Capello insists Jagielka is fit to face Spain

Phil Jagielka has told England boss Fabio Capello that he is ready to play against Spain despite a broken toe.

The Everton midfielder was believed to have needed a painkilling injection to play against Newcastle in the English Premier League on Saturday.

However, the England international trained on Friday without any problems and told his manager that he was fit to face the world and European champions in the international friendly.

“I spoke with him and asked him, and he said he was ready, he’s okay. He said: ‘If you decide, I’m ready to play’,” Capello said.

“He trained normally without an injection. He will decide whether he takes an injection. He will decide.”

“The player told me, yes. Two things: before deciding about a player, I always speak with the doctors.”

“I ask the doctor whether they can play or not. He says he can. Then I speak always with the player. You can play? You are 100 percent? Not 90 percent, but 100 percent? You are ready? He said yes.”

“After that I decided to put the players on the pitch. I will decide, but I asked the player to be clear. The player said: ‘Yes, I want to play’. I didn’t say: ‘You must play’. That’s a big difference. Okay, clear? We need to be clear.”

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard believes preventing Spain’s Xavi and Andres Iniesta dominating the clash will be England’s toughest obstacle.

Lampard has seen a return to form this season with a series of impressive performances and goals for Chelsea.

The 33-year-old will replace John Terry as captain in the weekend’s game and believes Xavi is his side’s biggest threat.

“It’s hard to pick one, but if I had to I’d go with Xavi, given what he’s done over such a period of time,” Lampard said.

“Andres Iniesta is a fantastic player and to compare and split them up is impossible, but Xavi is the centre of their team. He’s the pinnacle of their team. He moves the ball.”

“I’ve played against him countless times coming through the ranks and over the years. His ability and his awareness and his touch are something special.”

“He’s one of the all-time greats and, in the last couple of years, he’s secured himself up there.”

The Chelsea star believes that his side must approach the game with confidence and not feel intimidated by Spain’s plethora of superstars.

“You have to believe in yourselves and see their weaknesses. We have to win the ball back from them and get our front men away and use the pace in our team,” he said.

“I watched them play Scotland and they pretty much dominated, but Scotland created chances against them now and again. With the ability we have in our team, on the counter-attack and in our own play. We must be bold, we have to stand up.”

“It’s a case of having to close them down as well as you can, don’t let them [Xavi and Iniesta] dominate games as Spain and Barcelona do so often. Get tight to them. It’s probably the most difficult job in football at the minute.”

“We’d seen them play a lot of teams who’d try to play their style against them, which is impossible. They’re the best at it. They’d try to press them right up the pitch and win the ball back.”

Redknapp´s torrid night in Spain

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has rued the series of events that led to his side’s forgettable 4-0 loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

It was a torrid evening in Madrid for the Spurs in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Real, who had to contend with the late withdrawal of winger Aaron Lennon and the sending off of striker Peter Crouch early in the first half.

“We lost Aaron Lennon a minute before kick-off. As we were walking to the pitch he didn’t feel very well and he said he had no energy,” Redknapp said.

“I had to make a change as we were leaving the dressing room. Then we went a goal down and had Crouchy sent off. ”

“In the first half I thought we did ever so well, we had a couple of good chances. But in the end, it’s difficult to come here with 11 men, never mind play with 10 men for almost 80 minutes.”

Redknapp lamented the sending off, as well as the injury problems that beset the side.

“I haven’t seen it. (Crouch) is the most inoffensive footballer you’ve ever seen. He’s not one for making rash challenges. I don’t know if he has lunged in for the second one, but it has cost us dearly,” he said.

“It’s just what we didn’t need, to have 10 men here against a team like this. We then ended up losing our right-back (Vedran Corluka to injury) and Gareth (Bale) gets cramp. Is he fit, isn’t he fit? It was difficult.”

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho conceded it was always going to be tough for Redknapp’s men after Crouch’s dismissal, describing the task ahead of 10-man Tottenham as ‘mission impossible’.

“Eleven against 10 at Champions League level – it’s always mission impossible,” the Portuguese said.

“I played Barcelona against Chelsea with 10, impossible; I played with Inter against Barcelona with 10 men – impossible. Arsenal played with 10 men against Barcelona a few weeks ago. It’s impossible.”

“It’s just a question of the team with 11 keeping concentration, keeping a high tempo, not letting their opponents breathe, not letting their opponents have the ball and we did that in the second half, not in the first half.’

Despite the convincing scoreline, Mourinho is refusing to claim victory just yet. He insisted the fighting qualities of English sides meant the tie was far from over.

“Not yet (the match is not over). You know that I know English football well, I know English mentality. I know White Hart Lane,” he said.

“It is not over. For you (English) it is not over. In other cultures I would say yes but in England they have belief until the last minute so it is not over.”

Spain invited To Play In The Copa America As Japan Pull Out

The World and European champions Spain have been asked to replace Japan in the Copa America this summer.

This opens up the possibility of the number one nation playing Argentina and Brazil in competitive fixtures.

Japan have withdrawn because of the earthquake and tsunami which destroyed the east coast of the country.

The tournament contains the 10 members of the Conmebol federation plus two other countries from other associations, usually Mexico and the USA.

But Japan’s late withdrawal has opened up the possibility of Spain entering and being in a group with the hosts Argentina, Bolivia and Colombia.

But the Spanish soccer federation president Angel Maria Villar will have to pass it by the board as there will be a number of administration difficulties.

“Yesterday we received the official invitation, and we don’t rule it out,” Villar said at an event in Barcelona, according to local media.

“Next week or the week after we will determine at a meeting of the board of directors whether we will accept the invitation.

“I don’t rule anything out when the request is made with affection and love, but at the same time taking into account the difficulties,” he added.

“That doesn’t mean we are going or not, but as president I have the obligation to take it to the board.”

Euro 2012 Group I: Spain wins fifth straight

Spain virtually secured their place at the Euro 2012 finals with a 3-1 win over Lithuania in Group I on Tuesday.

The world champions maintained their 100 per cent record with their fifth win but they did not have it all their own way.

Xavi’s deflected shot opened the scoring, before Marius Stankevicius levelled for the home side, but an own goal from Tadas Kijanskas and a strike from Juan Mata helped Vicente del Bosque’s side into a commanding position in Group I.

The first 20 minutes belonged to the world champions, and it was no surprise when they broke the resistance of the hosts.

Villa, looking lively after his double on Friday against the Czech Republic, combined with his Barcelona teammate Xavi, and the midfielder’s shot looped off the body of Andrius Skerla and flew into the net.

But the hosts struck a stunning equaliser on 57 minutes.

Indecisive defending from Raul Albiol saw the ball loop into the area, and Valencia’s Marius Stankevicius launched an unstoppable low shot that flew past Iker Casillas and into the corner.

Just as Lithuania began to asset their authority, Spain regained the lead.

Xavi’s through pass found Juan Mata on the left, and his ball across the area looked for Llorente, but instead found the shin of the unfortunate Kijanskas, with his clearance flying into his own net.

The tournament holders sealed the win thanks to the move of the match. Xavi and Silva combined to play in Mata, and he calmly rolled the ball into the net.The Czech Republic recorded their third victory with a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Veteran striker Milan Baros opened the scoring after three minutes when he produced a convincing finish after being played through by captain Tomas Rosicky.

It was the Galatasaray striker’s 39th international goal.

Coming into the game having lost all of their qualifiers for next year’s finals in Poland and Ukraine, Liechtenstein were fortunate to be only 1-0 down at the break after the Czech Republic’s Jan Moravek saw his powerful close-range shot rebound off the bar.

But the Czechs did manage to add to their slender lead with 20 minutes remaining when defender Michal Kadlec rose highest in the penalty area to head home.

Euro 2012 qualifying preview: Spain, Holland in action

Spain have a tricky trip to Lithuania, while the Netherlands are firm favourites against Hungary as a host of countries meet in Euro 2012 qualifying on Tuesday.

Lithuania have it all before them when they take on reigning European and world champions Spain, though they do have the benefit of home advantage.Sitting fourth in Group I on four points with a game in hand on their rivals, Raimondas Zutautas’ men can prove their worth against a team wielding the likes of Fernando Torres, David Villa, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.Spain have won all four of their qualifying encounters, scoring 12 and shipping four goals, including a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Czech Republic on Friday courtesy of two Villa goals.Lithuania are also a country in form however, after they accounted for Poland 2-0 with goals to Saulius Mikoliunas and Edgaras Cesnauskis. The game is scheduled to take place at the S. Dariaus ir S. Gireno stadionas in Kaunas, but all the build-up has been about the state of the pitch after Spain expressed their concern at the standard of the surface. The Netherlands can make it six points in four days against Hungary on Tuesday when they meet in their reverse fixture at the Amsterdam Arena. The Dutch hammered four goals – from Rafael van der Vaart, Ibrahim Afellay, Dirk Kuyt and Robin van Persie – past the Hungarian defence in Budapest, and there could be more pain to come for Sandor Egervari’s side.Despite the thrashing, Hungary are in second place in Group E and three points clear of Sweden, but the latter have two games in hand.Sweden can make inroads into their deficit into Hungary’s advantage when they host Moldova at the Rasundastadion in Solna. The Czech Republic can get back to winning ways after a gallant loss to Spain on Friday, when they welcome strugglers Liechtenstein in their Group I clash at the Fotbalovy stadion Strelecky ostrov in Ceske Budejovice.Georgia will be out to protect their unbeaten Euro qualifying campaign when they take on Israel at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv in Group F.Turkey host Austria in their Group A affair, with second spot up for grabs for the victor.Romania and Luxembourg face off in a battle of the Group D strugglers, with the two countries sharing just three points between them in their collective nine qualifying encounters.Estonia will welcome Serbia to the A Le Coq Arena for their Group C clash, fresh from a 2-0 friendly victory over Uruguay – the Baltic state’s first win since beating the Serbs 3-1 in the reverse Euro 2012 qualifier in October.A win to either side would help break the congestion on the group table, with four nations from second place to fifth split by just two points. The other two countries involved in the mid-table jam are Northern Ireland and Slovenia, and they will also do battle on Tuesday at Windsor Park in Belfast.Belgium host Azerbaijan in their Group A match in Brussels.

Euro 2012 preview: Lithuania v Spain

Concerns over the pitch in Kaunas have marred the build-up to the clash between Spain and Lithuania in their Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday.

The world champions make the trip to Eastern Europe looking to maintain their perfect record in Group I, although the match may not even go ahead unless the pitch improves in the build-up to the match.Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta dubbed the pitch at the S.Darius and S.Girenas Stadium as ‘not the best’, but says his side will be ready to play.”From the pictures we have seen it reminds me of the dirt pitches we used to play on when we were young,” Iniesta told reporters on Sunday.”Whether to play or not isn’t our decision, that’s up to the referee and UEFA. Obviously they aren’t the best conditions, but if we have to play we will be ready to do so.”Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa also voiced his discontent with the pitch, while reports in AS indicate that Spain may ask UEFA to investigate the pitch before the match.”We hope the pitch improves over the next few days so we will be able to play. What worries us is that there could be injuries and this would be dangerous,” Arbeloa said.If the match does go ahead, Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup champions Spain will be short favourites. But Lithuania believe they have a chance and are heading into the match with confidence after a 2-0 friendly victory over Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland on Friday.”You have to believe, otherwise you’ll never win,” Lithuania manager Raimondas Zutautas said.”There is no need to motivate the men. Everyone knows they are playing the champions.”"The key will be to break down Spain’s play because if we give them possession easily, it’ll be extremely difficult.”Lithuanian defender Marius Stankevicius, who plies his trade at club level with Valencia in Spain’s La Liga, believes that the ‘nothing to lose’ mentality will help his side. Like Iniesta and Arbeloa, however, he also expressed his disappointment with the pitch.”I am sad about the conditions in which we are receiving teams such as Poland and Spain. It’s a shame for Lithuania,” Stankevicius said.Stankevicius will need to be at his best if his side are to claim an unlikely point, with Barcelona striker David Villa just one of the attacking threats Lithuania will need to combat.Villa netted a brace in Friday’s 2-1 win over the Czech Republic, elevating him past Raul as the country’s leading goalscorer with 46 strikes.Villa did not score when the two countries met in Salamanca in October, but Spain won 3-1 without undue discomfort on that occasion and are favoured to do the same again on Tuesday.

Euro 2012 qualifying Group I: Spain 2 Czech Republic 1

Spain stole a dramatic 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier courtesy of record-breaking David Villa.

Villa scored a late brace to increase his tally to 46 international goals, making him Spain’s all-time top goal-scorer ahead of Raul (44).His milestone was undoubtedly lost on the Czech Republic, who looked set for an upset of epic proportions at Granada’s Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes following Jaroslav Plasil’s early goal. But Villa’s goals, the second of which came from a heartbreaking penalty call against the visitors, ensured Spain would stretch their winning streak in Euro 2012 qualifying to four games. The reigning world and European champions sit on top of Group I with 12 points, six clear of second-place Czech Republic.Plasil’s opener on 29 minutes came against the run of play, the Bordeaux midfielder taking a pass from Arsenal man Tomas Rosicky well outside the area and blasting a low shot past Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas. As the hour ticked over and Spain failed to nab an equaliser, the visitors had to think they were a chance of stealing at least a point from their all-conquering opponents. But it all fell apart in a three-minute period as Villa stole the match off his own boot, beginning with a bit of individual brilliance in the 69th minute. The Barcelona superstar collected Andres Iniesta’s pass at the edge of the area, cut inside his marker and split two defenders and Czech custodian Petr Cech with a stinging low strike inside the right post.Three minutes later, Czech defender Jan Rezek cut down Iniesta in the area with a needless challenge, and Villa slammed the spot kick wide of Cech for a 2-1 lead.Spain overran the visitors in the latter stages and could have had another through substitute Fernando Torres, whose attempt was well saved by his Chelsea team-mate at the line.

Euro 2012 qualifying preview: Spain v Czech Republic

Spain will be eager to preserve their perfect record in the Euro 2012 qualifiers when they meet the Czech Republic in Granada on Friday.

The defending world and European champions sit atop Group I with three wins from as many games, while their opponents lie in second place, having recorded two victories and a loss.Spain will be without Carles Puyol, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro Rodriguez for the Friday’s qualifier, with Andoni Iraola, Javi Mart?nez (both of Athletic Bilbao) and Valencia’s Juan Mata being drafted into the squad in their place.Puyol’s absence is likely to see Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos move into the centre of defence to partner Gerard Pique.Spain playmaker Xavi will make his 100th appearance for the national team against the Czechs, while David Villa, who has scored two goals so far in qualifying, will equal Raul’s record tally of 44 goals for the country should he score on Friday.Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque has labelled his Friday opponents “one of the best teams in Europe in recent years”.”They are our biggest threat. They have great physical and technical qualities,” Del Bosque said. The Czech Republic welcome back Galatasaray forward Milan Baros from injury; the former Liverpool ace is expected to provide a much-needed scoring outlet. The 1996 European Championship runners-up have registered only three goals in qualifying so far and will be eager to have Baros back in the fold. The fixture will pit Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech against his new club team-mate Fernando Torres, and Cech was keen to point out he has never finished on the winning side when facing the former Liverpool favourite.”He (has) beat me in every game we played in as opponents,” Cech said. “I hope it will be different on Friday.”Czech coach Michal Bilek stressed the importance of neutralising the Spanish passing game by keeping a compact shape when the World Cup champions are in possession.”They are beatable from time to time, it is possible to achieve a reasonable result against them,” Bilek said. “We need to tighten up the space in our own half and make it impossible for their key players to pass the ball. We will aim for quick counter-attacks after winning possession.”

Spain on horizon for Lithuania

Lithuania can warm up for their Euro 2012 qualifying clash with Spain next week, when they host Poland on Friday.

Manager Raimondas Zutautas has led his side to fourth in Group I with four points from three games, but can experiment with his line-up before their match against the reigning European champions on Tuesday, with both matches at Steponas Darius ir Stasys Girenas stadionas.

The Lithuanian defence will be led by Hearts centre-back Marius Zaliukas, who has represented his nation at senior level since 2005, while 36-year-old Tomas Zvirgzdauskas is in the squad, and would add valuable experience to theback four.

Marius Stankevicius, another Lithuanian defender who plays for Valencia on-loan from Sampdoria, will bring his experience of playing La Liga football to the fore when they meet Spain in Euro qualifying, but the 29-year-old can tune his skills against Poland on Friday.

Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will be missing for his country, after severely injuring a finger playing for Arsenal against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Poland are unbeaten in their last six international friendlies, last losing 2-1 to Australia in September.

Lithuania have lost their past two – a 2-0 loss to Hungary and a 3-1 defeat to Spain – but beat the Czech Republic away 1-0.

Also in action on Friday will be Uruguay, when they travel to Estonia. It will be the first time Oscar Tabarez’s men will have played since losing 2-0 to Chile in a friendly in November, while Estonia are fresh from a 2-2 draw with Bulgaria last month.

Other friendlies on Friday include: Korea Republic v Honduras, China v New Zealand, Kuwait v Jordan, Iraq v Korea DPR, Montenegro v Uzbekistan, Qatar v Tunisia and Panama v Bolivia.
