Norwich ride high into the Premiership

Paul Lambert takes the Canaries from League 1 to the Championships and onto the biggest prize, the Premiership in successive years. Yet another Glaswegian manager finding success. The side were in the bottom of League 1 when Lambert joined in 2009 and had just endured another humiliation: A 7-1 loss to Colchester.

Yesterday they returned to the Premiership after six years beating Pompey through a Simeon Jackson goal. The Canadian striker elevated to the pantheon of heroes with his header of a David Fox cross setting of waves of jubilation amongst the traveling fans at Fratton Park. Jackson's season was part of a frenetic finish that saw the Canaries drop just one match in their last 15 matches.

From all accounts it's a club that likes to play attacking football reflecting the manager's own style as a creative midfielder. Lambert was part of the Borussia Dortmund squad that won the 1997 Champions League and his cross led to the first goal for an eventual 3-1 win over Juventus. His success continued at Celtic winning four SPL titles and captaining the Bhoys to the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

Norwich's Premiership appearance is a huge windfall not only for the club which stands to gain about £90m but the city's hotels, pubs, and shops are looking to drive up business with the arrival of thousands of football fans.

Meanwhile QPR who won promotion sweats out the awaited verdict on alleged third party violations involving the transfer of Argentinian midfielder Alejandro Faurlin in 2009. The club could be docked points which would see them contend with Cardiff and Swansea for the final PL berth.

Championship wrap: QPR, Norwich stake promotion claims

Queens Park Rangers remain five points clear of second-placed Norwich in the Championship after both sides posted wins on Tuesday.

QPR enjoyed a 2-0 triumph over lowly Portsmouth, with Adel Taarabt on target after an hour at Loftus Road to score his 14th goal of the season after Pompey goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown let the Moroccan’s long-range strike slip through his hands.

A Clint Hill header 17 minutes from the end gave the home side all three points and extended Portsmouth’s winless streak to eight games, leaving them just four points clear of the drop zone.

Norwich kept up the pressure on the leaders with a 2-1 home win over Millwall, but needed Henri Lansbury’s last-gasp strike to seal the result. Elliott Ward had earlier cancelled out Theo Robinson’s opener for the visitors.

Swansea moved into third place with a 2-0 win over Bristol City thanks to a Darren Pratley brace, while Nottingham Forest came from behind to inflict a 2-1 defeat on Coventry City and move into fourth.

Marlon King gave Coventry the lead before Lewis McGugan and Robert Earnshaw powered the visitors to their fifth consecutive win.

Cardiff slipped from third to fifth after being held to a 2-2 draw at home by Reading, with on-loan star Craig Bellamy’s last-minute free-kick rescuing a crucial point for the hosts as the battle for play-off spots intensifies.

Sixth-place Leeds also played out a 2-2 draw, at Hull City, and needed strikes from Robert Snodgrass and Davide Somma to come back from a two-goal deficit and salvage a point.

Barnsley moved into 12th with a 2-0 win over Preston North End, and Ipswich enjoyed a 2-1 win over Derby County at Pride Park.

Doncaster Rovers had an own goal from Michael Duff to thank for their 1-0 win over Burnley, and Middlesbrough put further breathing space between themselves and the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe who remain second from bottom.

Leicester City moved into 10th place thanks to an early Andy King goal that handed them a 1-0 win over Sheffield United, while Watford remain in seventh spot after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road.

Championship wrap: Cardiff, Norwich close in

Queens Park Rangers’ lead at the top of the Championship was cut to two points after Cardiff and Norwich both won on Saturday.

With QPR not in action until Sunday against Coventry, Cardiff took advantage with a 4-2 home win over Watford.

Dave Jones’ side lined up with a deadly attacking trio consisting of Manchester City loanee Craig Bellamy, Michael Chopra and Jay Bothroyd.

All three netted goals within the first 31 minutes, Peter Whittingham providing setting two of them up.

But the result was not a foregone conclusion as Wayne Buckley pulled one back for Watford after 33 minutes, while Marvin Sordell added another three minutes into the second half.

Cardiff defender Gabor Gyepes made sure of the result with his goal seven minutes from time giving the Welsh side their third home win a row.

Norwich City joined Cardiff on 47 points after a 2-1 away win at Sheffield United thanks to Andrew Crofts’ double.

Crofts opened the scoring on the hour mark before cancelling out Ched Evans’ 68th minute equaliser with another goal 10 minutes from time.

Swansea City are also on 47 points after being held to a 1-1 draw at Barnsley.

Bobby Hassell’s 14th minute opener looked to have given Barnsley all three points but Scott Sinclair equalised from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining.

Leeds United are in fifth after they twice came from behind in a 2-2 draw at Portsmouth.

Joel Ward gave Portsmouth a first-half lead before Luciano Becchio struck his 50th goal for Leeds just after half-time.

John Utaka restored Pompey’s lead but Davide Somma equalised two minutes later.

Tickets Available For Rod Stewart Norwich Show

Rod Stewart tickets are now available for a one-off UK show, set to take place in 2011. The singer will perform at Carrow Road, Norwich on 8th June 2011.

The announcement of the outdoor gig follows the successful 2010 tour, where Stewart sold out arenas across the UK, including Manchester MEN Arena and London O2 Arena. It is currently unknown as to whether any more outdoor concerts will be confirmed for the summer of 2011, although rumours of a number of stadium shows are emerging.
