Three points the aim for Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester United are treating their midweek Champions League clash with Otelul Galati as a must-win encounter.

The Red Devils shaded the Romanian club in the reverse fixture 2-0 a fortnight ago thanks to two Wayne Rooney penalties, but Ferguson is not taking Wednesday’s clash at Old Trafford lightly.

“We have to win on Wednesday, without doubt,” Ferguson told United’s official website.

“We’re at home and I expect us to win and, if we do that, (qualification) is in our hands when we play Benfica at home.”

“We’ll hopefully win our game and, when we play Benfica at home, it’ll be the decider in our section.”

United sit in second place in the Group C standings, two points behind leaders Benfica who play Basel in the other fixture.

And Ferguson is not content with merely qualifying for the knockout stages, underlining the importance of winning the group to avoid some of Europe’s biggest clubs in the next round.

“It’s always better to finish first than second,” Ferguson said.

“After getting the first result against Galati and then playing them again at home, we’ll hopefully go into the Benfica game with eight points. That will be an important match.”

In other matches, Emilio Renteria’s second-half penalty rescued a point for Columbus Crew in a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders while the Chicago Fire and the Vancouver Whitecaps played out a goalless draw.

There were two other 0-0 draws on Saturday, with both the New England Revolution and the Colorado Rapids and DC United and Dallas failing to find the back of the net.

Real Salt Lake beat Chivas USA 1-0 with Will Johnson scoring three minutes from time.

Guardiola: We need four more points

Pep Guardiola has declared Barcelona need four more points to secure the La Liga title as his side prepares to face cross-town rivals Espanyol.

Barcelona lead second-placed Real Madrid by eight points with four matches remaining.

A loss for Real against Sevilla on Saturday could mean Barcelona could claim the title with a win against Espanyol on Sunday, but Guardiola said he was not focusing on other results.

Ligue 1 wrap: Lost points for Marseille, Lyon

Marseille squandered a chance to go top of Ligue 1 after being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Auxerre on Sunday.

The hosts had taken the lead early in the second half but were pegged back 13 minutes before the end, leaving Lille one point clear at the top with five games remaining.

Midfielder Mathieu Valbuena struck in the 56th minute to give Marseille the lead, but just as it looked as though victory was theirs, South Korean striker Jung Jo-Gook found the back of the net.

The draw moved Auxerre into 14th, just one point clear of 18th-placed Nancy in a congested bottom half.

Lyon missed their chance to maintain the pressure on the top two after suffering a surprise 2-0 loss at Toulouse.

Claude Puel’s side finished the encounter with nine men, but conceding a goal in each half left their third-place under pressure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Toulouse defender Mauro Cetto opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Lyon were not without hope at the break.

That changed when Brazilian Michel Bastos was given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards.

Full-back Aly Cissokho put the ball in his own net on 68 minutes to make the possibility of a positive result almost impossible for the 10-man Lyon.

It proved just that and Cissokho was given a straight red card four minutes from time as his team remain ahead of PSG on goal difference.

Toulouse move into 11th after the win saw them break a five-game winless run.

Caen moved out of the relegation zone with a resounding 4-0 thrashing of Nice.

First-half goals from Romain Hamouma and Yohan Mollo put Caen on the front foot and when Nice’s Argentine defender Renato Civelli was sent off on the stroke of half time, the game was all but over.

It took until the 89th minute to seal the points as Hamouma completed his brace and Youssef El-Arabi also got in on the act in stoppage time.

Caen move into 15th while Nice slip to 16th, but both remain just one point clear of the relegation zone.

In the day’s other game, Montpellier and Brest played out a scoreless draw at the Stade de la Mosson.

Schalke get points for abandoned game

Bundesliga officials have awarded Schalke the full points for Friday’s abandoned match against St Pauli.

The game was abandoned two minutes from regular time with Schalke leading 2-0 after a plastic beer mug was thrown at a match official.

Security staff had to use umbrellas to shelter players and officials from missiles as they made their way from the pitch.

“We expected this decision,” Schalke’s sports director Horst Heldt said. “We are happy that we have now officially won.”

The decision to hand Schalke the win sees them move into tenth on the table, while relegation-battlers St Pauli drop to 17th on the standings.

Three points satisfy Blanc

Laurent Blanc was content with France’s 2-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Luxembourg, despite a lacklustre attacking display from Les Bleus.

But we must make a comprehensive analysis,” Blanc said.”In saying that, we lacked consistency, but there was little space against Luxembourg.”The match was the first game back for Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra after their controversial suspension in the wake of France’s disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign, and Blanc was pleased with the influence of both.”They took a tentative start. They then gradually got into the match. They did a good job and there is a chance to see them stay with us. They actually are part of the France group,” he said.Ribery paid tribute to the fighting spirit of Luxembourg and said he was relieved to have gotten through the match.”It was not an easy game, but the win was the main thing,” he said.”It was nice to play the full 90 minutes, but the main thing is to work well.”

How many points will Wolves need?

9 more Premier League games to go in the 2010/11 season for Wolves and it’s all very tight still at the bottom of the league. Virtually half the teams in the league remain threatened with the drop and I am sure supporters of each of those teams will be wondering how many more points there team will need from the run in to still be playing in the top flight next season.

Lets look at the games remaining for the bottom 9 teams, and that brings in Stoke, Villa, Blackburn, Blackpool, Albion, Blues, West Ham, Wolves and Wigan.

Stoke will probably be ok but they have the distraction of a Cup Semi Final and a none too easy run in. They have home games against Newcastle, Chelsea, Wolves, Arsenal and Wigan. Lets give them 7 points from those. And away games at Spurs, Villa, Blackpool and Man City. 3 points maybe from those. So ten more points on top of the 34 they already have, so 44 will be plenty.

Villa are probably too good to go down. Their home games are Wolves, Newcastle, Stoke, Wigan and Liverpool. 8 points from those. And away games at Everton, West Ham, Albion and Arsenal. They can probably find one win from those so 11 more points would take them to 44 also.

Blackburn have home games against Blackpool, Birmingham, Man City, Bolton and Man Utd. I will give them 6 points for those but that might be being generous. Their away games are at Arsenal, Everton, West Ham and Wolves. I don’t think they will win any of those so I reckon they will get maybe 7 more points in total taking them to 39.

Blackpool have home games against Arsenal, Newcastle, Wigan, Stoke and Bolton. Like most people I have been underestimating what Blackpool can achieve for most of the season, so I will give them 7 points from those. The away games are at Blackburn, Fulham, Spurs and Man Utd. Can’t see them winning any of those so I will estimate 8 more points overall to take them to 40.

Our good friends the Albion have home games to come against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Villa and  Everton. No easy ones there and I will give them 5 points. They have to travel to Sunderland, Spurs, Wolves and Newcastle. Lets be generous and say they will win one of those (I dread to think which one) so they can get 8 more points to take them to 40.

Birmingham have won a cup but can they stay up? They have a game in hand on the other teams in the bottom half but have only 4 home games left against Bolton, Sunderland, Wolves and Fulham. They will need a couple of wins so lets give them 7 points. 6 away games are at Wigan, Blackburn, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs. They could get 4 points from those so lets say they can get 11 points from 10 games and that would take them to 42 and safety.

West Ham have 4 home games left against Man Utd, Villa, Blackburn and Sunderland. They can win a couple of those for 6 or 7 points. Their away games are at Spurs, Bolton, Chelsea, Man City and Wigan. I can’t see them getting much more than 3 points from those so we will be generous and give them 10 more points to end up on 41.

Wigan also have only 4 left at home and meet Birmingham, Spurs, Everton and West Ham. A good run in could see them get 7 points. Their away games are at Chelsea, Blackpool, Sunderland, Villa and Stoke. All told thats not  a bad run in and they could get 5 or 6 points away. So lets give them 12 from the last 9 games (which is generous compared to what they have done all season) and that would see them end on 39.

So my conclusion from all that is that Blackburn, Blackpool, Albion and Wigan are all going to be hovering around 40 points come the end of the season so I reckon that 41 points will be enough to survive. That gives Wolves a target of 12 points from 9 games.

Wolves have just 4 home games left and it’s the home form that has kept them in contention all season. They have matches at Molineux against Everton, Fulham, Albion and Blackburn. I think they will get 7 points from those. That leaves 5 away games at Villa, Newcastle, Stoke, Birmingham and Sunderland. They need to find a win in one of those and they have only won one on the road all season. My unbiased view is that we could end on 40 points too!

As if we didn’t know it, it’s going to be very close. And goal difference may well settle it. Wigan have by far the worst goal difference and at the moment Blackburn the best of the 5 contenders. As for Wolves, Albion and Blackpool they are all currently showing a goal difference of -15.

Wish I hadn’t written this article. I suddenly feel very stressed.

Pompey 1-0 Barnsley: King Kanu crowns Pompey another crucial three points

Nwankwo Kanu’s late strike gave Pompey another much needed three points in their nPower Championship tie against Barnsley at Fratton Park.

Greg Halford’s free-kick was headed home by Kanu, who had come on as a substitute for Joel Ward after 70 minutes.

And the goal means that the Blues’ second crucial win in as many weeks sees them leap to 16th in the Championship table, and are now nine points clear of the relegation zone after more favourable results were recorded by the teams around them.

The visitors were restricted to just three efforts on goal, all of which were off target, as Pompey enjoyed a slight majority in possession.

Steve Cotterill started with new loan signing and namesake David Cotterill in midfield and Aaron Mokoena on the bench despite his work permit being renewed before the game.

The visitors also handed their new boy a debut with Paul McShane, on loan from Hull, at centre back. And it was they who started brighter with Danny Haynes flashing a shot over the bar.

A response was soon forthcoming from Pompey though as Luke Steele was forced to tip David Nugent’s shot around the post.

Dave Kitson also threatened, having previosuly been tipped by his manager to get back amongst the goals soon, his shot wide of the left hand post followed by a headed effort sent over the bar showed that may be coming true after his brave headed goal last week.

Haynes tried his luck again to no avail, before Pompey were forced to withdraw Liam Lawrence on 40 minutes, replacing him with Mokoena and changing the Blues’ shape.

Frank Nouble nodded wide for Barnsley and Mokoena shot over before referee Roger Easy blew for half-time.

Mr East was a far busier man in the second half as the game became very scrappy with both sides in need of three points.

McShane and Haynes both went into the book before the hour mark as Kitson again forced Steele into action.

Hermann Hreidarsson joined the Barnsley duo in the referee’s notebook as Cotterill continued a regular supply of crosses, without any team mates finding a finish.

And as Barnsley boss Mark Robins made a double change as Kanu was introduced by Steve Cotterill in an attempt to break the deadlock.

Pompey had to withstand a spell of pressure from the visitors though with Keiran Trippier sending in deliveries from the wing which were dealt with by Jamie Ashdown and Ricardo Rocha as both Ritchie De Laet and Kitson were both booked.
