Injured Theo Walcott ruled out of Poland clash

England forward Theo Walcott has been ruled out of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Poland with a chest injury.

The Arsenal player was taken to hospital after a bruising challenge from San Marino's goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini in the opening minutes of a 5-0 win on Friday and scans confirmed he must return to his club for further treatment.

The Football Association are yet to reveal the full extent of the injury, but England manager Roy Hodgson suggested after the game that Walcott had suffered a worrying problem.

"I don't think it is going to be good," he said.

"He is in hospital overnight. We can only hope it is bad bruising but he was pretty badly beaten up."

Aaron Lennon came on for Walcott at Wembley and Hodgson is unlikely to call-up a replacement wide-man as Adam Johnson is also in the squad.

England's medical staff will assess midfielder Frank Lampard's knee injury on Sunday and check on full-back Ryan Bertrand, who missed the San Marino match with a virus.

Belgian First Division wrap: Anderlecht, Genk suffer surprise losses

Club Brugge beat Anderlecht and Standard Liege defeated Genk as the top two both lost in the Belgian First Division playoffs.

Karel Geraerts put Brugge ahead after just four minutes of the Playoff I match at the Jan Breydelstadion.

The hosts doubled their advantage through an own goal from Anderlecht’s Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic four minutes before half-time.

And it was 3-0 on 55 minutes courtesy of a strike from Nigeria international striker Joseph Akpala.

Anderlecht finished with 10 men after Argentine Matias Suarez received his second yellow card with 20 minutes to go.

In Sunday’s other Playoff I match, Standard Liege came from a goal down with four minutes remaining to beat group leaders Genk 2-1.

Visitors Genk led through a goal from Hungarian midfielder Daniel Tozser in the 68th minute at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

The hosts leveled courtesy of an Axel Witzel penalty on 86 minutes, before Cameroonian forward Aloys Nong found the net in the 90th minute to snatch the win for Liege.

Genk and Anderlecht remain first and second in the Champions League qualification places, with Liege third in the automatic Europa League qualification berth and Club Brugge fourth.

In Playoff I, Group B leaders Westerlo came from behind to draw 1-1 away to Zulte-Waregem.

Striker Mahamadou Habibou put hosts Zulte ahead in the 39th minute at Regenboogstadion.

But the visitors leveled six minutes into the second half thanks to Brazilian Paulo Henrique.

Westerlo remain top of Group B, level on points with Germinal Beerschot and with the right to play off for a Europa League qualification spot at stake.

Copa Libertadores wrap: Velez keep hopes alive, Leon suffer setback

Velez Sarsfield won a bruising Copa Libertadores clash with Union Espanola on Thursday, while Leon de Huanuco’s campaign is all but over.

Qualifying for the continental tournament through their second placing in the Apertura of the 2010 Argentine Primera Division season, Velez Sarsfield needed a win at home to keep them in touch with Group 4 leaders Universidad Catolica.Ricardo Gareca’s men duly delivered with a 2-1 result against Union Espanola, elevating them to second in the group standings.Defender Emiliano Papa opened the scoring for the home side, lashing in the rebound on 23 minutes after a close-range effort from striker Santiago Silva had been blocked by Union goalkeeper Eduardo Lobos.But the lead lasted just 11 minutes, with the Chilean outfit equalising when defender Leandro Delgado beat the off-side trap to flick his header past Velez shot-stopper Marcelo Barovero.Having gone close in the build-up to the opener, Uruguayan Silva did not leave empty handed when he nodded home in the 69th minute after Maximiliano Moralez’s cross into the area was sent back across the face of goal.Velez survived several desperate attacks as the clock wound down, and could also be considered lucky not to have accumulated more than three yellow cards after a handful of robust challenges went unpunished by Brazilian referee Salvio Spinola Fagundes Filho.Union drop to bottom of Group 4, but are just three points from fellow Chilean side Universidad in the standings, with two games remaining.Bolivian club Oriente Petrolero hopes of progressing beyond the competition’s group stages are well over, but they provided a hammer blow to Peruvian outfit Leon de Huanuco’s own campaign with a 2-0 win at home.Alcides Pena’s 17th-minute opener was complemented by a 78th-minute sealer from Bolivian international midfielder Jhasmany Carlos, handing Oriente their first points of the stage.The result leaves Leon de Huanuco three points and goal difference from second-placed Gremio on the Group 2 table, with the Brazilian club possessing a game in hand. Wales suffer Bale setback

Wales have suffered a major blow with the news that Gareth Bale will miss Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against England.

Bale, 21, has been forced to withdraw from the squad for the Group G match at the Millennium Stadium due to a hamstring problem.

The left-sided winger is believed to have been carrying the issue since playing for English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur against West Ham United last Saturday.

It was his first full 90 minutes since returning from a back injury suffered in January.”Due to a hamstring problem, Gareth Bale has had to withdraw from the Wales squad to face England on Saturday,” the Football Association of Wales said in a statement.

“He felt tight last week during training with his club. After playing 90 minutes on Saturday he felt some muscle tightness.”

“Initially, this was expected to be muscle soreness after playing his first game.”

“On joining up with the Welsh squad he was kept off his feet in training for two days to recover.”

“As he still felt tight in the warm-up on Tuesday, Gareth was pulled out of the session. He did not train at all on Wednesday and was sent for a scan. The scan revealed that Gareth Bale picked up his injury last week.

“The loss of Bale will be keenly felt by Gary Speed’s young team. Wales are bottom of the group after suffering three losses from three matches played so far in their qualification campaign.

Bale has returned to Tottenham for further assessment. He is expected to be fit for Spurs’ next match away to Wigan Athletic on April 2, as well as the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid three days later.

Wales suffer Bale setback

Eredivisie league leaders PSV Eindhoven gave the chasing pack something to cheer about on Saturday, slipping to a 1-0 home defeat to ADO Den Haag.

VVV Venlo remain entrenched in the relegation zone despite cruising to a 3-0 win over 10th-placed NAC Breda, while Heerenveen and NEC Nijmegen played out a goalless draw at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

City suffer Balotelli blow

Mario Balotelli’s injury woes continue with the Manchester City striker ruled out for a month because of a knee injury.

After signing for Roberto Mancini’s side for 24-million-pounds in August, the Italian international has struggled to get on the park for City, with knee surgery and suspension restricting him to just 11 appearances in all competitions.

His latest setback could keep him out for up to four weeks, and manager Mancini admits he is concerned about his star.

“I’m worried because he can’t play for another three or four weeks at an important moment for us,” said Mancini.

“To have an operation done and then to have another problem two months later is strange.”

“He may need surgery. We just don’t know. He must rest, then he will have treatment and work. Hopefully then he will be OK.”

Fortunately for Mancini he has a ready-made replacement for Balotelli in the form of new 27-million-pound signing Edin Dzeko, who was unveiled by the club on Tuesday and is expected to face Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.
