Wolves swept past Doncaster Rovers into the 4th round of the FA Cup where they will meet Stoke at Molineux on Sunday 30th January at 13:00. It was a satisfying and confidence boosting win for Wolves who fielded a mixture of first team regulars, returners from injury and squad players. The starting line up was;
Hahnemann
Mouyokolo. Craddock. Stearman, Zubat
Mujangi Bia, Hnery, Jones, Hunt
Fletcher, Doyle
Doncaster could well have had a two goal lead in the first three minutes as mistakes by Craddock and Mujangi Bia let their opponents in but Hahnemann rescued the first mishap by blocking the shot and then Donny were just wide. But after 5 minutes Wolves were ahead. Doyle and Hunt combined on the left and from Hunt’s cross, Fletcher headed in to the corner.
The rest of the half was far from exhiliirating but Mujangi Bia was looking to get on the score sheet and he shot narrowly wide twice before missing a good chance by firing over when set up by Fletcher. If the game lost momentum towards the end of the first half it was quite dire for 15 minutes after the break. But the entertainment was liffted as Wolves got the crucial second goal after an hour. Zubar played in Doyle on the left of the area and his low cross was converted by Mujangi Bia, That goal seemed to kill off Doncaster and a solo effort by Doyle ended the contest. Hunt played in Doyle on the left of the penalty area and he turned the defender inside out before scoring at the near post from a narrow angle.
Matt Jarvis replaced Hunt and he was to put the icing on the cake by scoring one and making one. Stearman split the defence with a through ball and Jarvis slotted past the keeper. Then Jarvis took a corner from the left that was aimed low and true for David Jones on the edge of the area and he drilled the ball into the net through a crowded area.
So a comprehensive win for Wolves in front of a disappointing crowd of just over 10,000. At Man City on Saturday Wolves ended the game with Mouyokolo right back and Zubar left and that was continued in this game and looks a potential defensive line up for future games. Henry and Craddock both played 90 minutes in effective comebacks. And Hunt, Fletcher and Doyle all looked in good form.
Next for Wolves is a Premier League game at Molineux against Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday at 12:45. The reds have not yet won after the return to management of Kenny Dalglish and Wolves are playing well enough to keep him waiting a little longer for his first win.
