Barry named England captain

Manchester City’s Gareth Barry will captain England against Ghana, despite being left out of Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier in Wales.

Midfielder Barry was on the bench as England won 2-0 in the Group G match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.But with John Terry – only just reappointed as captain on a permanent basis – one of six players released from the squad, it falls to Barry to lead the team out in Tuesday’s friendly at Wembley.”He’s a good player, a good captain,” England coach Fabio Capello said.”He’s also the player with the most England caps.”The 30-year-old – capped 45 times at full international level – will skipper a much-changed line-up against World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana. Among others, Liverpool striker Andy Carroll and Everton defensive duo Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines are all expected to come into the team.West Ham midfielder Scott Parker will retain his place if he recovers from a niggling injury.”If Parker is fit he will play,” Capello said.”He’s got some little problem but I hope he will be fit.”

Sorg named as Freiburg´s Dutt replacement

Bundesliga club Freiburg have moved quickly to replace outgoing coach Robin Dutt, elevating reserve-team boss Marcus Sorg to the top job.

Dutt announced on Monday he would be leaving the club at the end of the season to take over as head coach at rival club Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg have wasted no time in replacing him with Sorg.

The 45-year-old will work alongside Freiburg’s under-19 coach and sporting director Christian Streich, with club official Dirk Dufner saying there was no hesitation in promoting the pair.

“He was always our first choice as soon as it became clear that Robin Dutt would be on his way,” Dufner said.

“This is a solution which stands for continuity. Sorg and Streich are absolute experts and they embody the philosophy of the club.”

Freiburg finished 14th last season after being promoted from Bundesliga 2 the previous campaign. They appear likely to improve on that effort this season, with Dutt’s team sitting in eighth.

And Sorg said he hoped to continued the hard work put in by his predecessor.

“You can imagine how pleased I am to my new job,” Sorg said.

“This is an insane confidence in Christian Streich and me. This shows that the benefits of working hard will be rewarded.”

“SC Freiburg has long been the most effective club in German professional football. That we want to continue in the future.”
