McCarthy satisfied with a point

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was content with taking a 1-1 draw against Fulham on Saturday, despite being within minutes of a win.

Steven Fletcher had given Wolves a 22nd-minute lead before substitute Andy Johnson equalised 10 minutes from time.

A win would have moved McCarthy’s side out of the relegation zone, but he said he was satisfied with a point.

“On the balance of play I can’t say that we dominated the game, but having got our noses in front we’ve got to learn to keep that clean sheet, which unfortunately we didn’t,” he told Sky Sports.

“It was a bit nervy, but hard working as ever and fully committed.”

“It is difficult to play free-flowing football when you are bottom of the league and up against a good side, so I’ll take the point because every one is precious and it might be the point that keeps us in this league.”

The manager also praised the performance of captain Karl Henry, who worked hard in the middle of the park.

“He has been terrific and that is Karl. He leads from the front and is never lacking in effort and drive,” McCarthy said.

“He has had a great performance today and I’m delighted with him.”

Fulham manager Mark Hughes said his team showed character in coming from behind to secure a point at the Molineux Stadium.

“We were scratching our heads because we’d made a number of clear chances and were playing well,” Hughes told Sky Sports.

“But we had to show character today and we got back on level terms and could have won it.”

A frustrated Hughes was sent to the stands during the encounter after kicking a water bottle on the sidelines.

He said referee Michael Oliver made a couple of decisions that left he and McCarthy mystified.

“It was for abuse of a water bottle, which is a new one on me, and maybe because I missed my kick three times before I made contact,” Hughes said.

“But it was a little bit petty I felt. I was a little bit upset because I thought Brede Hangeland made a fair challenge and won the ball, and the referee saw fit to book him.”

“It was a little bit frustrating for myself and Mick (McCarthy) today I think. On a couple of occasions the official has made decisions that mystified both of us.”

Hughes said he was still confident his team would finish in the top half of the table.

Ill Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was handed just the tonic in his side’s 5-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday.

Speaking to EPSNsoccernet after goals from Steven Fletcher, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and David Jones sent Championship outfit Rovers spiralling out of the competition, McCarthy revealed he had been battling illness since Wolves’ 1-0 home win over Chelsea on January 5.

His decision to clamber out of his sickbed shortly before Doncaster’s visit to Molineux was a sweet one, as Wolves chalked up their biggest victory since their 6-0 drubbing of Gillingham in 2003.

Mujangi Bia’s 61st-minute strike put the English Premier League side 2-0 up, kick-starting a 29-minute, four-goal bonanza for McCarthy’s side.

“I can remember the last time I was beaten more than 5-0, which was Southampton here (0-6 in March 2007),” McCarthy said.

“I can’t remember too many 5-0 scorelines, but this turned out to be a comfortable night in the end with what was a good professional performance.”

“Once we managed to get the second goal it completely opened up the game, and after that there were more chances.”

McCarthy revealed he had been in bed until 4.45pm, perhaps having been stricken by ‘a bit of man flu’.

“I’m just soft me, I know, but I was here doing my job,” he said.

It was a miserable return to his home town for Wolverhampton-born Doncaster manager Sean O’Driscoll, who could only speculate on what might have been had striker Billy Sharp not been thwarted by Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahneman in a one-on-one chance in the third minute.

“Billy is usually clinical with those, then a minute later we were 1-0 down,” he said.

“After that we just gave bad goals away. Those aside parts of the performance were okay as we kept our shape and discipline. But you cannot give away goals like we did in the Championship, never mind against a Premier League team.”

McCarthy could be set for MLS move

Benni McCarthy’s agent, Rob Moore, has revealed that his client would be interested in a move to Major League Soccer.

The 33-year-old South African international is frustrated by the lack of regular first-team action at West Ham United.

Moore told the Sowetan: “He is frustrated at only being given cameo appearances. We’re looking at several possibilities. Benni wants to play. He’s not a guy who sits on the bench and collects his cheque.

“He has maintained his correct weight since October. There are options in England and elsewhere in Europe, but I don’t think he would rule out an interesting move to an MLS club.

“It would be an opportunity to contribute to the game on another continent. We’ve had one or two discussions, and we’ll see what happens in coming weeks.”

McCarthy reveals Sidwell swoop

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has revealed he almost completed a deal to sign Steve Sidwell this week.

The Aston Villa midfielder had spoken to McCarthy and the two teams had agreed a fee before West Ham offered him the chance to play in his hometown of London.

“I thought he was coming to us,” McCarthy said. “We had a deal on the table.”

“He has a house half an hour from West Ham. He spoke to the lads and wanted to come but West Ham came in and kyboshed it.”

“Maybe they will bring him in and sell Scott Parker. It was the choice of the player.”

McCarthy also denied reports that Scottish striker Steven Fletcher, who only signed in the summer, is set to leave in January.

“All the nonsense about him leaving – there is no chance,” said McCarthy. “I don’t believe he said what was in the paper.”

Wolves play fellow relegation candidates Wigan on Boxing Day and a win could move them out of the bottom three.

Matt Jarvis, Dave Jones, Stephen Hunt and defender Christophe Berra are all ready to return for the clash at Molineux, while defender Jody Craddock is a couple weeks away from returning from a hip injury.
