Ligue 1 wrap: Lost points for Marseille, Lyon

Marseille squandered a chance to go top of Ligue 1 after being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Auxerre on Sunday.

The hosts had taken the lead early in the second half but were pegged back 13 minutes before the end, leaving Lille one point clear at the top with five games remaining.

Midfielder Mathieu Valbuena struck in the 56th minute to give Marseille the lead, but just as it looked as though victory was theirs, South Korean striker Jung Jo-Gook found the back of the net.

The draw moved Auxerre into 14th, just one point clear of 18th-placed Nancy in a congested bottom half.

Lyon missed their chance to maintain the pressure on the top two after suffering a surprise 2-0 loss at Toulouse.

Claude Puel’s side finished the encounter with nine men, but conceding a goal in each half left their third-place under pressure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Toulouse defender Mauro Cetto opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Lyon were not without hope at the break.

That changed when Brazilian Michel Bastos was given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards.

Full-back Aly Cissokho put the ball in his own net on 68 minutes to make the possibility of a positive result almost impossible for the 10-man Lyon.

It proved just that and Cissokho was given a straight red card four minutes from time as his team remain ahead of PSG on goal difference.

Toulouse move into 11th after the win saw them break a five-game winless run.

Caen moved out of the relegation zone with a resounding 4-0 thrashing of Nice.

First-half goals from Romain Hamouma and Yohan Mollo put Caen on the front foot and when Nice’s Argentine defender Renato Civelli was sent off on the stroke of half time, the game was all but over.

It took until the 89th minute to seal the points as Hamouma completed his brace and Youssef El-Arabi also got in on the act in stoppage time.

Caen move into 15th while Nice slip to 16th, but both remain just one point clear of the relegation zone.

In the day’s other game, Montpellier and Brest played out a scoreless draw at the Stade de la Mosson.

Ligue 1 wrap: Marseille narrow gap on leaders Lille

Marseille closed to within a point of Ligue 1 leaders Lille with a 2-1 win at Montpellier on Sunday, while Lyon fell in the capital.

In a dress rehearsal for the Coupe de la Ligue final at the Stade de France on Saturday, OM came from a goal down to edge the hosts on Taye Taiwo’s late penalty.

Both teams had earlier gone down to 10 men in the ill-tempered clash, with Montpellier defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari and OM forward Loic Remy handed red cards for an ugly spat deep in the second half.

Their suspensions mean the pair will automatically miss Saturday’s cup final.

The game broke open following a staid and chanceless first half, with Montpellier seizing control through striker Olivier Giroud in the 64th minute.

The towering forward turned the ball into the net off his left boot after being fed by Joris Marveaux.

But their lead would last all of five minutes before Andre-Pierre Gignac conjured up a wonder goal, having sprung the offside trap on Benoit Cheyrou’s long, defence-splitting bomb.

The drama kicked up a gear in the 78th minute after El Kaoutari gave away a penalty for tugging on Remy’s shirt.

The France international remonstrated with his marker, blows were exchanged and the pair were given their marching orders.

Taiwo kept his cool as he awaited the all-clear to take his spot kick, and four minutes later he sent OM into the lead and secured a vital three points for the defending champions.

Elsewhere, Paris-Saint Germain climbed to fourth on the table with a 1-0 win over title hopefuls Lyon.

PSG defender Zoumana Camara edged the hosts into the lead with a 76th-minute goal, his first of the campaign.

Lyon, who suffered just their second league clean sheet since September, remain third on the table but fall five points behind Marseille and six points off leaders Lille.

Finally, Arles’ relegation to the second division became a mathematical certainty as the bottom-placed side fell 1-0 at home to Valenciennes.

Ligue 1 wrap: Marseille held to draw, Lyon climb

Marseille missed a chance to close the gap on Ligue 1 leaders Lille with a 2-2 draw at home to Toulouse on Sunday.

The defending champions Marseille were presented with an opportunity to close within one point of Lille after the first-placed side suffered a rare defeat on Saturday, 1-0 away to Monaco.

And Marseille were on target to take full advantage after leading through a goal from striker Loic Remy 31 minutes into the match at the Stade Velodrome.

But Norwegian winger Daniel Braaten leveled in first-half injury time for Toulouse and the visitors were in front when defender Mauro Cetto struck just after the hour mark.

The mid-table side appeared on course for an upset away win before striker Andre Pierre Gignac equalised for the hosts with five minutes to go.

Marseille remain second following the draw, three points behind Lille.

In the late kick-off, Lyon defeated Lens 3-0 at home to move third, just two points behind Marseille.

All the goals came in the second half at the Stade Gerland, with a 56th-minute own goal from Henri Bedimo putting Lyon ahead, before Jimmy Briand made it 2-0 five minutes later.

Deschamps laughs off Marseille exit talk

Marseille manager Didier Deschamps has scoffed at suggestions he is planning to leave the French club at the end of the season.

Deschamps steered Marseille to their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years last season – his first in charge – and the club are within touching distance of repeating as champions as the 2010-11 campaign draws to a close.

Marseille are second on the table, four points behind leaders Lille with nine games left in the season, and have nothing but their domestic campaign to focus on after being eliminated from the Champions League by Chelsea.

It would seem all is well at the Stade Velodrome under Deschamps, but unrest in Serie A has prompted whispers the 42-year-old could be making a return to Italy.

His former club Juventus are believed to be ready to part ways with Luigi Delneri and could make Deschamps an attractive offer, while Roma are looking for a permanent replacement for caretaker boss Vincenzo Montella following Claudio Ranieri’s resignation.

But the former France international has laughed off the rumours of his impending exit, saying he is already making plans for Marseille’s 2011-12 campaign.

“I’ve already started planning for next year, because that’s my job,” Deschamps said.

“All this speculation about who will move where makes me laugh. Today, I’m 100 percent at Marseille, and will be tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.”

“There’s really no reason for these rumours. I’ll draw my own conclusions at the end of the season depending on our position.”

English Premier League teams Chelsea and Liverpool are also believed to be in the mix for Deschamps’ services, with Carlo Ancelotti rumoured to be returning to Italy and Kenny Dalglish no certainty to remain at Anfield either.

Lens boosted their survival chances with an unlikely victory over Montpellier, but les Sang et Or remain one of the main candidates for the drop. Marseille continued the great run of results as they beat fierce rivals PSG at home and now need a victory in order to remain in the Ligue 1 title race.

Having largely exceeded expectations last season, Lens were expected to avoid the relegation fight this term as it appeared the club have done a good job in the summer transfer window. Nonetheless, les Sang et Or started the season very slowly and after finding themselves in the relegation zone they started feeling the pressure, which prevented them from showing all they’ve got. Lens continued the poor run of form going into the final stage of the league campaign and despite the shock victory over Montpellier, they are now five points behind safety. Seeing that they now need a victory against probably the best team in the league, this is definitely not the situation they would like to be in. The hosts also face certain selection problems as first choice keeper Vedran Runje is a major doubt after picking up injury on international duty, whereas Pollet, Queudrue, Monrose and Situ are out injured.

Marseille experienced certain problems at the start of the season as they were struggling to cope with the busy schedule but as the season progressed Didier Deschamps’ side kept raising their form, with OM on top of their game during the last few weeks. The two games against Manchester United proved Marseille have really progressed this season as the Red Devils needed to put in a lot of effort to eliminate the French side, while OM continued the rich vein of form in Ligue 1, where they are still fighting with Lille for the league title. The impressive run of 6 wins in last 7 league games saw Marseille climb to the second place in the standings and after playmaker Lucho Gonzalez has regained full fitness, everything suggests they will continue the great run. Souleymane Diawara and Cesar Azpilicueta are out through suspension and injury respectively.

Conclusion

Lens’ victory over Montpellier was clearly a one-off result and everybody can see they don’t have enough quality to match a side like Marseille. OM have been in great form of late and with Lucho Gonzalez back to the side, they are hot favourites to win this game.

Champions League: Man United 2 Marseille 1

Javier Hernandez scored twice to send Manchester United into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Marseille.

The Mexican striker, chosen ahead of top scorer Dimitar Berbatov, rewarded his manager’s faith with a smartly-taken, close-range finish in each half before Marseille replied through a Wes Brown own goal late on.

That was enough to clinch a 2-1 aggregate victory for United who had drawn the first leg 0-0 in France.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had promised his team would go all out for victory in this tie and he was true to his word as the home side took the lead after only five minutes.

Wayne Rooney volleyed a wonderful pass out to the wing, received the return ball from Ryan Giggs and crossed low for Hernandez to score from close range.

It was a classic United goal and they had plenty more chances in an entertaining first half, including a penalty claim when Hernandez appeared to be sent tumbling following a break-away move.

But Marseille were by no means bystanders and created a string of opportunities themselves.

Andre-Pierre Gignac wasted one wonderful chance when clean through, while Souleymane Diawara should have scored when he headed narrowly wide from a well-worked short-corner.

United had winger Nani back in action ahead of schedule after recovering from a cut in his shin but were without Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in defence because of calf injuries.

Their defensive worries worsened, too, when substitute Rafael Da Silva was carried off in the second half and John O’Shea departed after only 37 minutes with a hamstring injury.

But fortunately United could still rely on goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who saved smartly from Cheyrou after 75 minutes to deny the French side an equaliser.

It proved crucial because seconds later United clinched the tie, Hernandez grabbing his second of the night after substitute Antonio Valencia set up Giggs to cross low into the box.

Hernandez’s calmly side-footed finish was typical of the striker who has now scored 16 goals this season.

One Hernandez goal vs Marseille came in the opening five minutes, while the second Chicharito goal vs OM came in the 75th minute. Man United won the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Bad news before the Marseille game

Word is, Vidic isn’t fit to play and we’re going to see a central defensive pairing of Smalling and Brown. If it is indeed them and they play like they did against Liverpool (especially Brown), we will surely be competing for one less trophy come this time tomorrow.

In fairness to the duo, they were hardly protected by the midfield in front of them (Carrick & Scholes) and as a result, were dragged out of position with relative ease. Knowing all of this, don’t be surprised if Sir Alex opts to clog our midfield with players like O Shea in an attempt to provide more protection for the backline.

It worked against Arsenal. Could it possibly work yet again?

Marseille’s title chase took another twist as the visiting French champions triumphed 2-0 at Stade Rennes in Friday’s lone Ligue 1 fixture.

Star striker Loic Remy and Argentinean midfielder Lucho Gonzalez got on the scoresheet in either half for Marseille, who remain third but close the gap between themselves and second-placed Rennes to a single point.

League leaders Lille are even on points with Renne, but will have the opportunity to open up a three-point buffer when they host Valenciennes on Sunday.

Marseille, beaten 2-1 at home by Lille last weekend, resumed their push for back-to-back league titles when Remy brought his tally to nine goals for the season in the 24th minute.

Andre Ayew picked out the French international with his cross and Remy powered a diving header beyond Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez.

Lucho had an easy finish following the good work of substitute Jordan Ayew – younger brother of Andre – in the 80th minute.

The Ghanaian striker beat his mark to a looped through ball deep in the area and pulled back his cross for Lucho to poke past Douchez.
