Bundesliga wrap: Wins for Dortmund, Bayern

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund wrapped up a Champions League berth on Sunday, while Bayern Munich edged closer to one of their own.

Dortmund ensured a top-three finish is the minimum that awaits them at campaign’s end with a 3-0 win over visiting Freiburg, shortly after Bayern rode Mario Gomez’s hat-trick to a 5-1 thumping of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s heavy defeat allowed Dortmund to open up an eight-point lead at the top with four games remaining, while Bayern leapfrog Hannover into third place.

Dortmund imposed themselves on the contest early and took a deserved lead through Mario Gotze in the 23rd minute.

The Germany midfielder gleefully finished past Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann after Marcel Schmelzer played his way to the goal-line and pulled a pass back for his team-mate.

It only got more one-sided as Poland international Robert Lewandowski – who had earlier made a mess of two gilt-edged opportunities – pounced on Omer Toprak’s deflection, rounded Baumann and poked into the open net on 43 minutes.

Chances flew thick and fast in the second half as Freiburg searched for a goal, but it was Dortmund who would succeed once more as Kevin Grosskreutz made the most of a terrific squared ball by Gotze for a 3-0 result 12 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Bayern gave Leverkusen manager Jupp Heynckes a good look at the talent that will be at his disposal next season with a classy 5-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Heynckes is set to take over from caretaker boss Andries Jonker at Bayern next term, but will see out the season in charge of Leverkusen.

And while Bayern’s win came at the expense of his current side, Heynckes will be gladdened that he will soon have the services of Gomez, who extended his goal tally to a league-leading 22 with a hat-trick inside 20 first-half minutes.

The early signs were ominous for Leverkusen when midfielder Simon Rolfes deflected Franck Ribery’s cross into his own net in the seventh minute to gift Bayern a 1-0 lead.

Frontman Gomez took over from there, knocking in Thomas Muller’s cross in the 28th minute and again in the 44th minute.

The Germany international then nabbed his hat-trick goal on a counter-attack in first-half injury time, blasting a low, angled strike that was simply too good for Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler.

With four goals to their credit, Bayern had no need to press in the second half and seemed content to sit back until Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok smashed a cross into the roof of the net in the 62nd minute.

That prompted a brief flurry of activity from the hosts, who earned their fifth and final goal through Ribery after the France international played himself into the area on a one-two with Daniel van Buyten and clinically finished past Adler.

Dortmund appeared set for just their fourth loss of the season when Ruud van Nistelrooy put Hamburg ahead on 39 minutes from the penalty spot, after Mats Hummels had clumsily bundled over Croatian forward Mladen Petric in the area.

Mario Goetze, Dortmund’s 18-year-old prodigy, almost equalised just before half-time when his shot was cleared off the line and he went close to scoring again just after the break, when he headed over the bar.

Dortmund were beginning to impress and when Hamburg’s Aenis Ben-Hatira was sent off for a second yellow card, they finally made the most of when Blaszczykowski got on the end of Patrick Owomoyela’s pass and gave his side a priceless point.

Just five days after their shock 5-2 Champions League victory at Inter Milan on Tuesday, Schalke maintained their winning form with a 1-0 home triumph over Wolfsburg.

Jurado’s 76th minute goal decided the contest, as Wolfsburg’s winless run extended to five, with the defeat leaving the club third-bottom on the table.

Ya Konan’s strike was his 13th for the season and his third in five matches as Mirko Slomka’s side took advantage of Bayern Munich’s slip-up at Nuremberg, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

Bayern looked on track for a fourth consecutive Bundesliga victory when Thomas Mueller converted Arjen Robben’s assist after five minutes.

But Nuremberg have been solid all season, and despite losing their last two, have a place in the top six for a reason, as highlighted by Christian Eigler’s equaliser on the hour-mark.

Goals from Papiss Demba Cisse and Heiko Butscher in the second half saw Freiburg come from behind to defeat Hoffenheim 3-2 at the badenova-Stadion.

Julian Schuster put Freiburg in front after 23 minutes but goals to Vedad Ibisevic and Ryan Babel, his first for the club since joining from Liverpool, put the visitors in front at the break.

But Freiburg responded impressively, with Cisse scoring his 20th league goal of the season from the spot before Ibisevic grabbed the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

Borussia Dortmund Targeted In Planned Bomb Attack

German police say they have detained a 25-year-old man after three suspected explosive devices were found outside Borussia Dortmund’s football stadium.

The Federal Criminal Police Office said he was arrested in Cologne on Tuesday after e-mailing anonymous tips about planned attacks to the authorities.

The interior ministry has sought to reassure the public, saying he had “no links to terrorist or Islamist” groups.

“The suspect was apparently acting on his own with a criminal motivation. There was no danger to any third parties at any time,” a spokesman said.

Michael Stein, a spokesman for the Dortmund police department, said: “We expect no security threat at all for the upcoming Bundesliga match on Saturday. The visitors are invited to come to Dortmund. They will be safe here.”

An investigation was begun by the police in February after an anonymous tip was sent to the German embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, offering to provide information about two attacks being planned.

When the suspect was arrested, he admitted sending the e-mail tips and making up details of the attacks, officials said.

He then told officers about the explosive devices near Borussia Dortmund’s stadium and in his flat. (BBC Sport)

Apparently three explosive devices were found at the apartment of the would be suspect who appears to have thankfully gotten cold feet and effectively instigated his own arrest by emailing tips about his proposed attack.

Dortmund are currently seven points clear at the top of the table with seven games left to play and this weekend they take on Hannover who sit in third spot.

Dortmund could be the victims of their own success

Borussia Dortmund have gone from Bundesliga also ran’s to champions elect in the space of a season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently lead the Bundesliga by seven points.

Their nearest rivals Bayer Leverkusen are also notorious for end of season collapses.

It’s been an incredible campaign for the Ruhr club but Dortmund could become a victim of their own success.

Some of Dortmund’s young players have attracted the interest of bigger and richer clubs due to their success this season.

If reports are to be believed they could lose some of their top stars this summer.

Youngsters

Dortmund have the second youngster squad in the German flight with an average age of just 24.4 years. Dortmund’s young player’s profiles have shot through the roof recently because of this season’s successful campaign.

The club have suffered financial difficulties in recent times but club officials are now confident that the club are on a good financial footing. That means boss Jurgen Klopp is under no pressure to sell his prize assets.

However his players could have different ideas. The likes of central defensive duo Mats Hummel and Neven Subotic have already been linked with big money moves. Hummels is highly-rated and is being linked with a return to his former-club Bayern.

His defensive partner Subotic also has a reputation for being an up and coming young defensive star. The Serbian centre-back has already attracted the attention of Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester City.

Those are just two of Dortmund’s stars to have attracted the attention of Europe’s big guns. Dortmund will do well to hang onto all their top players in the summer.

Staying

One man who looks set to stay at Dortmund is boss Jurgen Klopp. The former-Mainz head coach had been linked with a move to German giants Bayern at the end of the season. However he denied any interest in the position and Bayern have decided to replace boss Louis Van Gaal with experienced ex-Real Madrid boss Jupp Heynckes.

The fact that Klopp is staying with the club will be a big boost for the Dortmund fans. Klopp has reinvigorated the Ruhr club. His motivational effect on his players has brought great joy to Dortmund’s huge fanatical following.

The style of play Klopp likes to play is attractive, easy on the eye football. Dortmund’s style of football is not too dissimilar to that of the German national side at last year’s World Cup.

His success at Dortmund has not only brought him to the attention of Bayern but also Liverpool before the ill-fated appointment of Roy Hodgson last summer. It’s imperative that Dortmund keeps hold of the talented boss.

Champions League

The Dortmund team that Jurgen Klopp has assembled is an excellent unit. Barring any disasters next season the club will return to the Champions League for the first time since 2003. If the Dortmund boss can keep hold of most of his top players and add a few in the summer then the club will no doubt give a good account of themselves in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Experience

Dortmund have had a fantastic season and Klopp and his players deserve their chance to take on Europe’s top teams. Klopp seems to have a good rapport with his players and hopefully they will want to stay at the club and be part of the clubs Europe adventure next season.

Brazilian hotshot Neymar impressed the visiting scouts as he scored both goals for Mano Menezes’ side and he is likely to be a subject of a real bidding war in the summer.

Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici was present, confirming that the Bianconeri were interested in the 19-year-old.

The Old Lady had previously had their scouts watch Neymar at the Under-20 South American Championship in Peru.

Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United also had their representatives at the Emirates, just like few other European clubs.

Bundesliga wrap: Dortmund lose, Bayern romp

Hoffenheim dealt Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund just their third loss of the season, while Bayern Munich thrashed Hamburg on Saturday.

Ninth-placed Hoffenheim had not won in four games heading into their clash with the runaway league leaders at Rhein Neckar Arena, but Vedad Ibisevic’s goal in the 63rd minute was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for the hosts.

Bayern Munich’s hopes of reeling in Dortmund are all but over, but they at least snapped a three-game losing streak in all competitions with their 6-0 triumph over Hamburg at the Allianz Arena.

Dutch international winger Arjen Robben scored a hat-trick, netting Bayern’s first three goals in the 40th, 47th and 55th minutes.

France midfielder Franck Ribery added the fourth in the 64th minute – assisted by Robben – before Germany attacker Thomas Mueller made it 5-0 15 minutes later.

A Heiko Westermann own-goal topped off a rampant victory for Bayern and moved them above Mainz into fourth spot on the table, though Louis van Gaal’s side have played an extra game.

Schalke 04 moved into 10th place with a late 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Veltins Arena.

Spaniard Jurado put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time from the penalty spot, but Georgios Tzavellas equalised in the 70th minute for Frankfurt.

Substitute striker Angelos Charisteas took just 60 seconds to have an impact on the game after coming off the bench for Mario Gavranovic, scoring the winner in the 84th minute.

Kaiserslautern upset seventh-placed Freiburg 2-1 with a 90th-minute winner to Erwin Hoffer at the Fritz Walter Stadion.

Freiburg forward Adam Nemec scored at both ends to leave the match poised at 1-1, before Hoffer’s heroics helped Kaiserslautern out of the relegation zone.

Nuremburg came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at the Volkswagen Arena.

Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic had put the hosts on target for a crucial victory with a 23rd-minute goal, but Nuremburg were level at half-time courtesy of defender Philipp Woolscheid.

Swedish centre back Per Nilsson nabbed the winner for Nuremburg at the death to leave Wolves just one point outside the drop.

Dortmund sweat on Weidenfeller injury

Borussia Dortmund may be without first-choice goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller for Saturday’s trip to defending champions Bayern Munich.

Weidenfeller was forced out of a training session on Tuesday after a collision with defender Mats Hummels and is believed to have suffered a knee injury.

If the 30-year-old fails to recover before the Bayern match, Australian youngster Mitchell Langerak could make his first-team debut in the Bundesliga showdown at the Allianz Arena.

“I could hear a noisy crack around the knee,” Weidenfeller was quoted as saying by newspaper Der Western.

Weidenfeller will undergo an examination by team doctor Markus Braun.

Some sources have suggested Dortmund’s captain has only suffered a minor strain and will be fit to take his place in Saturday’s showdown with the defending champions at the Allianz Arena.

But other reports claim the joint is still swollen, indicating the possibility of a torn or damaged ligament.

If Weidenfeller has suffered any significant damage, 22-year-old Langerak could find himself directly in the firing line as Dortmund – 10 points clear at the top of the table – go in search of their first league title since 2002.

Langerak signed his first professional contract with A-League club Melbourne Victory in 2007 after a year at the Australian Institute of Sport.

He took over from New Zealand international Glen Moss on a regular basis in the 2009/10 season before earning a move to Dortmund.

Victory initially rejected an approach from the German giants, before eventually agreeing a reported fee of close to AUD$1 million.

He is mid-way through the first season of a four-year deal at the Westfalenstadion.

Four second-half goals saw Bayern Munich romp to a 5-1 victory over Kaiserslautern in Saturday’s Bundesliga action.

The performance from Louis Van Gaal’s side was the highlight of the day’s play in the German top flight, with Mario Gomez striking a hat-trick in the triumph.

Both sides entered the game in form, with Bayern unbeaten in six while Kaiserslautern had not lost in five.

Arjen Robben opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time when he made the most of Thomas Mueller’s assist and just a minute after the break, Gomez doubled the hosts’ lead.

Kaiserslautern were entertaining thoughts of a comeback when Jan Moravek pulled one back just after the hour-mark, but Gomez’s second with just 10 minutes remaining wrapped up the result.

The in-form striker snared his treble five minutes later, making it a remarkable 22 goals in his last 17 matches in all competitions for Bayern, before Mueller added the fifth in injury time.

League leaders Borussia Dortmund remain 13 points clear at the top of the standings, despite sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Stuttgart.

Mario Gotze put the table-toppers in front on the stroke of half-time but Dortmund were made to pay by Pavel Pogrebnyak who struck with five minutes remaining.

Hannover failed to take advantage of Dortmund’s slip-up as they were beaten at home by Schalke by a solitary goal.

Despite sitting a whopping 12 points behind Juergen Klopp’s side on the league table, Hannover found themselves in the usual position of second before kick-off.

But their league position counted for nothing as Raul struck the sole goal in the match after 33 minutes after good build-up work from Lukas Schmitz.

In other matches, Simon Kjaer’s 82nd minute goal gave Wolfsburg a 1-0 away win at Mainz while Julian Schieber’s equaliser gave Nurenburg a point in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg.
