League takes precedence, says Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insisted the Premier League remains his top priority after the Gunners thumped Leyton Orient 5-0 in the FA Cup.

Orient secured a lucrative fifth-round replay at the Emirates thanks to a last-gasp equaliser in their opening tie, but a Nicklas Bendtner hat-trick and goals to Maroune Chamakh and Gael Clichy ensured there would be no such fairytale on Wednesday.

Arsenal advance to a thrilling showdown at Manchester United in the quarter-finals, but with leaders United a mere four points away on the Premier League table Wenger said the Gunners were focused on the top-flight silverware this season.

“The league is a vital race. For us, the most important one,” Wenger said.

“It will be interesting until the end of the season. Every game now is a cup game – we had one tonight, and will have one on Saturday (against Sunderland).”

“The race is tight, exciting. I don’t rule out Chelsea or Manchester City because everybody can drop points everywhere. If we maintain our consistency we have a very good chance.”

Arsenal let slip the Carling Cup trophy with a 2-1 loss to Birmingham City in Sunday’s final at Wembley, and Wenger was pleased to see his charges return to their winning ways so convincingly.

“It was a good response, we took the game in a serious way. It was good to win the game,” he said.

“We are in a fantastic run. On Sunday we lost a game in special circumstances.”

Orient boss Russell Slade praised Arsenal for ruthlessly responding to their 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

“It was a difficult night for us. Chances were few and far between,” Slade said.

“Arsenal were in the mood tonight and made life difficult for us. They played some wonderful football and we tried to live with that.”

“They are a group of internationals who are very focused and disciplined and their attitude tonight was spot-on.”

Classic Football Assaults #11: Kung-Fu Master Eric Cantona Takes Offence Then Takes Aim (Video)

7 comments by Mad Dog and Glory on February 21st, 2011

Eric Cantona is of course a footballing legend in the very truest sense of the word. He is also, it seems, pretty good with kung-fu or whatever martial art he used on this sad pathetic loser of a ‘supporter’. This little move did of course led the Frenchman to an eight month ban.

Favre takes reins at ´Gladbach

Swiss coach Lucien Favre has been appointed the new manager of Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The 53-year-old will be unveiled by the club on Monday after signing on as a replacement for Michael Frontzeck, who was sacked on Sunday following ‘Gladbach’s terrible start to the season.

The club sit last on the Bundesliga table with just four wins from 22 matches and are seven points adrift of clearing the relegation zone.

A 3-1 loss away to fellow strugglers St Pauli was the last straw for the club’s board, who dismissed Frontzeck and have now replaced him with Favre, who won two Swiss League titles with FC Zurich.

Favre also had previous coaching experience in the Bundesliga after guiding Hertha Berlin to fourth place in 2009.

His first game in charge will be Moenchengladbach’s home encounter against Schalke on Sunday.

Mourinho takes heart from Espanyol win

Jose Mourinho believes Barcelona are still favourites to win La Liga despite Real Madrid closing the gap to five points on Sunday.

Barca dropped two points with a 1-1 draw away to Sporting Gijon on Saturday, handing Real an opportunity to reduce the deficit in their match at Espanyol.

They lost goalkeeper Iker Casillas to a red card within the first two minutes, but a Marcelo goal and a clean sheet from substitute keeper Antonio Adan on his La Liga debut secured all three points.

“This is an important victory, earned against a strong opponent that has a very good home record,” Mourinho said.

“We even lost our goalkeeper and made another make his debut in La Liga. This also forced us to take off an important player like (Angel) Di Maria, who can always hurt opponents with his speed, and to have only two real substitutions.”

“Too many things were against us and I guess the whole country thought we wouldn’t win, but we did and even deserved to do so with more goals.”

But Mourinho insists reigning champions Barca remain the clear favourites to win their third successive league championship.

“I will not change my discourse now that we are two points closer,” he said.

“Barcelona have a five-point lead and I would like to be in that situation.”

“If I were Barcelona, I would feel comfortable with such a lead. If mathematics say it is possible for us to win we’ll have to believe in that.”

“When I was leading the table in other championships, I used to be asked if I felt any pressure, and I didn’t because I depended on myself. Pressure comes from lagging behind because you cannot afford to make mistakes.”

Hodgson takes over at Baggies

Roy Hodgson will replace Roberto Di Matteo as West Bromwich Albion manager just one month after he was sacked by Liverpool.

Hodgson, 63, takes over with West Brom 17th in the table, clear of the relegation zone on goal difference only.

Fulham occupied the same position when Hodgson took over at Craven Cottage in 2007 before guiding the club to safety in the last match of the season.

“West Bromwich Albion are delighted to announce they have appointed Roy Hodgson as the club’s new head coach,” the club said in a statement.

“The 63-year-old former Inter Milan, Switzerland, Fulham and Liverpool boss has this morning committed himself to the club until June 2012.”

Hodgson was voted manager of the year by the League Managers’ Association last season after guiding Fulham to the Europa League final.

His achievements earned him a move to Liverpool, but he was dismissed on January 8 in favour of fans’ favourite Kenny Dalglish after the club struggled for form in the first half of the season.

Caretaker Michael Appleton will take charge for West Brom’s home match against relegation rivals West Ham United on Saturday.

Hodgson’s first game as manager will come in another basement battle with local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 20.

He will have a chance for revenge on his former employers when Liverpool visit the Hawthorns on April 2.

AC Milan Star Ronaldinho Shows He Still Has What it Takes (Video)

2 comments by Mad Dog and Glory on September 17th, 2010

There are many who have pretty much given up on AC Milan man Ronaldinho. For some reason he is considered to be a veteran who is past it, but we are talking about a Brazilian who is just 30 and has plenty left in the tank. In this little vignette you will see some nice tasty touches from this week’s match against Auxerre but before anyone believes the former Barcelona man is all style and no substance watch the second video and note how the man from Porto Alegre did also set up both Zlatan Ibrahimovic goals in the Champions League victory.
