s still early days for Kenny Dalglish as manager. He has improved the performances of the club in just three games in charge. Yet he has lost two and drew one but most of the players are showing that they now want to play for the club.

Youngsters

Another positive for Dalglish is the use of the youngsters such as Martin Kelly, Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing. Dalglish has worked at the Liverpool academy so he knows what the likes of Kelly and Spearing are capable of.

Kelly and Spearing started yesterday’s derby and neither of them let their boss down. Kelly looks like a good prospect for the future and with regular right-back Glen Johnson being in poor form this season could get a good run in the starting line-up. Dalglish has even switched Johnson to left-back in recent games to accommodate Kelly’s inclusion at right-back.

Work

Despite the positives Kenny Dalglish can take from this game he will know that he still has his work cut-out to turn Liverpool’s season around. And he may not get any transfer funds to spend in this transfer window, so he will have to try and get everything he can out of his current group of players.

Dalglish has halted the short losing run Liverpool have been on in recent games but he will be hoping that the Reds get back to winning ways sooner rather than later or they could be in big trouble come May.

Another positive for Dalglish is the use of the youngsters such as Martin Kelly, Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing. Dalglish has worked at the Liverpool academy so he knows what the likes of Kelly and Spearing are capable of.

Kelly and Spearing started yesterday’s derby and neither of them let their boss down. Kelly looks like a good prospect for the future and with regular right-back Glen Johnson being in poor form this season could get a good run in the starting line-up. Dalglish has even switched Johnson to left-back in recent games to accommodate Kelly’s inclusion at right-back.

Despite the positives Kenny Dalglish can take from this game he will know that he still has his work cut-out to turn Liverpool’s season around. And he may not get any transfer funds to spend in this transfer window, so he will have to try and get everything he can out of his current group of players.

Dalglish has halted the short losing run Liverpool have been on in recent games but he will be hoping that the Reds get back to winning ways sooner rather than later or they could be in big trouble come May.
