International friendlies wrap: USA hold Argentina at bay
The USA dug in to claim a draw with a star-studded Argentina, while Chile and Portugal could not be split in Saturday’s friendly action.
Facing an Argentina line-up featuring the likes of Lionel Messi, Esteban Cambiasso and Angel di Maria, the USA showed why they made the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup by coming from behind to force a draw at the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey.Messi threatened throughout and went close on several occasions, with it coming as little surprise when he was heavily involved in the match’s opening goal on 42 minutes.The Barcelona starlet nutmegged USA captain Carlos Bocanegra after a mazy run into the penalty area, with Cambiasso scoring high into the net after di Maria’s close-range shot was saved by Tim Howard.But the game was to finish 1-1 after teenager Juan Agudelo – a half-time substitute for Blackburn midfielder Jermaine Jones – seized on a fumble from Argentina goalkeeper Mariano Andujar in the 59th minute to poke home.It was New York Red Bull striker Agudelo’s second goal in just three senior games, with the 18-year-old also netting in his club’s MLS opener last Saturday.Elsewhere, Portugal and Chile played out a 1-1 draw in Leiria, with the home side taking the lead in the 16th minute when winger Varela headed home Nani’s corner.But Chile squared the encounter on 41 minutes when Matias Fernandez – who plays his club football in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon – finished past Rui Patricio.Continuing the Portuguese football trend, Porto duo Fredy Guarin and Falcao both scored in Colombia’s 2-0 against Ecuador in Madrid.Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez hit a first-half double and Andres Guardado added another as Mexico defeated Paraguay 3-1.Sunderland midfielder Cristian Riveros struck Paraguay’s late consolation goal, with the game played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in California.

Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso claims his side is not too concerned by their 1-1 draw with the USA on Saturday in an international friendly.
The Inter Milan star scored his side’s only goal of the game in New Jersey three minutes before half-time, but the USA hit back well and equalised through Juan Agudelo 14 minutes into the second half.Cambiasso downplayed the significance of the result and claimed the side was on the right track under coach Sergio Batista.”The result is not going to change any part of what we are seeking to do on the pitch. We are convinced of what we want to achieve,” the 30-year-old said.”We deserved to win, and a draw will not take us off our current path.”"A goal would have allowed us to keep calm and keep playing the game we had shown in the first half.”"But the draw doesn’t matter. We are in a building process and we will follow the same game-plan. “The United States were a respectable rival, but I think we showed some good stuff and deserved to win.”USA coach Bob Bradley praised the fighting spirit of his side, and reserved special mention for 18-year-old New York Red Bulls forward Agudelo, praising his link-up play with fellow marksman Jozy Altidore.”For a young player, whenever you put him on the field he has confidence,” Bradley said.”He’s had a knack for turning up in some good spots to get goals, so we’re pleased with the things that we see.”"The second half, we find a better rhythm and having Juan closer to Jozy certainly helped.”

USA ready for Argentina meeting
The United States will lock horns with Argentina in New Jersey on Saturday in the first of two friendlies ahead of their Gold Cup campaign.
The USA will be looking to extend their four-game unbeaten record that has seen them twice draw with South American opposition in Chile and Colombia.
US coach Bob Bradley has named three uncapped players for the friendly, summoning Nuremberg attacker Timothy Chandler, Duisburg keeper David Yelldell and Norwich City defender Zak Whitbread.
The game also offers Bradley the first chance to have his favoured starting squad together for the first time since a 2-2 draw with Poland.
However, the US midfield – the side’s weakest component – has been dealt a blow with Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden ruled out for six months following a collision with Manchester United defender Jonny Evans on Saturday.
Bradley’s men crashed out of last year’s FIFA World Cup in the second round after a 3-0 defeat to eventual semi-finalists Ghana, but will be hoping to secure their fifth Gold Cup crown come June.
Argentina also have a regional competition to contend with, the Copa America which kicks off in July on their home turf.
Coach Sergio Batista’s side will be buoyed by their recent international friendlies, which has seen them account for Portugal, Venezuela and great rivals Brazil.
Barcelona superstar and world player of the year Lionel Messi has recovered in time for the clash after suffering a knee injury in La Liga.
Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez has been left out of the squad with reports suggesting the prolific scorer, who has netted 18 goals this term, was being punished for his late withdrawal from the friendly against Brazil, which saw him subsequently feature for his club only three days later.
Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero is also out of the Argentina squad while Benfica striker Eduardo Salvio comes in in the absence of Inter’s prolific marksman Diego Milito.
Elsewhere, Mexico hosts Paraguay at the Estadio Azteca, with both sides looking to record a positive result ahead of the Copa America, while Chile tackles Portugal at the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria.Earlier in the day, Colombia will face Ecuador at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez.

Argentina game called off after fan dies
A football match in Argentina was abandoned on Sunday after a fan died during violent clashes between supporters.
San Lorenzo fan Ramon Aramayo died amid violent exchanges between fans before their Primera League game at Velez Sarsfield.
It is not clear how the 40-year-old died, with varying reports in the Argentine media.
Police on horseback were forced to intervene as the visiting supporters made their way to the ground.
“Independent of the whole organization, unfortunately, there are people who don’t want to live in an orderly fashion, who don’t want to respect authority and these situations happen,” Federal Police spokesperson Nestor Rodriguez said.
“If people had a bit better behaviour, tolerance and came with enough time to arrive at the stadium or whatever other event – perhaps there would be fewer situations of conflict.”
The game did eventually get under way, but referee Sergio Pezzota led both teams away as San Lorenzo fans threatened to break on to the pitch. Velez goalkeeper Pablo Migliore was also hit by a missile.

Argentina leave out Tevez for friendlies
Argentina boss Sergio Batista has called up seven Serie A players for this month’s friendlies against the US and Costa Rica.
Manchester City star Carlos Tevez and Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero were surprise omissions from Batista’s squad, but Inter Milan duo Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso have been rewarded for their good form with selection.
Other Italian-based players included are Napoli pair Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jose Sosa, plus Catania’s Mariano Andujar, Roma defender Nicolas Burdisso and Palermo’s Javier Pastore.
Independiente goalkeeper Adrian Gabbarini comes into the squad, as does Sevilla central defender Federico Fazio, who replaces Spartak Moscow stopper Nicolas Pareja.
Argentina travel to New Jersey to play the US on March 26 and then on to San Jose to take on Costa Rica on March 29.

Friendly preview: Argentina v Portugal
It is hard to go past the battle between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when Argentina meets Portugal in Switzerland on Wednesday.
The clash of two of the world’s best players – and the friendly between their two national sides – was originally to be played in London at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, but was moved to the Stade de Geneve in Geneva after reported scheduling problems.
World Cup quarter-finalists Argentina have elected not to call on several stars, including strike duo Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain and defenders Gabriel Heinze and Martin Demichelis.
But manager Sergio Baptista still has plenty of big names at his disposal, including Messi, Inter Milan striker Diego Milito, Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano and Real Madrid pair Angel di Maria and Fernando Gago.
Veteran Javier Zanetti – a former Argentina captain – is in line to make his 139th appearance for his country.
Portugal, meanwhile, have selected a full-strength squad to take on their Latino cousins, with a recall for Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma perhaps signalling an intent to attack from manager Paulo Bento.
The skilful former Porto man – who can infuriate and delight in equal measure – will face stiff competition for a place in his country’s midfield, with Bento also naming Manchester United’s Nani, in-form Liverpool goalscorer Raul Meireles and Zenit St Petersburg schemer Danny in his squad.
But the main interest in the game will centre around the battle between Messi and Ronaldo – even if Bento was keen on playing the marquee match-up down.
Both players have been in superlative form for their La Liga clubs this season, with Messi having struck 37 times for Barcelona in all competitions and Ronaldo scoring 32 for Real Madrid.
“For me, it is not just about Ronaldo against Messi, but above all about Portugal against Argentina – individual duels are for the fans (to enjoy),” Bento at the unveiling of his squad.
“We have to bring out the best in Ronaldo within a team dynamic, and ensure they cannot do that with Messi.”
“We want to win and play well. It is an important game to prepare the key qualifier against Norway in June.”
Portugal sit second in Group H of Euro 2012 qualifying, but have further friendlies – against Chile and Finland in March – before they resume their campaign against Norway.
Argentina take on the United States in March, but perhaps already have one eye on their hosting of 2011 Copa America in June and July.

Camoranesi returns to Argentina
Former Juventus star Mauro German Camoranesi has joined Lanus on a free transfer after being released by Stuttgart, the Argentine club announced on their official website.
Lanus officials have reached an agreement with the former Italy international yesterday afternoon and he will be officially unveiled at a press conference later today.
The 34-year-old has only joined Stuttgart last summer from Juventus but he agreed to mutual termination few days ago as he was unable to stake a claim for a regular place.
The midfielder will reportedly sign a two-year deal with Lanus before he joins Gabriel Francisco Schurrer’s side in their preparations for new Clausura campaign.

Lionel Messi’s late goal, his first ever for Argentina against Brazil, gave Sergio Batista’s side a win over their bitter local rivals in an international friendly in Doha, Qatar on November 17, 2010.
It was an excellent individual strike from the little Argentine, who scored in second half stoppage time.

Japan 1-0 Argentina video highlights

The Japan vs Argentina international friendly on October 8, 2010 ended in a stunning 1-0 win for the Japanese. Shinji Okazaki’s goal, scored midway through the first half, gave new Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni his first win as Blue Samurai boss.
Argentina were at full strength for the friendly and their squad included stars like Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and co.
The two sides were meeting after a gap of six years. Japan had previously never won an international friendly against Argentina.
